A bittersweet ending is almost always more powerful than a purely happy one. Owl house had the good guys kill the villain and then everyone got the happiest possible ending. Luz in particular gets to have the best of both worlds, literally! Amphibia had the girls say goodbye to their Amphibia friends and family potentially forever, and the emotions there felt real. The characters on both sides move on, but would never forget the relationships they had made with each other. To me that felt much more poignant than one where every good guy gets everything they could ever want.

I understand your opinion. I don't completely agree, but I get it. Just a small correction, because you said /every good guy gets everything they could ever want./ - King wanted more than anything to get together with his father to find out what he is, well, yes, he found out what he is, but his father is already completely dead, and now he lives in his lifeless corpse and is presumed to be the last of his kind. I don't see this as something he would want. Or Eda and Lilith both still have their curses, yes, they manage them, but they still have to drink their elixirs and accordingly they can't do natural magic either, I suppose that the harpy forms are some kind of compromise, but still. Or Hunter, who is not only covered in scars, but also lost his best friend, and to some extent he himself killed him with his own hands, not by his will, obviously, but still, and regardless of the fact that he was replaced, , he didn't get it back in any way, and that's something he really valued and I don't think he ever wanted that. And Luz somewhat had a downside because she lost her glyphs, and yes I know they brought it back because King now has his own now but his are no match for the previous titan's and will most likely take millennia to develop until he grows up, so somewhat from a certain point of view, She also has a downside and I think they let her learn magic not so much because she will be able to use it but rather out of generosity. And let's not forget and perhaps the most important detail - they are actually not out of danger at all, because as it turned out the Archivists are still alive and are still somewhere around the universe, we saw for ourselves what the Collector can do, imagine what four are capable of , and as we know they are much more aware than their younger brother and much more extreme in their actions, I mean if anyone dares to contradict them they literally wipe out entire planets, if these guys find out there is still life on the planet and that there is one surviving titan, the good guys are absolutely, to say the least, finished and that's not even debatable. And I'm not saying it because I want to argue with you or because it annoys me that someone has a different opinion, but these are simply the facts.
@TiMoThY211991
@TiMoThY211991 Жыл бұрын
You would have more of a point if any of these things were actually focused on as something to make the ending less happy. In my initial post, I almost added "(short of bringing back the dead)" thinking of the Titan and Flapjack, but deleted it because Luz literally did come back from the dead. Glyph magic dying is very much mitigated by new glyphs. The acceptance of the Owl Beast and the Harpy forms is a happier outcome than purging the owl beast would have been. If there were to be a sequel series the archivists potentially being a threat would give us pause, but as there is nothing planned, there's really no need to dwell on them at all; the characters sure didn't. Basically, given the characters who died, the ending we got was the happiest possible one we could have gotten, to the point where they even undid the coven sigils, and Hunter got a new Palisman! Given how the first two season finales leaned very much into that bittersweet "we succeeded, but at what cost" vibe, it was surprising that the show concluded with an entirely happy ending. Also, any loss the good side sustained in the finale, whether permanent or temporary, was merely a result of Belos acting evil, rather than a sacrifice anyone on the good side made.

@@TiMoThY211991 I'm sorry but what. No, I totally have a point. Because first of all, these are facts, no matter who focuses on what, I can focus on everything good that happens on, say, a specific day, but that won't make all the bad things that happen parallel to it invalid, right? Also thought about the following, if the ending was all sad and played out and focused as such, would that make some things that are frankly nice, invalid, simply because they are not in focus, but nevertheless exist and are known about by the viewers. And I say again - I don't want to argue with you, and I didn't say this to annoy you, and in fact, from a purely technical point of view, I agree with you, but these are simply things that cannot be ignored. You can't tell me that kid, his father died and now he lives in his corpse and tell me that this is what he always wanted because it obviously isn't .............. /unless we're talking about a sociopath child / . Also - how come the characters did not reflect the danger of the Archivists, in the prologue Amity is seen holding a book on which three huge figures are drawn, hinting that they have not forgotten about them at all and plan to find out as much as possible about their history. for this was, as far as can be said, a history book. Saying these guys aren't a threat is potentially like saying Bill Cipher is out of the picture simply because no one on the show focused on the fact that he would still be alive, yes the characters didn't know about the reverse message but if I I have a literal god as an enemy, I personally would have one in mind, / information from comics does not count /

