Hey, Jen. If you’re interested in my experience of studying in high school in Idaho Falls, feel free to respond. I didn’t have to change school or host family. In which I lived with a Norwegian student by the way. It was a fascinating experience for me as an atheist/agnostic to spend that time in a religious family and region. And I actually had more American friends than foreign exchange friends.

Americans not knowing where the Czech Republic is is understandable, but I've been an exchange student to France and the people from there also didn't know where the CR is. We're literally one country away. And yes, I got so many remarks about Russia. That was so offensive to me, because of how much pain the communist regime caused us. The students also didn't have that much common knowledge, they didn't even know what the Berlin wall was. That was interesting to find out, because the French schools are SO strict. Incredibly strict, some of my friends even have to go to school on Saturday. Also the teachers required you to show them so much respect, meanwhile in Prague you can chat with your professors in the break time. It was extremely formal and exactly like Anna said, everyone treats you like a child and when you're an exchange student, you're always the bad guy.

Všichni budoucí výměnní studenti by si to měli povinně zkouknout. 1.

Interesting comments that are common for many exchange students. Having received four exchange high school students and being part of the AFS organization receiving many students for the Quebec City region, I have a good idea of the challenges they all face. My first suggestion for anyone wanting to do this is to choose a good organization. To me a good organization is one that takes care of its students first. This requires that the students have opportunities to express themselves to a counsellor and in settings with other counsellors and fellow exchange students. This is critical for their mental health and so that they get to understand the differences between their culture and the local culture. This can be a difficult transition; in particular, as Anna so clearly stated, we all have preconceived notions about other areas of the world. I would also tell them not to worry too much about their level of language in their host country. I knew students that arrived with no French (Quebec City is in French Canada) and could carry on a conversation by Christmas and were very competent when they left after nine months. I think most enjoyed the experience, even those who faced more obstacles than others; such as changing families and schools. It is a learning experience and, while they don't always make numerous local friends, most of their fellow exchange students become friends for life. In general they also become great travellers as they know they can adapt to a different culture and language.

Hi, another great video 👍. I spent a year at a US university as an exchange student, I was a mature student but some of the things she said still ring true for me. The ignorance of geopolitics, history, geography and current affairs in some of the students was very jarring for me. Overall though my biggest takeaway was the kindness and generosity of the people. I’m British so there was a sense of acceptance right from the start but I can understand how difficult it might have been for her to fit in and make friends. The US belief about being the best country in the world was quite prevalent but as a Brit I’m sure we had the same attitude, probably worse, historically. I remember watching an Aaron Sorkin TV series called the Newsroom. The opening scene is in a University auditorium with a moderated discussion between two politicians, one democratic and one republican, and a news anchor. The news anchor, Will McAvoy, is the main character in the series and reluctantly responds to a question from the audience ‘Why is America the greatest country in the world’. His response is well worth watching and is scathing initially and heartfelt in the end.

This is so great. I remember, back after the Wall fell and I rushed to Czechoslovakia (bc that's what it was still called back then) to teach English, Czechs had such Massive delusions about the West, in general and North America, in particular....money grew on trees, everyone lived the life and justice for all...or however you'd like to describe Eutopia. And God help you if you even suggested that things aren't quite as people imagined. They'd get awfully angry and referr to something they saw in a Hollywood movie or to what a friend of a friend who has an aunt in America said. And they were convinced that this Eutopia would come to them as well. Finally (!), they're realizing that things are different.

Every country has it’s own beauty and it’s more shadowy sides. There is nothing like “the best country in the world”. I understand the experience you had, because I went through it as well. I wanted to get out of Czechia so bad after high school. I went to study in Denmark - the happiest country in the world, where everything is green, eco, vegan and cozy and where the friendliest, happiest and the most beautiful people live. Yes I had my expectations very, VERY high after all this marketing. Obviously it wasn’t that shiny, I was lonely, depressed, not accepted by locals, I couldn’t enter some places just because of my “eastern-european” origin. I was bored, got fat, started drinking a little too much and overall I wasn’t happy. I’m not saying that Denmark is horrible, it’s an amazing country and I also had many good experiences there, but the danish lifestyle just doesn’t fit me. However, I begun to realize that Czechia isn’t so bad afterall. It has it’s many downsides, yes, corruption, horrible politicians, many rude and greedy people. But It should be us, the young generation who makes it a better place. So let’s learn, let’s travel, let’s get experiences abroad, make friends all over the world, connect, engage, volunteer, work. Let’s make Czechia a better place so that young people won’t have to go abroad to start loving their own country. Thank you, Anna, for the interview and wish you good luck and happiness in life ! Btw, eventhough your fashion looks quite normal to me, there is nothing like being overly dressed. Nothing wrong with people dressing nicely imho.

