In computer networking, virtual ports are also known as software application ports, logical ports, or TCP/IP ports. Any TCP/IP application uses a virtual port, identified by a port number.
Virtual ports are used in both TCP and UDP to identify unique end-to-end connections. They are called virtual ports because a single physical connector can serve multiple logical connections.

Your understanding of semantics of the word "port" is flawed. Port means window/door/opening in wall. From Latin (and Greek) - Portculis - window. The ports in IT are called ports because they are different windows accepting different packets (as you well know the idea and metaphor behind TCP was post-office, with various windows accepting packets of corresponding types). It has nothing to do with air-ports and sea-ports, which are "a window to air" and "a window to sea" by semantics, respectively.

@@filmrolls3165 nope, this kind of teaching metaphors induces fake "knowledge"; and its no wonder Sunny being a chinglish-speaker may have natural flaws understanding the initial semantics of a foreign language, more so - Latin-born languages.

@@cokeforever I don't think it's flaw, it's flawless, may be organic metaphorer. Language are just a means of communication & more above, it's all about concept you transform with profound knowledge.

@@filmrolls3165 Words define what we visualize while thinking. Imagine: you and me and Sunny sit near a seaport and drinking Porto, you know, talking about an average sysadmin portfolio. When suddenly, a portal from another universe opens and a s-porty looking creature appears and by touching your forehead starts ex-porting their knowledge to your brain. It feels so hard to im-port all this knowledge and your concentration and thoughts are trans-ported back to reading this comment. ;)

@@cokeforever well, your example looks more vague the porto is not even close with portfolio 😉. Its gotta different subject. Actually the topology of networking works just like traffic & transportation & all other protocols are also pretty similar to it. The osi model of networking from layer 1 to layer 7 is good example of all these traffics.