@@borislavangelov2933 The fact that some bad stuff did happen, does not actually make the ending feel less happy. I'm mostly talking about the epilogue here, because admittedly there was a bittersweet moment when Luz told King about his father, but after the time jump, everything worked out just about as well as it possibly could have. I don't expect the archivists to come back and kill everyone offscreen, so unless The Owl House somehow continues, they are not canonically a threat that will have to be dealt with. They absolutely could have made the ending feel bittersweet, but that is not the tone they chose. And to me, the "everything is better now" plus "main character gets to have it all" feel they went with for the epilogue of the Owl House felt less poignant than the ending of Amphibia.
@borislavangelov2933

@@timgilbert9572 My guess is that they chose the happy ending for Luz mainly because purely thematically it is more related to the idea of the story. Anyway, I say again, I don't say this out of disagreement, but rather because some things that we have seen as an existing fact, which are frankly not exactly happy, are being ignored. Otherwise, the ending was super happy, that's right, but I don't understand why this is a problem for some, as long as it makes sense in relation to the story being told, I personally don't mind any ending. I mean, everyone I ask who is of this opinion says something along the lines of "one made me cry more", so what exactly is the criterion here, which made me cry more, because I don't see that at all as good criteria for two reasons. First - it's super subjective. Second - I've seen people non-ironically cry like babies at movies like Revenge of the Sith / which is not an example of a good movie at all / and non-ironically say that the movie is great because they felt great emotions, ignoring the fact that the movie is super wooden and sterile almost all the time.

To me, Amphibia connects with me more on an emotional level that The Owl House does. The drama between the characters is more significant and it’s executed really well. Also, Calamity Anne is awesome. It’s a great take on the super form cliche that reminds me a lot of Super Sonic. And the series finale hits a lot harder. Seeing the characters never go back to Amphibia hits a lot harder than the character in TOH not being able to use magic. Really, the ending for TOH isn’t really an ending. It’s an opportunity for Disney to expand the franchise. (Also, it is a war crime that the full OST isn’t on Spotify.)

Amphibia really has the best character development in any show PERIOD. The way it focuses on the ENTIRE town really makes you believe and feel for the townsfolk. Not to mention when the townsfolk develop, so do the main characters. Even though there are main characters, EVERYONE gets a chance to shine which is really incredible. It makes the world feel WAY more connected then the Owl House and this helps the stakes of Season 3 (of Amphibia) feel even bigger when you realize just how many people are affected by it. Heck, even the citizens of Newtopia were shown as well. Having main characters grow at the same time as the side characters really helps make things come together, something the Owl House really lacked as its focus was heavily on its main characters. That’s why (I feel) the end of the world/resistance thing didn’t really work as well in the Owl House as it did in Amphibia. In Amphibia you SAW and FELT the impact of the end of the world but for the Owl House it’s was kind of just an inconvenience because there was barely any character development/world building. The only others places visited in the Owl House were uninhabited by people or weren’t really residents of the Boiling aisles (The Titan Hunters were located in another realm so to speak). In Amphibia EVERYONE was working together to defeat Andrias but in the Owl House it was only a select few students. And yes, I am aware that the owl house was shortened so there may have been more time to develop characters that was cancelled but you have to judge a show based on what it is.

If there's one thing I definitely appreciate about Amphibia is that it takes the Spider-Man 2 approach of developing as many side characters/inhabitants of the town/city as possible. In Amphibia's case, that's mainly Wartwood. That way, when said towns are put in danger for the finale, Wartwood for Season 1, Newtopia for Season 2, and to a lesser extent Earth in Season 3, you care about what's at stake. Wartwood especially is important. Had the show never developed Wally, Ivy, Mayor Toadstool, and Loggle, I would not have cared about what happens to the town in Season 1 when Sasha threatens mass murder on them. But because the show did develop them, it makes them standing up to Toad Tower all the more powerful. In The Owl House, I don't really know much about the rest of the Boiling Isles besides the main cast. I don't know much about Boscha, Skara, The Bat Queen, or even Principal Bump. I still care for them, and like how they stand up to Belos, but it's just not as powerful as Wartwood standing up to the Sasha and Grime.

