As a westerner raised by a classicly trained singer, your singing is absolutely wonderful, no creep detected. I absolutely love the throaty pitch and rythmic cadence. I can see you becoming a master of your craft in time and with your dedication! And a deep thanks to your sensei for granting this wonderful and facinating look into the training and production of Noh. I have always delighted in it's performance!
@Zakuru12 Жыл бұрын
Whoever said your traditional singing is creepy was very rude. IMO I always imagined that back in the day, singing was more like mimicking the instruments people had at the time. Instruments being made first and singing second. And I definitely see this with Ji-utai sounding more like traditional Japanese instruments. :3

I am always thrilled to see the Noh videos in the channel. It's very dear to me, since my thesis was about it and back at the time the Japanese Embassy of my country even took my thesis in their library of Educational Department. It was a great honour. And while my thesis subject has been about Noh masks and stage and the comparison to Ancient Greek Tragedy's, the more I watch the Ji-utai part, reminds me of the Greek Orthodox Church chanting soundwise. It's very interesting.

To me, the Ji-utai singing in Noh Teather sounds like Buddhist Chants that Monks Perform in Tempels. The First Image that came in my Mind was that of Tibetan Buddhist Monks singing in Lhasa Tibet in Topala Palace!

Hello Shogo-Sensei, hope all is well, this is just another person who wishes to get into Japanese culture simply because it's interesting to me. So for a while I've been watching your videos and shorts, mostly with how to use a katana and such, but I do watch other topics you go through. You probably don't read through every single comment considering there's millions of people on the Internet, but I was curious if you could someday make a video talking about my favorite Samurai from the Sengoku era, Tsukahara Bokuden. There's not a lot of videos that talk about him, so I'd like to know more from your words. Of course if you can't get to this comment, I can completely understand. I'll still watch your videos and learn more regardless.

Marketing memorandums for services with trade arts are historically a "social wisdom" that legal academics address. The content and context of the marketing advertisements are very important for the customer service and communication. Customary laws in the last 25 years in Japan and with harmonized use of security standards is essential with Japan travel and tourism. KZbin as an affiliate of Google Inc., and Alphabet Inc. securities has a public policy that the Japan National Tax Agency College must recognize to help formulate the law as the "social wisdom" has been applied with political science as ethics within the Constitution of Japan law of obligations as commercial contracts and tax jurisdiction as conflict of laws dictates in the written legal codes.

Noh really reminds me of Khon and Lakon Khol because similarly while performing you also wear masks when portraying specific characters. When dancing you use your whole body in each intricate step. And the singing expresses and tells the story of the performance.

This reminds me of classical ballet in a way. Ballets like 'Swan Lake', Giselle or Nutcracker have very rigid structured dances that have been the same choreography for decades, but the performers and dance companies all have a specific style that comes out.

Thank you for this video. I've been curious about Noh, and your explanation is very clear and concise. Speaking of samurai, though, can you maybe do something about the Houkou/Taikou Noh sometimes, the ones sponsored/performed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi? I've been trying to look for info about them, but only found minimal info online.

14:27 During the second fan involvement that symbolized a katana, it felt like the initial fan was shifting to some kind of shield, which surprised me. Was that the intent, or had it some symbolic meaning, like hiding your feelings? Sadly don't speak too much japanese so I missed a lot of the context, would be nice if you could add subtitles if that's possible
@LetsaskShogo Жыл бұрын
It was to represent a shield! It was singing that even the waves of the ocean was on his side, helping him like a shield!
@LaNoir. Жыл бұрын
@@LetsaskShogo Ooh, thank you for clarifying! I was surprised since I felt like not many shields are used in traditional japanese combat and it's more often the sword or the Saya that's used for blocking. But that means it's more of a symbolic shield, I guess, making it more obvious to the audience than another closed fan

In Noh theatre would a practitioner specialise in a particular role/character, or would they be expected to learn to perform several different roles?
@edienandy11 ай бұрын
In Noh theatre the characters are divided into 2 broad categories, Shite and Waki. Shite is the lead character. Waki is the secondary character. Waki is very often a traveling monk or dignitary of some kind and Shite is often a ghost or spirit that appears to the Waki. Shite characters also include noble ladies and warriors and demons. There are 5 Schools of Noh that train Shite actors: Kanze, Hōshō, Konparu, Kongo, and Kita. There are other schools that train Waki actors. Shogo studies the Kongo School, you can tell by the pattern on his practice fan (the green and white one) it has the Kongo cloud pattern on it. A Shite actor never portrays a Waki character and the same is true vise versa. To my knowledge, Shite actors don’t specialize in certain roles the way Kabuki actors do. For instance, in Kabuki theatre there is a type of actor known as Onnagata who specializes in female roles but I don’t think there is such a thing in Noh theatre. Instead a Shite actor is expected to be able to portray a wide variety of Shite characters.
