Going on my 4th year as white belt. Talk about slacker, actual class/training time was roughly 1.5 years if not 1 year lol. I worked a lot, drank a lot and was not really focused on earning belts at the time I started. The pandemic hit, we got shut down and I actually got pretty obsessed with Jiu Jitsu again. I drilled and studied at home, I started running on the treadmill and I actually quit drinking believe it or not lol. I find that I enjoy it more without focusing on belt rank but instead, focusing on improving my skillset and being very very honest in what I need to address and work on. For the longest longest longest time, all I did was jump guard and straight into a submission attempt. If there was none, I'd find a way to twist their body unnaturally into one! rofl I think every white belt goes through that phase, mine just happened to be longer. Now that I know incorrect form, it makes learning correct form that much easier and fun!

Focusing on escapes is one of the smartest things I have ever seen for a Jiu Jitsu curriculum. I know everyone wants to learn how to kick ass and choke people out, but learning how to get out of bad situations is monumental, even life saving. That and the positions, basic guards, how to frame and use grips & leverage is a given. How to control someone is also high on the list, but that and more can be learned at Blue belt.

The most important thing to teach a white belt is the basics. Such as reverse spinning dragon guard or the pterodactyl sweep from bottom half guard into a black widow spider guard.

I'm still a white belt. Are there people who started after me who are now blue belts? Yes. But after 3 years of inconsistent attendance (partially marred by COVID), I'm not freaking out. I have fun and try my best. One of the brown belts gave me the best motivation ever, "your day will come." Going back after another hiatus. Hopefully this time will be a lot more productive and I might get a little further.

The best way to assess your own development is to write down exactly what you know right now this moment in your BJJ skills. What you know, what you need to work on, and what you can work on. They're not expecting black belts from white to blue, they DO expect you to know the fundamentals of BJJ and build off from there into blue.

I'd have to add, learning the different positions and guards, why they're effective and how to use them dominantly is also very important as a white belt. As is learning how to control people, break their posture, breaking balance, proper framing, take/make space & basic pressure principles. Simple movements also; under/over-hook, back takes, arm drags etc.

Ryan could you do a video on injures sustained from doing GJJ/BJJ? I have young kids training in GJJ and am worried that starting so early they are going to end up with arthritic fingers, neck and back injuries as they get into their 20-30’s. That's amazing Professor thank you for addressing what is required in the Kama/Rickson Gracie System. Thank you professor. I have a question, would off mat researches and study being counted as time of BJJ practice? For example, I started BJJ 2 years ago, I have had a mat time for about 350 hours, and In the meantime I spend at least 1500 hours reading books ( I went through many books like: Jiujitsu university by Saulo Ribeiro; X guard by Garcia, Close Guard by BJ Penn, the path to the black belt by Rodrigo Gracie and Kid Peligro, BJJ advanced techniques by Fabio Gurgel; the Essence of BJJ by Rigan, Machado; BJJ by Marc Walder; and more), watching videos, making notes (couple of thick note books systematic concepts and aspects, and key info...). It has been really helping my understanding and practicing BJJ. My major was physical education when I was young and I had extensive training in boxing, kick boxing and wrestling ( in clouding judo), in fact it helps my learning process. But I have no idea if those head knowledge research, study and training experience be calculated BJJ times? I am to be 65 and I know BJJ art has been part of the rest of my life, I am really enjoying my involvement in BJJ. By the way, I am a white belt novice and feel comfortable with it. I have been trying to play X guard, single x, reverse x, DLR, reverse DLR, spider guard, lasso, worm guard, sit up guard (seated guard and supine variations), collar sleeve guard, K guard (squid guard), Z guard, imanary roll, inverted entries, butterfly guard, split guard, clam guard, side guard, rubber guard, close guard, half guard, deep half guard, quarter guard... And major positional offense and defenses; berimbolo inversion...I even tried the truck entries positional O/D, electric chair lock entry, vaporizers; twister, foot locks (event Aoki lock/Caio Terra foot lock from DDS), ankle locks, knee bars, heel hooks, leg lace, calf crank/slicers...I am not good at most of the moves, It is just for fun.