I think the Cultural representation, visual gags, world building, heck even the messaging, although for Owl House it did made sense, works a lot well in Amphibia. However, I also think both the character development and emotional moments actually works well for both shows.

Yeah Both shows have Strong merits but Amphibia just resonates with me more over the years, with world-building, character arcs, and the Lore/history of the World of Amphibia. Which I personally feel was inspired by Zelda Breath of the Wild style, or Adventure Time and the land of OOO. Both worlds have that cool open world feeling that you just wanted to explore the history of. Course my obsession of exploring how the story of Amphibia was gonna end played into this factor. Honestly if Season 3 wasn’t forced into taking the tonal whiplash and actually played it’s strengths to it’s limits in Season 3 would’ve been 10/10 show to me.

I think both shows had the right ending for what their respective themes were. Amphibia was always about change and learning to accept that, so it works really well for the worlds to be divided and for the trio to move on with their memories of their time in Amphibia. The Owl House was about finding acceptance and community with other people - something Luz was sorely lacking prior to the story. She found that community in the Boiling Isles, friends and a second family, and was able to reconcile with her mom because of it. She found her belonging, she was always meant to have both. Whereas Amphibia was more of a Stage In Life for Ann - something that was good and important and you miss it when it's gone, but it can't last forever. I honestly agree that Amphibia's ending was stronger, but I think both were excellent in what they were trying to do. TOH's ending might've been idealistic, but it made just as much thematic sense as Amphibia's did

I've said this before and I'll say it again: Two things I think Amphibia did VERY well, better than any show I've seen, are worldbuilding and subtle foreshadowing. Amphibia feels like a world where anything could exist, especially now that we've gotten the reveal of an entirely new continent that we literally know nothing about. It's amazing how much of Amphibia we DID manage to explore though, to the point where I'm surprised at just how creative the crew got with it while still managing to tell a coherent story. And the foreshadowing. Like I've said, Gravity Falls was the nearest competition in this regard, but Amphibia surpassed its predecessor. While Gravity Falls had clear foreshadowing moments with its whole Mystery and Secrets element surrounding the entire town, Amphibia's was more of the subtle variety. Sometimes you wouldn't even *guess* that something was foreshadowing until it came true. Ex: Loggle's buff statue of himself way back in season 1, Anne calling Domino "an interdimensional being beyond all time and space," and Polly getting an itchy butt right before she grew her legs.

I always did hold TOH's happy ending against it tbh. It felt like a nod back to the renaissance era of Disney and not something fitting for the current time. By keeping it bittersweet by means of the means of maximum perceivable happiness being "indefinite" instead of convincingly "permanent" (that is to say re-connection between worlds), Amphibia concluded much more fluidly I would say. Besides, 10 years is what I would call the average change time (ACT). It seems like something major happens every decade that shifts societal thinking in a different direction or makes a major splash that sticks out in most minds for about that much time. Eras themselves seem to last that long. My point being that 10 years seems long enough for Amphibia and Earth to have grown independently and reconnect again without compromising any maturity and health in the process. It felt that way when I had my 10-year high school reunion last year. People were similar and different at the same time in good ways. As for your other points -A+ Cultural Representation: With the massive emphasis on how much it meant to Anne, I was inspired to look up Thai culture as a research hobby. I would go on record and say that other shows that make a pass at CR without going into further depth about it and provide so many interesting examples do not warrant that kind of interest-grabbing and research-prompting sway. - Emotional moments. TOH has a lot of them, but so many of them, I find it almost desensitizing. Amphibia plays that circular illusion you described so brilliantly that it is probably why the reveal in "The Beginning of the End" of Marcy being treated like a third wheel by Anne and Sasha horrified me and hit closer to home than almost anything else in the entire show. I've watched a lot of hard-hitting shows, but nothing hit harder than this right here. - Comedy. Perfectly funny and expertly nuanced with the major emotional moments here and there. By keeping the designs simple most of the time, the animators had a lot more liberty to put those meme-worthy facial moments in there. - World-building: Coming from me who is too intimidated to get deep into games like Terraria and Skyrim due to the difficult/unfulfilling tutorials and early branches, this has so much to it that points that it's easy to make a casual Role Play with them and make them plausible within the show itself. There's just so much world-building that the potential for short stories, novels, prequels, midquels, and filler background details is endless.

