If you’re a caretaker who really takes gift giving seriously, you may be wondering what are dementia friendly gift ideas that my person would love? Well, today Debra has some answers ready for you. When it comes to dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, it may be easier to think of a list of bad ideas than it is to think of a list of good ones. Even if your person has a history in a skilled trade or has been an outdoorsman, and you’re looking to spark fond memories, things like drills, knives, or other dangerous tools and objects may simply be too challenging for them to handle safely. Keeping your person’s capabilities in mind is crucial in finding a gift that they’ll enjoy. When it comes to what exactly that gift should be, we advise trying to find something that will engage or entertain, make life easier, provide comfort, or taste good! Some examples could be a photo album, a jewelry box, a clock with both the time and date, an indoor garden kit, and who wouldn’t love a box of jewelry? All this to say, the best way to know what gift to get is to know who you’re getting it for. The better you understand your person, their abilities, and their interests, the better gift you’ll be able to get them. And a good gift can make all the difference over the holiday season. For more tips about navigating the holidays while accounting for a loved one with dementia, check out this video, where we go into more detail on the topic.