Oh wow. Well, I said under the last video that our experiences were very similar... now I need to amend that. I was so lucky, it seems, because I really got along with the kids in the school. Well, not all of them, I just found my own group and they were great. I feel like the most limiting factor was that my host family lived out in the country so I couldn't really meet them on my own, and just as Anna said, it was impossible to be independent as an exchange student. But overall, I feel like the kids in both of my schools were really nice. But then, I was (and still am) the kind to not wear makeup and not dress up. Funny thing though, pretty much everyone around me wore very thick makeup (my classmates included). America is the country where I learned how to wear makeup. Well. :D Also one thing... I've traveled a lot across the Czech Republic as well. I've studied in a lot of places, lived in even more places, worked in quite a few as well. It is quite common to smoke weed here. Very, very common in fact. I was offered some when I was back in high school, and since then, I saw this kind of people regularly everywhere I went. So I very much disagree with the statement that it's not common to smoke weed here. You just, I dunno... have to really get out, to watch people and, well... to smell it. Ugh. Not proud of it, really. The final message though, I completely agree with. I spent a year in the US, I also spent a year in Japan, a few weeks in England and Scotland, and so on... and the more I travel, the more I realize how much I love my country. There is beauty to every country out there, and people are right to be proud of belonging there, but there is no place like home. :)

I really enjoyed both parts of the interview but it told me more about the young Czech lady rather that about high schools in California. I'm sorry to say that but Anna would had similar problems even when studying for a year at high school in Bruntal (sorry Bruntal). It seems that she had very high expectations (she was probably studying a selective school in Prague at that time) which was not fulfilled (but it was probably a good life lesson for her). However, I had one moment in the interview I didn't like at al. When Anna called the 13 years old schoolmate stupid because she thought that travelling to "Wisconsin, Utah and Washington" means she travelled a lot....come on....if a 13 years old Czech girl would travel with her parents to France, Denmark and Latvia she would call herself "a traveler" even though all her travelling would had been with Europe.

I so agree with Anna on almost every level. I experienced the same feeling of pride to be a part of America in the beginning. Over time, as I lived and learned, I found that it's not all peaches and honey. Especially the last four years eroded my pride to be an American so much, that I would rather live almost anywhere else than here. But after 22 years my roots are too deep and I'm too old to start from scratch in a different country. And that includes Czechia as well. After such a long time, it's pretty much a foreign country to me.
@terezafrankova39434 жыл бұрын
Well, I spent 4 months in the UK and only 3 weeks in the US because of Covid. Since we got a couple of American students at my Uni here in Prague, I kinda knew what I was going into and the differences are staggering. The biggest problem I had in the states was the constant nagging in my mind and controling myself. We tend to be really open and make fun of everything which I could not do in the USA. So this is what I think is the most limiting factor. Not being able to be yourself and always have to pretend you are someone else, not making jokes in case someone gets offended and stuff. But otherwise people were really nice and educated since I spent my time at Princeton Uni. So I can say that my stay was really different from Anna's. It actually helped me to understand the american mentality better and not to judge too quickly, which I always try to avoid. Cons of the US from the european point of view: you basically cannot be yourself and always have to think about what you're gonna say or do, when you ask someone for help the chances are 70% will ignore you Pros of the US from the european point of view: people are nice and friendly and give you personal space, they do not make assumptions about you and are willing to share their experiences and help you to understand their mentality

It’s been 17 years since I left CZ and I am starting to feel like Czech is not my home anymore and that coming back now would be even harder that leaving in the first place.