Can you please(Genuinely) tell me what you would of done to make the Owl House's Ending more bittersweet? Because when people say that, all I can think of is Luz being separated from the Demon Realm like Anne, Marcy, and Sasha were from Amphibia, and that's not an ending I would accept, especially sense that would conflict with the show's theming and message, and I wouldn't accept anything that would prevent Lumity from staying a thing either, Like Luz or Amity dying. Of course I know you're not suggesting either of those things, but without taking a deep dive myself, which I haven't yet, nor am I sure I would go about it, I'm not sure how you'd go about giving the Owl House a Bittersweet ending. Plus, are Idealistic endings really that bad? Because I can't help but love and prefer The Owl House's ending more than I do Amphibia's. I know the Bittersweet and often times worse reality has to be acknowledged, but I can't really see Idealistic endings as bad either, as long as you don't go to fair with them. I guess I just couldn't mainly accept Anne and her friends being separated from Amphibia and the friends and family they made there. Sure, you have to accept change, but how often in reality do you have to permanently leave behind friends and family like that? Especially without being able to text or call them? Does that sort of bittersweet ending really line up with what we should often expect from reality? It's of course not impossible, but it doesn't really reflect the sort of bittersweet things most people would have to go through, so again, was Anne and her friends being separated from Amphibia really the right kind of bittersweet ending we could or should of gotten from Amphibia? Maybe it would have been better for it to Focus on Marcy leaving Anne and Sasha and not seeing them until the epilogue? And/or Maybe the ending could of focused on the New Government of Amphibia, while on a good course, not going as smoothly as everyone would of liked? given how you have to go from having a 1000-year-old Monarch as a practical institution in of himself to a whole new and unproven government, with a 1000-year-old racial grudge that I doubt Amphibia is entirely over just because of a 13-year-old girl. So again, was that really the best bittersweet ending Amphibia could have given us?

Like at the end of Hopping Mall. Sure they brought up Anne's mom a lot, but it wasn't really in a sad way all that much, and then at the end suddenly it's this big, sad, emotional thing about the 2 talking about their moms. Dude, the reason why I love Amphibia more is definitely tied to the character interactions and comedy. It's so funny, and I have such a blast watching these characters and the world, that I don't even care if nothing plot important is happening. Some of my favorite episodes are "filler" episodes. The Owl House is great, don't get me wrong, but it's clear it's more plot heavy and that's what Dana wanted to do but Disney forced it into an episodic slat in s1 at least.

I totally agree with you - Amphibia connected more with me better than the Owl House did. Sure, when TOH premiered, what excited me most about it was Luz, a Latin American character that I could relate to as a Latinx person. But I didn't get interested for too long, and probably another slight con of its representation is just simply the lack of experiences that Luz gets regarding her ethnicity - maybe because simply, the creator isn't Latin American and therefore didn't make it a core part like Matt Braly did. Regardless, Luz was represented excellently and it's clear Dana and the writers put their best efforts. One of the reasons I love Amphibia is because of it's characters - Marcy in particular since I strongly related to her and loved her to bits (and still do!). Another point is that simply, Amphibia's worldbuliding is slightly more original. When you think about it, The Owl House has relatively a similar world to that of Harry Potter and other media involving witches and medieval fantasy. It has its interesting points, but Amphibia's tropical frog world is an upgrade for me - and you also have unique creatures and robots! Either way, both shows are excellent as you have said, and everyone will take them differently.

