Um, hello- they already covered that? SHE’S BRITISH. They don’t hug or... give a shit about each other, basically. She told her horse and then hugged it from a safe distance away from her children... and then she was done with it? That’s why she didn’t step in. Because technically the horse or dog thing counts, so she basically already did everything within her power as a deeply repressed and emotionally confused British person (and terrible family member/lover of dogs and horses), probably, long, long ago.

@@reilly4678 Oh, I was just being sarcastic. I mean she did say “we only show affection to animals”, or horses and dogs or whatever, so I was just using that as an opportunity to be acerbic. Y’know, for a larf. I don’t actually think that about British people. It’s a cute movie nonetheless and I have warm memories of hanging out with my best friend in high school and taking her little babysitting job charges to go see it at the cheap seats to escape the heat during the summertime. Happy times.

There was a lot of movies that had a “I need to find my father because my life is not complete without one” movies when I was a kid and man did it make me feel shitty for just being raised by a single mom. Like, did the writers ever think about how these ideas would affect the kids that watch them? Is it truly common to have a wealthy and loving dad, just a phone call away after years of absence? Mrs Doubtfire was a comedy and family classic that still took into account that kids would absorb the message and brought home the message that not all families are the same and that’s okay, as well as assuring kids of divorce that it’s gonna be okay. That’s how you make a positive impact on children, instead of nonsense like this.
@user-himenes

You made me remember that uncomfortable experience of watching parent trap with my recently divorced mom, who sometimes would ask me shit like "do you think your dad still loves me?" and I would answer "yes" out of pure pressure, knowing full well that I'm lying. That was bad movie choice lmao

“The season” referred to is not about weather. Its the debutante season, where all the girls who have “come of age” that year “come out” to society and are presented to the queen (not sure if that bit still happens with everyone). Its an endless round of balls and parties as each girl has her own coming out party before they “debut” formally into society.

The "seaside shopping centre" looks to be Southbank, which is the most touristy place in all of London (other than maybe Buckingham Palace). The only thing a local would take you there for is to steal your phone and leave you in the Thames.

The fighting over daddy thing is pretty messed up. Sadly I had to go through it with my step sister. My dad remarried and lived with my step sister and step mom but we (my brother and I) got to visit him on holidays. I didn't necessarily "fight" for my dad's affection but my step sister legit got jealous and tried everything she could to get attention on her when we visited. I never said anything about it but At some point my dad had to talk to her because he could see it was getting out of control. She loved my brother but she hated me, but she also had her own daddy/abandonment issues so. Even though i don't really like her, I just hope she's ok now.

Fun fact there’s actually an interesting story to “the stereotype that in the UK back entrances are more open than front entrances.” In 1982 a man named Michael Fagan noticed how lacking security was for the British palace. So to prove a point he broke into the palace twice. The first time during broad daylight where he walked around the palace for awhile, drank half a bottle of open wine he found and then left. The second time he snuck in at night and actually went into the queen’s bedroom. She woke up and he explained to her that she needed to improve the castles security. Then he was taken into custody. Interestingly enough laws at the time meant that he couldn’t be charged with trespassing, and the only thing they could charge him with was “stealing” that open bottle of wine from the first break-in 😂 anyway they ended up dropping the charges and DID improve “back entrance security” after that... I’m sure I got a couple details wrong, but that’s the gist. So I totally understand why that stereotype/idea of poor British security could become a running joke for years to come.
