The most annoying thing about the coverage of this situation is that so many people think it would be impossible for Shohei not to be aware of the situation. No body knows the truth yet, but like you pointed out there are dozens of ways he could have been in the dark and taken advantage of. Even if he approved of money transfers, it doesn't mean he knew it was going to a bookie.

Ohtani is a sports athlete, they leave that to their accountant, agent or a close associate, for Shohei it was Ippei, they knew each other since he was 19 years old (and when he came to the states he knew no one except Ippei and gave him complete trust) And player's making over hundred million dollars with money coming in and out, while he is toally focused on his game and training, no one will notice if that athlete loses a fraction or pocket change to what he is making.

When you're talking this kind of money, there's one account his paychecks and sponsorships and everything like that comes into, and then it's going to get disbursed to other accounts that have different purposes. He might only look at his F around money account semi regularly. But the rest of that money is off doing work to be made into more money, or to a savings account.

I have a former friend who went down for embezzlement, and what often happens in these cases is pretty much what you said. It starts small with intentions to repay and over time they lose track of just how much they took, or they delude themselves that _this_ time it’ll work out and they’ll be able to repay everything.

My theory i subscribe to here is that Ippei asked Shohei to help cover some debts, but he either didnt specify what they were for or he lied. So Shohei covered them to help his friend, but didnt realize he was covering gambling debts. So not a traditional type of theft but still theft in the end

1. Illegal bookies don't advertise their current clients. Most legal ones won't either. What a stupid thing to say. Privacy is hugely important no one is going to place bets with someone that advertises his clients 2. They're criminals. Their ways of recouping debt are not limited to the Fair Debt Collection Act

One thing that argues against Shohei having a gambling habit is the huge deferment of his contract money: if he loved betting, and was in the habit of betting in the tens of thousands or millions, he'd want to have more ready access to his massive money pile, one would think. Deferring such a massive portion of his contract suggests he knows he could live happily for the next decade with much less.

When playing for NPB, Shohei's mother put gave him a $1,000 a month budget, and at the end of the year, he still had money saved up. If he was a gambler, there is no way he would have been able to live off that budget. Also, when his Angels teammates went to the casino and invited him to go with them, he declined and told them that gambling is not good and asked them why they would waste their money like that. And this is the person that so many cynical people think Shohei is a gambling addict.

As frugal as Ohtani has been rumored to be in every story we heard before this. I find it incredibly difficult to believe he was gambling to the point of racking up that much debt. I really think the Dodgers or MLB spun the he stole it story to distane Ohtani from this as much as possible. I think it is entirely likely he was paying the debt off for the man just being a good friend helping the dude put of a really bad spot. We will find out the truth if he gets indicted for larceny form stealing the funds. If he isn't there is another story and MLB covered it.

Shoehei lived off of almost no money in Japan and his mom take care of all his money. He came over to the US sooner for less money because of his love for the game. Ohtani can’t be banned from MLB unless he bet on baseball. If he bet on other sports, which it’s been stated no bets were on baseball, he will receive, from MLB not CA gov, a fine/suspension. I heard via Effectively Wild the only instance of betting on OTHER sports by an MLB player was Jarred Cosart (?), the point is when he was caught he paid a penalty of some undisclosed amount and served no games suspended. With that prior precedent in place you think something similar would happen. The problem though is from CA law and the illegal bookmaker. That’s what will cause something to happen to Ohtani. You know, unless Ippei actually is the bestest friend ever and takes all the blame…