These are my thoughts on Amphibia as a whole: I have recently watched Amphibia and at first, I thought that Anne's flaws were beyond that of a regular teenage girl by immediately jumping into driving Bessie the snail without considering reading Hop Pop's manual in order to do it properly, giving in to peer pressure from the tad tax collectors, even though she's been told that they are willing to damage people's homes to find the tax, not being a fan of playing teams in sport, having trouble trusting her teachers, being desparate for answers to the point of getting into trouble, accepting a shady deal with the curator because she discovered a CD player from Earth, that lead her to being a victim of being petrified into a wax figure, standing inside the parade when she was just supposed to be watching it from the side, threatening the kids who cut in front of her while she waited for 3 hours in line for the Newtopia arcade, thinking that she was trying to be assertive and speak up, and many more reckless and impulsive decisions. And the episodes in Season 1 were your typical slice-of-life stories where the characters learn valuable life lessons like you see in The Proud Family, Pepper Ann, Static Shock, The Loud House, My Little Pony, and most preschool shows, to be honest. But once I've watched the rest of the series, Oh my God, this is My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and Steven Universe Future all over again. I have heard so many people say that Amphibia is one of the greatest cartoons of all time, and by looking back at this, I can see exactly why. Amphibia stands out as an example of the power of simplicity and how it can make a story more engaging with a story built on impressive worldbuilding and life lessons that were cleverly used as steps towards character development, charming humor that is guaranteed to give all audiences a smile, a refreshingly light-hearted tone that makes the later dark moments more effective, a refreshing and authentic representation of Thai culture with Anne Boonchuy and her family, nice animation with charmingly simplistic designs, a vibrant Amphibian-themed world, and engaging battle sequences, loveable characters that can range from having an enjoyable personality, to having lots of flaws while still being likeable, some of the best character development with Anne and her friends learning from their bad habits and becoming more loveable people, an emotional core that shows how much the characters actually care about each other, a sublte exploration of how even the strongest friendships can be toxic at times, the flashbacks show that their flaws are because they are willing to give a good contribution to their friendship, even if things go wrong, and a message of change and letting go of the things you love to grow as a better person. This is definitely a must watch for anyone who is curious.

I more or less agree about the mentioned advantages that Amphibia has over TOH and for me there's another one. I really like the idea of three separated, yet united with their previous bond, characters who find teir own way in this alien world and give us their different view of the world and their previous relationship. For me this one allows Amphibia to really outshine TOH even if sasha and Marcy were underutilized in the show itself. But this is just subjective of course.

The problem with worldbuilding is I don’t think Owl House opens itself up to the typical worldbuilding because of the weird nature of the island We got some interesting locations like the raised knee and the head We never learn why the head is sacred or why the knee has so much more magic, maybe there’s more titans blood deposits at the knee or something and maybe the head is sacred for obvious reasons since the Titan is like a god But there’s not much you can really do with it. Amphibia is abit more open to being classical fantasy like, these cities can have governments and history and whatnot, whereas Owl House just had the emperor and all his guys being basically the entire government The simplicity of its world limits what you can say with world-building. Maybe that’s a sign of poor world-building, or maybe it means you don’t need a complex world. I can’t really decide

For me, the Amphibia world felt more alive, and more nuanced. The boiling isles has more outlandish designs for its demon world. But it seems we see just of lot of humanoid looking characters and not much else. Yeah Amphibia’s Civilians are only one of three species, but they have more varied designs, and it feels every new location includes new background characters that makes the world feel populated. It just feels like we see the same background characters in TOH. We also see more species in Amphibia that make it feel like a thriving planet with complete ecosystems. We barely see many species in The Owl House. We also see there is a species based caste system in Amphibia, whereas we don’t really see any kinds of bias in the Isles. One would think there might be some kind of history of prejudice, maybe there would be Witch supremacists, who see Witches as the best species because they are the most dominant. Maybe there is hatred against demons without magic, and they are seen as burdens to society, the way humans see those with physical and mental disabilities as burdens. Maybe that is why we only see bipeds in Hexside.