A question for you, Jen. What it like for you to do these interviews with Czechs talking about your home country, when quite often they're quite critical? Do you think it shows actual problems with the US or is more about Czechs being kind of close-minded and not willing to accept something different? And is it hard for you to listen to it? And on top of that, not start defending your country?
@DreamPrague4 жыл бұрын
Great question, Domihork! To be honest, I got more defensive when Michal Sopor was criticizing LA than when Anna was criticizing her high school. Probably because I feel more empathy for a young woman in a foreign country in an American high school, which can be a rough experience! But no, I never think they are close-minded. I'm fascinated by their real stories! I always want them to tell me how they really feel, because I say how I really feel about Czechs every week! There's plenty of room for all our opinions. :)

@@DreamPrague Hey Jen, my parents ran away in 84 and I grew up from 88 to 2011 in the US in the Seattle area. I've been living in Brno for almost a decade now; which is nuts how time flies. Anyway there are many pros and cons of both countries. The fact that the US has a constitution that protects your rights and you as a being is truly amazing and no other country even comes close to that. It's also great that since it's such a huge market, you can find deals on everything. Here? you make 3x less and pay 2x or 3x times more for the same product. And I REALLY miss WA states nature, and the landscape of the US in general, I could go on about that particular aspect. But... that's where it kinda ends for me. I completely feel what Anna is saying about the sort of "Fake" attitude and the general feeling that the population is stupid :D I had some great friends and times in high-school but in general I felt a bit out of place and I didn't really have a relationship until I moved here. I feel that Czech republic is an awesome place in terms of people are open to new ideas but understand that many conservative things are important too, just a nice balance. Still think there's too much government here though, cant do that with my car, you have to go to this and this and this office to do that :D I really laughed when you did the administrators impression behind the window, .... I think that every complaining Czech with low self-esteem (and that's roughly 98% of the nation) should experience some kind of stay in a foreign country, although not necessarily the USA. Já si to ještě neodpustím, musím k těm všem komentářům říct ještě něco :) Ta debata mi totiž připomněla ještě jeden film, a to sice Pravou Blondýnku. No, Elle je ke všem milá, všem pomáhá. No a teď si položte otázku.

As a +- same aged (as Anička) guy from Prague with learned „American English“ through online games and Swedish friends, it's interesting to see a different perspective. Most of my highschool classmates totally loved everything American, I was one of them for a long time until I've talked to a few disappointed friends that actually visited the country. From that time I started my own investigation to get a perspective of the country I live in. Technically that's how I found your channel. :) I think the life in the US is exactly as in the modern american Netflix (not Hollywood) TV series like the fantastic show „Sex education“ which is not actually much about the topic but more about the teenage life in the US. By the way, I've acted the same way about religious stuff before, I hate fake stuff, fake help from so called heaven and manipulation... until I've found these things to be true myself (or let's say that God led me) - I have a testimony in Czech about that on my channel if someone is curious but I'm not a KZbinr by any means so please be respectful... 😂

I was wearing some military trousers with big pockets at school, it's not really better than tracksuit, I would not wear it now to some civilisation, maybe to workshop or to forest it's good. :-D Fashions are arriving and leaving, but classic blue jeans are eternal. :-D I would say she has little distorted imagination of our schools, she was probably on some better school. We have also groups, people who are sitting alone in dining room and nobody is kind to them. But there is mostly more of such people, so they can make their own group of weird people so it works somehow. Also you can't mostly choose where you want to sit in class room, you have even different sitting system in different classrooms and with different teachears so there is probably noone in class you don't know who is that and you don't talk with him. Hi! I think it's different in a very small town as opposed to a big one. And her experience in a performing arts school is probably unique to a California school. But her experience is very much like mine, in a much bigger city!

I think it really depends on the people you meet :) You can have a blast in a tiny city somewhere in Idaho and be unhappy in New York City. And other way round :)

Well, I don´t know how does it look these days, it may have changed over the years, but approx. 20% of Americans have passports. As soon as you know this, you will stop wondering why many of them do not know much about the outside world.. If they do not want to, they do not have to travel.. They have the mountains, two oceans..
@schauza4 жыл бұрын
Canada also has oceans and mountains and only approx. 3 million people have passports, yet we do know more about the world. It has to do with the education systems.

@@michalstehnij5073 Good point. Nevertheless, there's a reason why European kids can come to a North American (particularly American) school and comfortably skip a couple of grades...their general knowledge is much better. And given the global economy, North America can't remain isolated and expect to prosper as it did in the past. But, I digress...thank you for the chat 😊

It is the same in Czechia, most people only travel to a beach resort in Greece, Turkey or Egypt and absolutely ignore the history and culture of the local people. They just go to the local beach and sip Czech beer and eat food they brought from Czechia. So what is the difference_ The same stupidity everywhere in the world.
@slouberiee3 жыл бұрын
@@romanryunin487 More educated people tend to try to learn about the local culture of their travel destination. If you have UNI graduates from Czechia, they usually are more open-minded to other cultures. I think it applies to US people as well (or at least I hope).

