It could have been so much easier to explain if you overlaid diagrams. I still have no idea what a mono passenger cell is not what it looks like. A comparison between the most basic ways of building cars in diagram form would have been much better to a layman like myself.

Ah seems rather complicated? Frame/chassis = serves a structural purpose. Supports the components bolted to it. Rigidity contributes to safety. Body = serves a practicality purpose as well as safety. Monocoque combines the two into one piece. ‘Monocoque combines chassis and frame’ doesn’t make sense to me.

GetUpFalcon Frame is rarely used to mean chassis in the UK. For example, a Morgan has a steel chassis and a wooden frame, to which the body panels are fixed.

Not being an engineer I do remember reading years ago, actually decades ago, vaguely that in aircraft industry design during the Second World War the term 'monocoque' was used when a flat steel sheet was 'stretched' or put under tension and then stamped to produce the part. The idea was that this increased the strength of the stamped part. Does anyone know if this is correct, or does the term simply refer to a type of unibody, stamped or otherwise? Thanks.

You didn’t really explain the difference between a monocoque and a normal car frame. I still have no idea what it is. A normal car frame is also a cell that protects its passengers.

In a monocoque the body is the chassis like an egg. The Mclaren has a cell which is referred to as a monocoque without really being one.

My favorite is the Alfa Romeo 4C. Did you really say "woeful?" I think you said "wonderful," but it sure sounded like "woeful," which would not make any sense at all. Hmm. Yes and no. Even the McLaren "monocoque" has box sections that form a frame like structure and airplanes that have stressed skin construction have a framework of ribs and stringers to help the skin resist buckling. Then take a typical frame structure like the chassis of a Lotus 7 or a bicycle, their frames are made of thin wall stressed skin tubes that are mini monocoques. The only pure monocoque I can think of is an egg and the only true space frame is an electricity pylon, everything else is a mixture and a compromise. To argue that a steel saloon car is not a true momocoque but a McLaren is is silly and pointless.

You know, alot of people go on about how they love cars, are into cars, they are car enthusiasts..... yet more than 6 minutes on the different ways cars are built is too much for these people. I call bullshit on being interested in cars and I say its alot of people are attention and status whores.... and THAT is why they are into cars. Also, there is no way that is a single piece of CF. It would be multiple blends of multi-bias sections laminated together. If not your CF that is good at resisting tension and terrible at resisting compression would not make you safe once you make contact with said tree.