That’s honestly How I feel about Amphibia’s world as a whole really. There’s just a more “lived in” feeling that Amphibia’s towns and cities just make it all feel real. @@abareamphibia6812 Look, in principle, I understand any opinion, but what you said is simply scandalous. The Boiling Isles are a pretty unique location for a fantasy setting, and they're pretty subverted actually. Do you know what Generic is? I will tell you . Generic is / especially in fantasy / mostly conflicts in cold or wooded lands with handsome knights in shiny armor fighting evil forces that appeared out of nowhere, with castles, prophecies, dark lords and of course my "favorite" the chosen hero or heroes who will save the world from evil or prove themselves or become kings or some other tired trope we've seen 1,000,000 times. In other words, it's something that's been seen so many times that it makes you sick when you hear it. Now tell me which of these descriptions could apply to the Boiling Isles. I will tell you / with the exception of the fact that there is magic / none of these descriptions can be found on the boiling islands. The setting is located in the corpse of a fallen titan from thousands of years ago - tell me how many stories have you read or watched where the setting is like this, such a location for a home would you expect from a villain, hell, tell me how many stories will include titans as the main characters players, side note Attack on Titan doesn't count because it's not exactly fantasy, or at least not completely. The characters and in general the inhabitants of the boiling islands are also quite atypical, in normal fantasy stories they will be presented as the villains, separately the setting itself is very grotesque looking considering that this is the environment for the good guys as well. Yes, there are forests and castles from time to time, but they are by no means the main focus. There are no dark lords here, no prophecies, no invincible evil, and thank god there is no chosen one, because if I see this again, I will shoot myself. But speaking of that, let's see Amphibia's setup, shall we? Forests and castles - here. warriors - kind of . An evil that must be defeated, otherwise it all ends - here. Prophecy - here. Chosen heroes assigned to save everything - oh YEAH, here. Well, it turns out that Amphibia is quite generic, my friend. The only difference is that there are amphibians instead of people. If you take people from the Middle Ages and put them there, there won't be any difference as a way of life, which cannot be said for the Boiling Isles.

@@abareamphibia6812 I can understand where you are coming from, and you make various great points, such as how the isles is definitely more unique than Amphibia. I think The Owl House’s problem is that it doesn’t really explore the full potential of it’s world. Mythical creatures stem from the isles, we barely see any outside of unicorns, griffons, and some dragons. In Amphibia, we see multiple species, which live in multiple environments. While Anne does stay in Wartwood for most of the series, we see many more towns and environments such as deserts, tundras, villages, and Newtopia. In the Owl House, we don’t really see any other town other than bonesbourough. We see Latissa, but even Luz acknowledges she hasn’t seen much of the isles outside of that one town.

I understand not all shows need some grandeur plot and climax, but I feel like in some crucial moments (ie: Mother Olm telling Anne about the Ultimate sacrifice) could do with a little less comedy. I always say, 'A good writer can pull an audience, but a great author can change a hater's mind'. I never liked the stereotypical 'slice of life' style episodes, even in shows I'd argue are my top hyperfixations. That kind of show or episode never grew on me and was that one episode or show I avoided at all cost, I hated that style of writing so much. But Amphibia season 1 is like 90% 'slice of life' so why do I like it, but not in other super hyper fixations? The reason is that it's meant to be like that in the first place. Amphibia thrives in it's character arks. For Anne, it was growing to accept responsibility and a change of pace in life. We saw both in the start of the series and in the flashbacks, that on Earth the Anne we knew was mostly her with her friends, doing dumb pointless fast-paced things. She was a type of kid who gave into peer pressure from her friend Sasha, and did whatever she was told. The Anne we came to love was someone who was forced away from her parents, making her miss them since this time she didn't CHOSE to leave them, and her connecting with her frog family, in a slow paced unaccepting environment without Sasha to tell her what to do. I love that the slice of life style of the show was used to improve Anne as a character, instead of one shot style adventures that mean nothing to the plot.

I agree Amphibia is the superior show OVERALL, but for different reasons: First, you’re right, Amphibia’s world building is more in depth, but it also has more originality to it. The boiling isles is creative but on the surface it’s just another fantasy world, we haven’t seen a world with talking amphibians before this. Second, I actually disagree with you about the humor, the Owl house has a slight advantage because the humor comes from the ENVIRONMENT, not just the characters, plus the humor is more consistent. Third, with the exception of Luz, all the characters in Amphibia are either more interesting or more relatable than the Owl houses characters.

