12:58, if we’re comparing Madagascar to Wreck it Ralph 2 then you’re definitely right. That said, Encanto does a pretty good job having no villains just antagonists. That said, if we compare modern villain-free Disney movies as a whole to Madagascar then Madagascar does a much better job.

It's also interesting because Madagascar, a ridiculous, silly comedy did something better than serious Disney movies. Madagascar is not supposed to be taken seriously, yet it pulled off this so well.

Exactly. That's what makes all of this even more unbelievable. That a farce has better written characters than certain Disney movies.

@@moviemadness2536 True. Madagascar has even less plot than Duck Soup. It's an old comedy that is only an hour and eight minutes. It is not serious at all, it's just hysterical. Madagascar is essentially the Duck Soup of animation.

I didn't even think about that when watching Madagascar. I think your definitely right in this case, (with the exception of Encanto, which did pretty good) on Disney struggling with this. Great video!
@moviemadness25364 ай бұрын
Exactly, because it's well written, you don't even think about the movie's lack of a traditional villain or that the character's sometimes make bad decisions. As for Disney, as I've said in many videos, it would be nice if they just went back to making the classic villains they were known for, because their attempts to do stories without them (or, worse yet, trying to make them sympathetic) haven't really worked out. And thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

Also the logic of the story works marty leaves zoo, friends follow marty, humans react, marty and friends get shipped to kenya, but penguins take over ship, marty and company get dropped off in madigascar, marty and friends ergo have to try to survive in madigascar. Also all characters(primary and secondary) are drivers of the plot in terms of the events of the film rather than just watching from the sidelines (even the one off chimp characters have agency).
@moviemadness25364 ай бұрын
Brilliantly put. Everything in the plot is completely logical, and everything the characters do effects what happens rather than them only doing what the plot requires them to do. Honestly, some don't give the writing in this film enough credit.
@williehampton38554 ай бұрын
Never really thought about it but wow. You hit the nail on the head when you were talking about how one movie succeeded where the other failed in terms of not having a central villain. Alex and Marty both had selfish goals but they had understandable motives as to why. I mean, if I was Marty and if I was bored by my constant everyday routine in my seemingly cozy life without experiencing a taste of what the outside world had to offer, I'd take a train trip around the world and back too.
@moviemadness25364 ай бұрын
Exactly. The characters make poor choices and don't exactly act the best at times, but what helps keep them sympathetic is that they're all completely understandable on their part. It's done so well that most aren't even likely to notice it. And thank you for the compliment, I'm really happy you enjoyed the video.

@@moviemadness2536 Anytime. And you want to know what the sad part is? I actually thought Ralph Breaks the Internet was a good movie. I thought it was fine on my first watch but after hearing the negative reviews it got and giving it a second rewatch, all of their assumptions were correct. It's one of Disney's worst attempts at a sequel to date. Deep down, I knew there was nothing worth coming back to because all it was just outdated internet references, cringe humor, shameless IP cross promotion and worst of all, character assassination in a painfully embarrassing manner.

@@williehampton3855 Couldn't have said it better myself. Especially because I've noticed Ralph Breaks the Internet has that effect on people. They think it's good at first and only come to realize how poorly written it is later on. It's little wonder the movie has such a polarized reputation.

@@moviemadness2536 Indeed. Disney tried to make it look like a superior version of The Emoji Movie. And while it does have better use of world building for the Internet, it doesn't make it any less dated or cringe than that film. I give Dreamworks credit for committing to the craziest concepts for their movies (regardless of said films' quality). I never really thought of it this way until I saw how Disney's become so deathly allergic to actual villains (and romance, but that's another story)

10:23, kind of like how in later seasons of The Fairly OddParents, Timmy Turner was almost always presented as a selfish character almost regardless of what he did while the tenth season’s deuteragonist Chloe was seldom presented that way even when she behaved in a remarkably similar fashion
@moviemadness25364 ай бұрын
Yeah, that's called just plain old bad writing. If there's one thing I've always emphasized on this channel, it's that if a writer intends a character to be sympathetic or unsympathetic, then they MUST ACTUALLY BE PRESENTED THAT WAY. Otherwise, it leads to exactly the problems you just described.
@matityaloran91574 ай бұрын
@@moviemadness2536 The thing is, with The Fairly OddParents, the show has had a formula for the first nine seasons of Timmy making a selfish decision only for it to backfire and force him to learn a lesson (which worked quite well) and because of that it made sense that the show often considered him selfish. The problem with the tenth season is that they tried to have their cake and eat it too since they wanted to contrast the new character Chloe with Timmy by having her be responsible and selfless but they also wanted to have her go through the protagonist style arcs that Timmy went through and the result was a mess. (There were some good episodes even then but there were also a lot of problems that the show hadn’t had before.)

Well, there is a factor that screws up Disney's attempts... It's not that they don't get the importance of what this video is saying, but rather that they _actually think they've tried this advice._ In other words, the system of values that Disney _as a corporation_ seem to hold these days are a complete mismatch to those that we their _audience_ do. This has lately worsened to the point that even the movies that _do_ have villains fail, because what they think is "good" simply isn't, leading to "heroes" that have absolutely horrible ideas and "villains" whose greatest crime is pointing out said awfulness.

Technically yes, but as I explained in the video, the fossa aren't all that threatening when you get right down to it, have no individual personalities, and don't cause the central conflict. They exist just so King Julien will have a reason to want to recruit Alex, as well as allow the movie to have a climax. In essence, the movie does have to function without a real "villain".
