Commissioned in 1988, Abhay Sapru volunteered for the elite Special Forces. During his decade-long stint with the Indian Army, he served in areas like Sri Lanka, Kashmir, and the North-East of India. He currently works for a private bank and alongside, is an established author, having written two novels about his combat experiences.
In this episode and my interaction with Major Abhay Sapru, we spoke about the situation in Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu, what had really happened, and what it takes to be a part of the Special Forces. I am so sorry to say Ranveer. This show was completely one sided. He failed to say what attrocoties the IPKF did to the local Jaffnas. Poor them they initially welcomed the Indian army with garlands and food. But IPKF did worse things than the Sri Lankan army did to the Jaffna locals. And that's why LTTE turned against the Indian army.

@@faizalmemon1947 i think it would’ve been ruff especially pre war on terror 90s U.S. military they were one of those insurgent groups that focused so much on training their cadres (even their child soldiers) were more akin to qualified soldiers than a rag tag militia, with a flexible chain of command fighting in their home terf in a friendly country where you couldn’t use heavy weapons because of possible civilian casualties I think we would’ve lost a lot of guys sort of like a longer version of Lebanon. Probably better than the Indians because the INC had kept army command divided and double game with RAW which gave the ltte a intimate knowledge of the Indian army. My father served in IPKF (Assam Regiment). He called it the most dangerous engagement he ever had. Compared to Northeast and J&K where the police and administration is under the govt. Sri Lanka was the Wild West and the LTTE was really good at Counter Intelligence and many a times they became sitting ducks. My father said LTTE had the guts they didn't give a damn if we were Indian Army. Some still call it "India's Vietnam".

Never forget at its height the IPKF had a 100 000 strong soldiers all from North Indian states like Punjab, UP, Haryana, Rajasthan (South Indian companies like the Madras regiment were forced by Sri Lankan government to go back to India as they did not want South Indians who might speak tamil speaking with Sri Lankan Tamils) stationed in Northern Sri Lanka. These 100 000 soldiers consistently lost and were beaten back and humiliated by less than 10 000 strong sri lankan tamil rebel groups. it was an international shame for India's military at the time, foreign press reported it as India's Vietnam despite have over 10x the soldiers +huge supply lines running from India and from Sri lankan government in south the IPKF did nothing but attack and harass Sri lankan tamil civilians which lead to rebel groups kicking them out of areas. This failure and humiliation to IPKF lead to huge reform in India's military resulting in the much stronger and competent and respected force we have today. Jai Hind! and big respect to Sri Lankan Tamils for not only fighting Indian forces but also larger Sri Lankan military forces for many years all alone.

People in India always point out that the LTTE killed former Indian PM....but they shud also understand that the sam Rajiv Gandhi ordered assassination of Prabhakaran many times. Famously he one time ordered to kill Prabhakaran while he came for a meeting with the Indian Army but the Indian counterpart rejected the PM's proposal. The moment you ordered to murder someone, the other person has the same right to kill you. Only issue was during the assassination so many innocent civilians were killed. This same Rajiv Gandhi famously said "it is normal that the earth shakes when a huge banyan tree falls" to the killing of Sikhs in Delhi to avenge the assassination of Indira Gandhi. I was 8 when iPkf came. We had to sleep in temple night time to e be safe. But one night 2 Indian soldiers with turban armed and drunk came in temple trying to touch a girl but as she and people around challenged they opened fire on her chest and walked away from the area while she was bleeding 🩸 Thank god she survived and now living in Canada 🇨🇦 It happened in Jaffna Annaicoddai Vinayagar temple. I was there at that horror time of my life. Thousand of them got raped and killed horribly. I am not talking about any LTTE or any other groups. Those were innocent civilians. ...they were put into the road and Armour's vehicle was driven on them..in Kokuvil and other places. It's a lifetime wound for our generation. Unforgettable... nightmares. Indian army killed so many doctors and nurses at the Jaffna main hospital. And more and more innocent people are killed. We already know about the Sinhala army but we did not expect from Peacekeeping Army from India supposed to be a good one to do horrible acts while it was there. Our generation experienced it. Horrible things to the civilians..unacceptable

There were also other Tamil militant groups like the EPRLF and TELO who collaborated with the Indian army and did these crimes. They were labeled as traitors and LTTE launched attacks and killed their leaders

I’m Sinhalese and I was born towards the end of the war (2003), the first school I went to had many Tamil kids and Tamil teachers as well as Sinhalese. I didn’t notice a thing, there was no racism or anything, maybe I was too young but I didn’t sense that at all given that the war had just ended, I even learnt Tamil in that school (I can’t speak it at all lol). Even today I have Tamil, Muslim and Sinhalese friends. I just hope that we respect each other and not fall into a useless war again. Love to all❤✌🏾🇱🇰

This war is what you get when the hatred in some individuals is left unchecked and is allowed to grow,foster and consume other individuals.. Many were teachers, lawyers, high ranking civil servants etc. A well educated minority is sure to inccur the wrath of the majority who not only spoke a different language but had a different faith. Never forget at its height the IPKF had a 100 000 strong soldiers all from North Indian states like Punjab, UP, Haryana, Rajasthan (South Indian companies like the Madras regiment were forced by Sri Lankan government to go back to India as they did not want South Indians who might speak tamil speaking with Sri Lankan Tamils) stationed in Northern Sri Lanka. These 100 000 soldiers consistently lost and were beaten back and humiliated by less than 10 000 strong sri lankan tamil rebel groups. it was an international shame for India's military at the time, foreign press reported it as India's Vietnam despite have over 10x the soldiers +huge supply lines running from India and from Sri lankan government in south the IPKF did nothing but attack and harass Sri lankan tamil civilians which lead to rebel groups kicking them out of areas. This failure and humiliation to IPKF lead to huge reform in India's military resulting in the much stronger and competent and respected force we have today.