From a subjective point of view, I can understand your position, but I would strongly disapprove of one specific thing, and that is that Amphibia's emotional moments are stronger because the show is mostly silly and when something dark happens, it is felt more strongly. I'm not happy with it because while, yes, it does create a contrast and it's felt, but from a structural point of view, I don't think it's a good idea because if it's fun most of the time, the build-up is lost, and the supposed emotion grabs you out of nowhere, and that breaks the balance. If anyone wants proof, look at almost the entire third season, it was a tonal mess - in one episode the frog family /for some reason/ instead of worrying about the situation they are in, go visit a Taiwanese temple and have fun /wtf/ and keep in mind that a supposed war is on the horizon and these types of scenarios continue all season long. it's one thing to do it once or twice and thus fake the calm before the storm, but they do it constantly after the third episode in a row where Anne and the frogs do some stupid thing instead of really thinking about things in Newtopia and apart from that until at this point as far as they know Marcy is DEAD and no one cares or cares enough, it's starting to annoy me personally. By raising the stakes so high, you can't constantly joke along the way, so firstly, you destroy the tone for the viewers, and secondly, which is more important, in fact, the emotional moments come not so much as pure emotion, but rather as emotional manipulation, because until two years ago episode, we've been defeating the bad guys with dances and suddenly now someone dies, I mean, that's not ok for me.

Yeah that actually makes sense. There was something didn’t like about the ending and I think this describes my issue. It did lack the build up and suspense that should’ve have gone along with the circumstances. And when the time did come it came all at once They kinda did it with the B plot with Sasha preparing the people for the war. But when we’d cut back over to Anne it kinda lost momentum when it seems like they aren’t really processing what’s happening It did have some impactful effect, doing it this way, but it certainly detracted at least a little from this big story beat

In a perfect world, both shows would have had all the needed time to shine, with two full fledged seasons. But if the fate of one of them was inevitable, I personally feel the one to be shortened should have been Amphibia. And this is NOT a slander on the show nor am I claiming which one "deserved" it or not. As I said, in a perfect world, both of them would have had their full time to shine. But in comparison, if the second half of TOH was a bit rushed and didn't get to explain all the details about its lore and even just its story and characters, Amphibia on the other had a third season that wasn't necessary in its entirety. And this is not saying I didn't enjoy it, it was fun, but I feel it's a common sentiment that it didn't hit quite all the spots it needed to. If the fates of the two shows were inverted, I feel like it could actually be somewhat "beneficial" (again, still taking into consideration that in an ideal world both TOH and Amphibia are telling all the story they need at the pace they want) to have three specials instead of one full, a bit dispersive, season. The first special, just like "Thanks to Them", is dedicated to Anne and the Planters in the human world. Sure, the shenanigans were fun and all, but let's be honest, not all of them were that necessary in the grand scheme of things, and concentrating on the most focal things could make some of the criticisms towards season 3A fade away. The second special is dedicated to when they go back to Amphibia and join the resistance. In the grand scheme of things, some of those episodes didn't amount to much and could very easily be shortened in a more compact story. The third and last special would be of course the last two episodes of the canon show, either left as they are or with just a few sequences here and there cut to fit into the timing. They're good as a finale as they are, after all. So yeah, don't mind me, it was just a bit of a thought experiment we may say, and I also reiterate that with this I'm not saying Amphibia deserved to be shortened more than The Owl House: neither of them did. But it's funny to imagine alternative scenarios sometimes.

TOH reasonates with me better, but characters like Anne are an exception. I really relate to her in terms of self-discovery and I'd also count Sprig here for how hard is for me to accept change, just like it happens to him and I embrace Anne's final message, even quoting it to others

In my opinion the only thing that I did hate was how anne just kinda ignored Marcys death but i do agree even if TOH got a complete s2 and full s3 I'd still think character writing and story goes to amphibia

The only thing that i dont like about amphibia is the fact that the first thing Anne said in s3 was “IM HOMEEE” not something about seing her friend literally get stabbed in front of her, but other than that, Amphibia is criminally underrated, like it’s better than the owl house there’s no debate about it

TOH: Better storytelling, better plot pacing, better LGBTQ+ representation, and darker themes Amphibia: Better characterization, better world building, better culture, better humor, better themes, and better ending Overall, Amphibia is better for me because it feels more full. They don’t just cut ideas halfway or rush storylines the way TOH does, they have a full world with characters to fill it up, and they have more interesting filler episode ideas.

