Whenever I’ve used gold leaf, I’ve applied a gold leaf size, let it dry until tacky, then apply the gold leaf. Allow it to dry then brush off excess gold leaf. Hope you find a way to make it work.
@kimbevan561422 сағат бұрын
Also the fact that the size was old, it really needs shaking really hard to mix the components, I think that had a lot to do with it, but definitely letting it go tacky,which can take 15 minutes in a warm room.then letting the gold stick before trying to rub it off too.

Faux leather is like vinyl. Naturally resistant to moisture. I'm surprised the guilder's paste didn't adhere. Even with real leather, you have to scruff up the surface to make any kind of paint adhere to the leather long term. But you managed it! Yay!

Regarding the gold leaf: A few pointers.... Firstly paint your PVA glue with an ultrafine brush to make it as clean lined as possible. Next; make sure the glue is thinly and evenly applied. Then; leave until it's only just tacky to the touch with zero wetness in the glue/ almost like a pencil eraser rubberiness. Next you can overlay your gold leaf I noticed that you were using a largish acrylic brush and were using wiping motions to "paint" it and get it to stick. This isn't correct. The gold leaf is exceptionally delicate, tears easily and any vigorous application is unlikely to be successful. You really need a really soft squirrel hair brush which is exclusively for this purpose. Once you have the softest brush you very lighty dab the gold leaf without dragging the brush at all. Then leave for at least 24 hours to dry thoroughly in a dry warm atmosphere. Next day, use your squirrel brush to very lightly dust the ultra dry surface. Once this is done leave for a further 24 hours and buff surface as required.
@ChateauDeMontmagnerКүн бұрын
Thank you for the advice, I'll have to get some better tools and try again 👍😁
@PupperskiКүн бұрын
@ChateauDeMontmagner I'm happy to help 😊. It's a very delicate skill. The gold leaf when first applied sort of clings like static electricity if you're doing it correctly. Then it's just making sure its totally dry. Good luck! I look forward to seeing you practice! It's a fine art!

Brilliant on the angling the desk’s legs. Did the paint get spilled? My latest idea is possibly do a two day workshop $600 per person. Each person would redo a simple desk chair they find at a brocante. Love the embossed top. On journey to the chateau, they use a type of glue then use a brush to brush in gold leaf. Very creative addition to the room.

You can have a piece of thick glass cut to the size of the top the desk (not thin glass as it will break). The recessed part of the door then can be used to hold photographs or things of interest between the glass and table top.. I have glass tops on all my antique furniture tops and it was not expensive for the glass to be cut to size, about $35. Do not use thin glass and all will be well.
@ChateauDeMontmagner13 сағат бұрын
I really like that idea but I think in this house it would be too modern, but it's definitely something I might do for our own place when we move on 😁👍
@1Noneyabusiness6 сағат бұрын
@@ChateauDeMontmagner Yes, a bit modern, but would make your workdesk less uncomfortable. I have several cats that like to sit on my antique tables and I had to protect the wood from scratches. It was the best solution for my needs. Love your videos and looking forward to the next.

No we won't be having bedside tables, it was designed to have the ledge above the headboard with the built in plug sockets and usb ports so that you don't need them, the shelf is there for you to put drinks or phones you might be charging 👍
@sarahyates60552 сағат бұрын
You need proper gold leaf size glue, then when you’ve painted the size you must leave it for anything up to 24 hours for the size to set but it’s still tacky. Then add the gold leaf and brush it off then burnish it …. Polish it with something smooth depending on the size of the piece you can use a teaspoon up to a serving spoon. If you find a bit hasn’t stuck before you burnish it then just keep adding the gold leaf it will stick. Oh and before you add the size make sure your piece is completely dirt, grease and dust free . And like anything practice makes perfect.
