Gloria's performance in the late 1970s was seminal and has been featured not only by Selena in 1994 but in several TV shows and movies. The male voices you heard was in the Keanu Reeves movie, "The Replacements." I was actually at this record selling show at the Houston Astrodome for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The audience was rather surprised that she chose to perform that disco medley as she had never made any such performance before. Later during the show, she performed some of her many hits in Tejano music which had made her famous in Texas and across the southwest but also made her a huge celebrity across Latin America as well. Many Years went by before another woman, Shakira, had such an impact. Two weeks later Selena was back in Houston doing a small nightclub show and I was, again, there but instead of being in the audience, I was assigned to her security detail as I was a Houston Deputy Constable. It was cold and drizzly that night and we walked her from her bus around the back of the venue to the other side for her safety. I put my patrol jacket upon her, coming and going, for two shows that night. During one show, while I stood by the stage right, she stopped singing for one moment, looked down to the right and between two speakers and smiled at me. I'll never forget that. I later got an autographed photo with her. She was murdered just two weeks later and I was deeply shocked and hurt.

The songs she sang in order were: “I Will Survive” (Gloria Gaynor); “Funkytown” (Lipps Inc.); “Last Dance” (Donna Summer); “The Hustle” (Van McCoy); and “On the Radio” (Donna Summer). Donna Summer would be great for Female Fridays, she was the Queen of Disco and, along with the Bee Gees, epitomized the disco sound. I’m not really familiar with many of Selena’s song but I believe one of the more mainstream ones was “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom.”

I've never forgotten the review I read in the NME at the time of the Lipps Inc single. A panel of music journalists were reviewing the singles together in a sort of panel that week. The review ended with the exchange: "yes, but what does it say about the state of the world?" "it says it's a funky town".

This was Selena's last live concert before she was killed a woman that she considered a friend and started off as the president of her fan club. Her name is not worth mentioning and she's serving life in prison for taking this talented young lady. She had just crossed over from performing Tex Mex music. Check out Missing You and Dreaming of You 🌹❣️🙏

Gloria Gaynor first topped the charts with song in 1978 during the disco era. It is her signature song. Many people have recorded it since then but Gloria's version is iconic. People have used it as an anthem against domestic abuse and violence and taking control of one's life. It serves as a positive theme for those stepping into the light after surviving a dark period in their lives.

To NOT know Donna Summer is criminal. There are events in everyone's life where you remember exactly where you were when something happened. Selena's murder is one of those times. I was a DJ at a bar in the Houston area when it happened. I was setting up for our weekly karaoke night and we had our large screen tv on. As soon as we heard the news, all of us looked at each other unbelievably. South Texas literally shut down. Grown men cried. Gloria Gaynor sang the original, released in 1978. Funky Town by Lipps Inc. Last Dance by Donna Summer. The Hustle by Van McCoy On the Radio by Donna Summer. Selena married her lead guitarist, Chris Perez. Selena's brother told a story about Selena. After her first big paycheck, she bought a super powered go cart and would give rides to every kid in their neighborhood every week. Her dancing is the Cumbia. It is originally from Africa and brought to the country of Colombia, and adopted by the Native people of Colombia. It is a popular dance to this day in Colombia and Mexico. Como La Flor, Adios, Acuerdate de Mi, Baila Esta Cumbia. All sung by Selena. Her father wrote many of her songs.

Where do you start with Donna, at the beginning with Love to Love You Baby, or the Transformative I Feel Love. The her 9 consecutive top 5 singles, when she became the first female artist to dominate the Billboard Charts - Last Dance, Mac Arthur Park, Heaven Knows, Hot Stuff, Bad Girls, Dim All The Lights, No More Tears (Enough is Enough), On The Radio, The Wanderer. She was the first female and the first black artist to take 3 albums to the top of the charts back to back, the just happened to be 3 Double albums.

Given that "I Will Survive" (Gloria Gaynor) is often known as "The Female National Anthem", it's hilarious that y'all keep thinking it was originally a male voice. Of course you may have a heard a cover with a male voice -- so then it would be expected. But even context there, you'd have been missing that this is a dude singing "the female national anthem", which contemporary audiences would totally understand. I confess, also, that I didn't necessarily see a Disco Medley coming, in spite of the video being called Disco Medley! LOL.