This whole setup of living with families is so strange to me. At least in a dorm if you don't like your roommate you're up against someone with equal status. But I guess high schools don't have dorms in the US, right?
@DreamPrague3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, exactly, I think we'd consider high schools too young to live in dorms unless it was a specific boarding school. I suppose the family is supposed to be helpful, but unfortunately., sometimes not.
@rczv3 жыл бұрын
@@DreamPrague I don't know about ČR, but in Hungary it is pretty normal for high schools to have dorms for students who live further off. Usually the majority are local living at home plus a few who live in the dorm and see their families during the weekend. I guess it has to do with the fact that you can choose your high school and better schools attract kids who live far. From my experience, it's not a big deal, I first went to live in a dorm at age 12.

I am sorry for the critical comment: but is this girl a typical Czech teenager? To me she looks like a little Miss Perfect... maybe just a little too full of herself and also quite judgemental about all other people? Her body language, attire, make up, opinions on herself: to me she looks like somebody who is 40 years old, playing a teenager. I think it is good for her she left her social bubble and saw that there is a bit different world away from it...hope she has learned some little lessons about herself as well and maybe somebody in the US found meeting this girl enriching his life... What is wrong with Americans feeling cool about traveling in the US for example? It is great to know your own country and given the size of the country and the differences between different states these can be quite amazing trips. There is no such beautiful city as Prague of course, but it does not make us better and the USA worse, does it? And also other examples...most of it sounded just like cliches. Sorry again for being so critical to that girl- I wish her good luck in her life anyway she is... but really I found the interview quite dull.

What does it mean to be a typical Czech teenager? :) Aren't you the judgmental one if you're judging me when you actually don't know me? Hahah, funny. Also, what exactly is wrong with my make-up? Is my make-up or attire causing you a harm in some way? :)
@majenazprahy99094 жыл бұрын
@Anna Horáková Hi Anna, not really sure what a typical teenager looks like, luckily there will be many different types of personalities among them...I just do not like your make up and attire- just look very artificial to me- but that does not need to bother you. I can have my opinion on it, and you can wear whatever you like. And yes, I am judging you on watching about 40 minutes of you talking. And as I said: I hope you also learned some lessons about yourselves, not only about how fake the people you meet are. I am sorry you did not make a good experience and did not meet one American person you would get on with- that is how your experience really sounded. Good luck in your life.
@annahorakova21384 жыл бұрын
@@majenazprahy9909 Yes, luckily there are many different types of personalities, you said that perfectly :) Of course you can have your opinion :) That's your right. It's just so funny, I would never comment on someone else's looks when actually their appearance is really not the point of the video. I can't imagine watching a video about politics for instance and commenting OH, BUT THE WOMAN IN THE VIDEO HAS SUCH A BAD STYLE, SHE IS WEARING GLASSES INSTEAD OF CONTACTS AND HER HAIR IS GREASY.. :) I would probably think OH, HER LOOKS ARE PROBABLY NOT THE PRIORITY FOR HER BUT THAT'S FINE BECAUSE IT'S HER LIFE :) But people are different:) And people like to judge. :) I really recommend you watch the movie I mentioned below :)

@@annahorakova2138 not sure if it not relevant for the topic of the video. The part of the topic was on not getting accepted by the people in a different environment. And I just had an idea that it maybe a bit difficult to become friends with a little miss perfect showing her superiority to others (guess unconsciously) that I saw in you...but that may be just my opinion and one part of the whole situation that I of course know very little about. Just was imagining the situation the other way round: watching an American teenager giving her opinion on my country and that would be the point I would have made... Thanks for your advise on what to watch but prefer my direct experience to any movies and made up "correct" opinions (however smart). Maybe I am just a different generation and am perfectly fine with it :)

@@majenazprahy9909 Dressing up for school is actually very common in the Czech Republic. And yes, this is actually how many teenagers dress, not only in Prague, but pretty much everywhere in Czechia. I personally (and all of my classmates too) wouldnt wear anything less than jeans and t-shirt to school, commonly I would wear a shirt (sometimes even with a tie), nice pants, sweatshirt, coat. Never sweatpants. Having anything on your head was forbidden in the classroom and teachers would ask you to put it out. Same goes for bubble gums. I come from a small town in Moravia, normal middle-class family and went to a pretty normal highschool. There is seriously NOTHING wrong with dressing nicely and its sad that some people think otherwise.
