This guy is great. That is precisely how I feel about my old books. You look back and kind of wince because you are seeing not what is on the page, but also your INTENTION for what you think should have been on that page. I have to stop myself and realize; This is objectively not garbage, in fact, it is good, I just see what I wanted to write here instead of what is.

Our art teacher told us that if we liked our works then we were not real artists. Honestly, this message just broke my desire to draw consistently for years, because I internalized it (and most likely misinterpreted, too). Whenever I sat down to draw (or even write), all I could think about is how bad everything is, and how of a shit artist and writer I was, and I couldn't continue to do it. What's the point of continuing to do anything if you're never good enough? Of course, getting critique is important to grow as an artist, but if your works are getting continually bashed and bashed even in your head, if you're never good enough even for yourself then you just get more drained in the end. I think allowing yourself to like something in your work or noticing when you're good at something can also go a long way. That doesn't mean you have to love everything you produce, but rather balance everything out. Sure, I can't really argue with the professor, because I'm not a professional artist (professionals and hobbyists prioritize different things in the craft, I believe), but I still wanted to share what I think. I think constantly bashing yourself and never be happy with your work will just kill any desire to create in the end. There has to be a balance between being proud of yourself and be critical of your work, learning how to take criticism from other people and especially yourself is a skill of its own and is important to develop.

Yes exactly, I have this convo woth my bf from time to time. I get it cause I don't have great self-confidence, so he tried to help, and even he is the same as me when it comes to his writing and crafts😅. But I have like certain things about work and sometimes it is sad when someone like the most simplest work you've done that the thing you've worked so hard at.

It’s unfortunate your teacher made that comment to you just beginning your study, because what he/she said was B.S. when we draw, we may like what’s working in a picture and dislike what’s not working it shouldn’t be based on good or bad. On critical critique those words should be exempted. I can do a study and love one particular line then I am quite satisfied, and I keep pushing forward. Bottom line is I see what’s working in the elements of design and what’s not and the more I do it I see differently. Because once the piece is done it lives outside of me.

The last part is just awesome! Very nice to hear this again. It's what Flaubert said once : to have one good sentence he would erase 9 out of 10. It takes time - and the will to make room for better stuff by erasing- to build up something valuable I guess.

He's talking about perfectionism, which is actually a character flaw. So artists need to be fundamentally flawed to make great art.

Many will tell you if it’s not working throw it away. That bothers me because I remember those movies where the writer desperately tries to find the right word or words in the mean time paper balls are filling the trash bin. But an epiphany happens and the writer goes back to a few paper balls before and finds the golden nugget.

I just watched Annie Hall-- it kinda sucked. Then Manhattan- a homely guy doing a beautiful innocent high school girl. Then Hannah-- which was creepy- a guy cheating on his wife with her sister and trying to justify it- which was at the same time Allen was sleeping with his real wife's daughter Soon-yi. His women characters talk in this breathless little-girl unsure-of-themselves way. He adopted 2 girls- I hope they are OK.

Let the work speak for itself. Image is part of any sale, BUT being approachable and sociable is more important than any particular spiritualism or structure. If a guy is really interested and driven to tell the story, he has a chance. How he carefully uses that chance to tell a great story in a great way or throws the chance away to preach, regardless of what he's preaching... That's up to him. :o)
