We were refugees in our own land. My family was a victim of 1983 riots. Our house was looted and burnt down in Mount Lavinia where myself and my 4 siblings were born and raised. We hid ourselves in a singhalese neighbour's house until we got rescued by the police and taken to a camp. On the way to the camp, I witnessed looting and burning many tamils properties. After spending a week at St Peters College Camp, we left for Jaffna by an Indian ship.

It was indeed a terrible thing that happened but this report doesn't get the facts right. It was most certainly started by thugs of a couple of key people from inside the UNP govt but seemingly without the knowledge of the president. However, the UNP govt should have been held responsible. People were provoked and in mob violence people lose their humanity- it was looting thugs mostly. My father risks his life to protect people in the middle of riots and I am proud of him. Most Sinhala people completely rejected violence against innocent Tamil fellow citizens. This was a provocation and a bait to fuel an ethnic war. Tamil Tigers and their separatist war didn't start due to this Black July event - it was not a 26 year old war but a 33 year old war. Tamil Tigers started terrorism in 1976, not 1983. Further, the death toll has been highly exaggerated to sensationalise - it was reported to be max 1600 - even one is wrong. Most people in SL are peaceful people (Sinhala, Tamil and other) who respect life. It is dirty politics that have abused people to create racial violence. Remembrance is a good thing when it is done with good intentions - to promote peace. While we remember the innocent Tamil victims, we should also admire those who risked their lives to protect others, and also the patience of the majority Sinhala people who did not get provoked into racial riots for the next 26 years even though the Tamil Tiger terrorists were launching attacks on a daily basis, killing about 100,000 people. Even mounting barbaric attacks on innocent civilians and children such as the massacres of Sinhala and Muslim villages in the North and the East and also the brazen daytime attack at one of the most sacred Buddhist shrines in Anuradhapura where pilgrims were gunned down and even filmed by the LTTE. However, the entire West has been duped with false reports like this to justify separatism. Sri Lankans must do everything to protect inter-racial peace and harmony that they have maintained over a long history and recent decades.