I do agree with most of these points, but the reason why so many plot points in the owl house were left unfinished is that the show wasn’t given a full season 3. (Unlike Amphibia)

@@liampemberton9320 Yeah, but even with what TOH had (mainly looking at season 1), the characters barely had anything to them and unless your name is Luz, Hunter, King, or Belos, you’re irrelevant

Good point with Amphibia having a more poetic ending. Don’t think Owl House could pull off the same thing though because like Luz and Amity were together, they’d have to split, and there also wasn’t any reason she’d have to go home and never return since King would grow up eventually and could just casually open portals even if you said the collector couldn’t do that. It would raise more questions than answers if they did it, and would be pretty sad

I think there's two sides to some of these points. I completely agree, Amphibia's world building is more in depth and covers more people and locations. Paradoxically, this makes Amphibia's world feel smaller. It feels like we have a full understanding and background of every species in Amphibia. It works really well for Wartwood as a small town, but it feels like what we seen on screen encompasses most of what happens in Amphibia. This could very well be a me thing, but I wonder if anyone else feels the same? Also, while Amphibia is overwhelmingly lighthearted with a few intentionally placed emotional scenes, the latter part of the Owl House is the inverse. As the tone gets darker, mundane or comedic moments become rare and more meaningful. Them's the Brakes Kid is a break from the plot for both the audience and the characters. It's just Eda telling a fun, slice-of-life story to her family. It's a wholesome episode wouldn't have the same impact if it were placed in season one. Or an even better example of this juxtaposition: goop Belos dragging his decaying body across a mass grave of his brother's clones and telling them to shut up.

tbh owl house was good but i feel like amphibia developed their not main characters better like besides hunter, eda, king, luz and kinda amity nobody else really got any memorable development gus and willow got like maybe 6 episodes total and mostly in early season 1 and i wish they got more because i love those two i litterally almost forgot amity was a bully before luz im not sure if it was just me but i thought she changed from bully to friend a lil too quick none of the hexide students/teachers got developed at all pretty much none of the non-witch characters got developed pretty much (besides king and hooty i guess) srsly there were so many characters with cool designs that wernt witches and pretty much none of them got ant any attention besides being background characters i also feel like we could have gone more places other than the owl house, hexide, bonesborogh, etc. like i get we went other places before but honestly t feels like the world of toh is a lot smaller than the world of amphibia because weve seen a lot of places in amphibia

@@potattherapistmobile2149 Uh no, Belos is your standard "Evil Bigot from the 1600s" and the Collector was basically just a Kid with God Powers. Andrias was a once genuinely good and compassionate guy, who felt as though his friends betrayed him and thus hardened his heart and went along with what his father, part of the Core, made him believe. The Core is a bit bland and really should've been Andrias's dad in the driver's seat but still memorable.

@@thefanwithoutaface8105 yeah belos is just way better. He has way more build up, a much better mystery behind his reveal, a much better and evolving design, and was generally way more intimidating and had a much bigger presence. In comparison, andrias is just a rushed and uninteresting character who served an even more uninteresting character. I never felt the slightest bit of fear or intimidation when andrias was on screen. I always saw him as a joke tbh. Even when he "killed" marcy, i was sad about marcy but I couldnt give less of a shit about him.

I honestly don’t prefer one show over the other; both Owl House and Amphibia are two of the best shows I’ve ever seen. But on the subject of their endings; I honestly prefer Owl House overall. Call it ‘idealistic’, but frankly, after all the hardship Luz went through, she deserved a happy ending. If she was cut off from the Demon Realm, where she found friendship, identity and, above all, love, it would destroy her. To be honest, I’m not fond of the idea of ‘leaving fantasy for reality’ angle; it implies Amphibia wasn’t real for the Trio, when it was. Even so, it’s still a wonderful ending, and I love it.

They’re both great shows, and your video essay is astounding, but one thing I disagree with you on is the ending. They both ended on different notes because the shows were both about different things. The owl house was about finding your people, so Luz got the best of both worlds, and Amphibia was about change, so Anne never sees Amphibia again (this previous sentence may have a bit of bad word choice but yk what I mean) The shows are just about different things so of course they’ll have different endings.
