This video has been so helpful. My father is Mescalero Apache and Navajo. He had a bad childhood and sent to live with different family members between Colorado and Taos, New Mexico. His father and grandfather were alcoholics. My dad never spoke much about his family. My dad now has dementia so there's no more hope of learning more.

Anyone know of apaches in Sonora Mexico? My great grandma was Apache, her father being Apache and her mother Mexican. I took an AncestryDNA test and it came back high percentage “indigenous Americas-Mexico” Sonora and Arizona being a focal point of origin and I was hoping to learn more about what tribes were in those areas

Geronimo's Band of Chiricahua/ Warm Springs Apache was released from prison at Fort Sill in 1913-14 (After being transferred from NM to Florida then to Alabama; and finally Oklahoma). They were imprisoned in 1886, and were sent by rail to the coast in order to prevent future breakouts (The man in charge of NM territory wanted Geronimo to face justice there or be moved as far away as possible). The landscape in Oklahoma was better than any other prison camp they had been in. Hoping to transform Fort Sill into an artillery base/range, they gave the prisoners the option to return to their homelands and be absorbed into the Mescalero Apache Tribe, or stay imprisoned at Fort Sill. Two thirds were released and railed to the Reservation in NM at their own request (This included pretty much all of Geronimo's remaining family). One third refused to leave because they were promised land in Oklahoma by the US Government. It is important to note that most of the people who stayed in prison in 1913 were raised in the prisons they were moved to and from, as well as being forced to boarding schools to be "Americanized". Many didn't even know what their "homeland" looked like. So why would they move to an unfamiliar place after living at Fort Sill for 20 years? They took a gamble that if they held out, they could receive their allotments of private land around the Fort Sill area. Sure enough, it took only one year for the Government to get the allotments and release them from prison in OK. At the time there was only 84 members left (the remaining third). Oklahoma was exempt from the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 that saw the return of the reservation system in the Progressive era and "reculturation" of Native American communities across the country. Because they were so small it took until 1976, for them to become a federally recognized tribe. We are known as the Fort Sill Apache Tribe. We were formed from the decedents of many Chiricahua/Warm Springs Apaches that spent their childhoods in chains, not fighting, not roaming the deserts, and not free. Fast forward to 2020; We have about 800 enrolled members with no fluent native speakers for our dialect of Athabaskan, and our culture is diminished to a point of no return. I am #556 and both of my Great Grandparents were prisoners of war as children. If you would like more info free to email me, or read some books by Henrietta Stockel. (She interviewed many of the prisoners, including our first Chairwoman, before they passed).

Grandmother born in Pinos Altos NM and her father from Santa Rita NM. Santa Rita a wonderful place in the U.S. is now a big hole, thank to the copper mining company! My ancestors would not talk about our heritage at all! Their graves were moved when Santa Rita was razed! I saw my great grandfather's death certificate and found he and his father were in an internment camp in the 1800's, an Apache/Navajo camp in the mid 1800's. That is all I know? A few of my ancestors worked the copper mines of Santa Rita New Mexico.

My family had been in San Antonio Texas for generations. My grandmother always said we were part Lipan apache. Through my research I've come to find that the coahuiltecans and Comanche also settled on that area. What is the most likely tribe i descend from, if my family has been in San Antonio for at least 100 years? We all now reside in California so its hard to get information.

There is a mixture from generations back. Mescaleros Apache are mountainous people in the Ruidoso New Mexico area. Many from West and North west Texas , thru Northern New Mexico , down into New Mexico. Many mexican decendants from Chihuaha Mexico are associated with Apaches.

I found this on accident but its great, I too am apache, its kind of funny really because i use to think i was Mohawk from the fact that family of mine lived there living from ny and all, But later in life i found out that i was actualy Apache & Cherokee, with the ancestors coming from Appalachia, and somewhere around Bolivia. Which was also a surprise to me since both of those places i had grown up thinking were on the other side of the world. I do wander the specific tribes but for me its not so much about information which i could probably dig out myself but rather the money it takes for the information. but thats all up too Hawwah, May the creator of all, father of all, Bless you, thanks for the information. ; It also probably doesn't help that the u.s. government literally since ancient times has changed the spelling of my family's name almost every censes and sometimes multiple times during a censis and even today still mis-write letters into the name when clearly those letters are not in the signature, its pretty odd so people should watch out for that too when they are researching.

Looking through the comments I see a few similar histories to my own. I don't know if any of my native family members were Apache, but my Grandmother used to tell me of her Uncle who would sometimes say we were and sometimes he would claim Navajo. We know for certain we have descendants who were natives who came from New Mexico. My older generation cousin has informed me my Great Grandfather was a sheepherder from El Rancho de Taos. This strongly suggests he was Pueblo, not Navajo or Apache. However there appears to be a grain of truth to the Apache lineage considering the geography of the Pueblo Indians in relation to that of the Jicarilla Apache and to where my Great Grandfather migrated. He and my Great Grandmother migrated to south-eastern Colorado. That said I'm fairly certain their migration was post reservation which makes my theory inconclusive. I simply don't know yet, but I am getting a great deal of pleasure in my pursuit of the truth.

My husband was born in northern Mexico his grandmother’s birth certificate say nation of Apache on it it doesn’t specify giving the area I would say lipan or Mescalero as he does live in the desert. In Mexico the people just know they’re Apache that’s it they don’t have Tribes

I can try.. Would need to research your last name and those of parents ..grandparents and great grand parents and so on. Census counts and ancestry sites can help a bit to trace some of your family history.

It's interesting to me to see a real Indian. I wish I could go back and see their long time ago cultures. See the ways they lived. That would be so interesting.

My great grandparents were slaves. My great grandfather was an escaped slave from Cuba, and ended up becoming a slave in the U.S. in Alabama. Where he met my great grandmother who was a black apache. Would you happen to know maybe what tribe she maybe would be from? Due to her being a slave they took her name and changed it and didn’t document where she came from. ): I just want to learn more about my culture and where I come from. Please help if you can ♥️

Hi, I am Mexican-American and Indian. They say that my grandfather was full blood Apache. I'm told that he was a Chirricahua Indian from Michoacan. Has anyone heard of the Chirricahua Indians? I am trying to find their language to learn as a second language. My grandfather spoke a language that no one understood when he came to live here in the U.S. I was wondering if any one knows the exact language the Chirricahua spoke. If you have any informaton please let me know. God bless you all.

My mother's family says they are Chiricahua, my dna says i'm 43%, i know that dna and blood quantum are two different things, so my BQ if most likely very low, and i'm 95% sure that since none of my family is regestered and that i know next to nothing about the tribe that they would'nt want anything to do with me.

should it be better to use "Nation," instead of "tribe" as the use of tribe according to Webster's dictionary meaning a social group.

I always use country, keeps it common law. Nation is the corporate statute overlay scam. tribe and clan both work but lack the scam legalities. dealing with the corrupt courts I would use the wording of country and or nation depending on whether you want common law or statute legal. when I am dealing with the home office I always say the country of England and never use the statute corporate overlay of U.K. or nation. I use their legal word spells back at them.
