Soo... I grew up in kenya, started on my aviation journey in high school, now a flight instructor in the US, it never occurred to me ever about the color of my skin or those around me that I went to school with. So, every time I see a black pilot flying heavies I never think anything of it, what really ticks me off , is when someone thinks they are complementing us for being black and overcoming color and being an encouragement to others to follow. Stop it guys! How come a white man’s ethnicity is never mentioned when they fly. Do they somehow do it in their sleep and it’s not a big deal that they are pilots. And we have to work harder to be pilots. No! We can do it in our sleep too... we are pilots! That’s just it! Ask any Nigerian, Senegalese, Kenyan, Ethiopian Tanzanianian pilot if they think at all about being black... no they don’t! Now maybe an African American due the US racial history, but not all of them either. . This guy is African.. I doubt he thinks about being black while flying. He just does!

I’d like to say that aviation is more color blind than other aspects of life in general, but their is a female of color who did a vlog about some of what she went through, and it broke my heart! She did say that once given the chance to prove herself, the issue went away. My favorite Chief Pilot is a guy who was our 1st black Pilot. Louis Freeman. The guy has a heart bigger than life, and was the best leader I ever had.

I flew the (DC-10) KC-10 for the US Air Force for nearly a decade and very few folks realize the long hours (23+ for JV), night ops and broken circadian rhythms. At 12:40 JV mentions a 6-hour (post mission) shuttle ride to Barcelona Spain before entering crew rest for their next departure... Bro' hats off to you young fella, doing the math that's a 23+ hour work day.