Is there much of a difference to the self defence jiu jitsu that Rener and Ryron teaches and the self defence jiu jitsu that Kama teaches? Or is it all just difference curriculums to teach the same techniques?
@KamaJiuJitsu
@KamaJiuJitsu 3 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Yes in that our Jiu-Jitsu and theirs comes from the same original source. No in that Rickson took his Jiu-Jitsu to a whole “ ‘nother” place by adding in the weight distribution, “connection,” base, and angles concepts, aka “invisible” Jiu-Jitsu. Do Ryron and Rener know their Uncle Rickson’s concepts? Not really sure. Are they truly spectacular examples of their grandfather’s Jiu-Jitsu? Most definitely. Does Gracie University and their black belts teach what we teach at Kama Jiu-Jitsu to their students? The “overlapping parts?” For sure. Ive seen many black belts who don’t know/teach Rickson’s “invisible” concepts...

What's the difference between cross side and side mount?
@nickk1456
@nickk1456 3 жыл бұрын
Cross side is the name we use for the position other schools/gyms/etc call “side control.” Cross side is played differently from what most systems do, however. Side Mount is what other systems will call “technical mount” where the top person has their knee, closest to the opponent’s head, down behind the opponent’s back and the other leg (leg closest to opponent’s legs) is posted up and connected to the opponent’s hip.
@KamaJiuJitsu
@KamaJiuJitsu 3 жыл бұрын
Side Mount = The Knee-Up Mount while bottom person is lying on their side. Cross side and side mount (for us) are completely different “classes” of positions requiring vastly different solutions for escape and submissions.

I will have to say even if you just train sport jiu jitsu/submission grappling, and you have been consistently training, you will be able to defend yourself against 99% of people out there. Don’t agree? Go tell that to even a mediocre competent wrestler that hasn’t trained “self defense” a day in his life, he would absolutely defend and wreck the average joe street attacker out there. Sport Jiu Jitsu teaches you grip breaks, position, awareness, getting out of bad situations,and control. Why do you think dominant top positions and take downs are rewarded with points in tournaments? These are all positions that will be advantageous in a fight. I train a lot of sport jiu jitsu and you can absolutely be aware of whether or not a position will be bad in a fight or open yourself up to striking. Maybe that just comes with time on the mats? I have been on the mats a few years with BJJ and also some wrestling when I was younger so idk. Also, all jiu jitsu is not “Gracie jiu jitsu”. School I trained at for a couple of years was from the Fadda lineage of BJJ. Just some notes. Not knocking you at all, appreciate your content.
@KamaJiuJitsu
@KamaJiuJitsu 3 жыл бұрын
I do not agree with your first statement. Versus a wrestler, sport BJJ players don’t necessarily compare favorably when it comes to proficiency in the street setting. While a sport BJJ player will likely be superior to a wrestler in the submission aspects, a typical wrestler as far better balance on his feet. A BJJ player has spent 98% of his time grappling, while a wrestler has spent 90% of his time closing the distance and taking his opponents down to the ground. If a 4-yr high school wrestler shoots in for a “high crotch” and elevates his opponent, you KNOW a slam is coming. If a sport BJJ player confronts that same wrestler on the street, what happens? I dunno. Most sport BJJ players have no clue how to take a wrestler down and on most occasions, will not be able to stop the takedown. Of course, on mats, the takedown may not mean much, but where the landing spot is concrete, asphalt, or an object, who knows? Call me skeptical.
@timrob0420

@@KamaJiuJitsu I’d agree but grappling is grappling . Idk maybe most of the gyms I’ve personally spent any length of time training at other than open mat also incorporates wrestling into the curriculum? Especially no gi/submission wrestling.
