So my first rambling video where I discuss a small bit about what exactly Irish martial arts are. This is a huge topic and one I could not cover in one video so if you want to learn more on this topic let me know.

Hi Nathan. Just for the record “bataireacht” simply means “stick-fighting” of any kind anywhere in the world. I introduced it as a word because people were just calling Irish stick-fighting “bata” or “Irish stick” which didn’t really make much sense, but it was because they were trying to avoid using the word shillelagh. So if you translated it they were saying “I do the stick style of Irish stick-fighting”, and I would say “Well bataireacht actually means stick-fighting” so it was an attempt at an improvement on my part. If you really read about the Gaelic Irish peasantry you’ll find that they were actually considered highly educated and literate for peasants. “The Hidden Ireland” is a good start for that as is “The Hedge Schools of Ireland”. Irish stick-fighting really was not a peasant art per se as we know that the biggest faction feud in history was the Caravat - Shanavests War which pitted poor Irish laborers against sting farmers and middlemen who scholars consider quite wealthy. Both groups were native Irish speakers and Catholic. I know you won’t believe me but just read up on it - it’s historians saying this not me. In time, as you study the broadsword manuals, I think you’ll begin to see how a number of Irish stick-fighting “styles” were based on that. I know Antrim Bata is not based on that but that’s not what I’m talking about. A number of contemporary descriptions say that the Shillelagh Exercise is just a slightly altered form of the Broadsword Exercise. And there is some broadsword in the Doyle style as I’ve discussed with Glen before. Anyway it’s great to see you doing this, best of luck with it.

Thank you John a lot of detailed information for me to look into there. Yes of course with this short video there is a lot of material left out or not included but I will do my best with future videos to dive into these areas.

@@ramblingkern What part of Ireland you based? I very well might take you up on that offer at some stage at the moment I’m ploughing through videos and searching for books and info on it. I did martial arts for 10 years (never in Eire) and I had never heard of it till this week I’m a bit embarrassed by the fact tbh. Go raibh míle maith agat 🙏🏻

@@stevenolove most people have not and as a result what I do is often met with a lot of hostility when I talk about it as a result a big part of what I do is get the word out there. Ruadhan McFadden has a great book on collar and elbow and John Hurley has some good books on the history of bata I would also highly recommend Ben miller's book. As for me I am based in Dublin so feel free to get in touch any time mate.

There is an Antrim Bata study group in Gronigen if you're interested. I'm not sure how active they are at the moment though. I've been looking to learn for a few years now, but alas I'm too far away from that group.

Excellent video. I've studied both the Doyle and Antrim styles and love them both. They each have their strengths and applications. But what's most attractive to them is their simplicity in application. It's basically "hit the guy and move on to the next guy" with as much efficiency as possible. I would REALLY be interested in knowing if there are still practitioners of other stick arts in Ireland that have yet to be made public.

Brilliant who did you study with? There could well be but having discussed this with someone recently is that often people don't view it as an art or a martial art usually just as something someone once showed me. Hopefully more will show up but who knows.

@@ramblingkern I studied the Antrim system under Danny Hoskins, a student of Maxime Chouinard's. He had a video course that walked through the basics of the style in a very simple, well-taught manner. He was beginning another course which was intended to be more in-depth, but that was just before everything hit the fan in 2020. I studied the Doyle system under Glenn Doyle himself in an in-person seminar in 2018 and with Jerard Delaney, a student of his who teaches about two hours from me (I live in Michigan, U.S.). Glenn also did a video course, which I took up as well. I still practice nearly every day. As a guy who's not that far from 50, but still in decent condition, I'm finding that a good stick-fighting system is a very capable equalizer for somebody like me who, although I study martial arts, am not nearly the fastest or quickest at it. A walking stick is legal pretty much any place in the world, and the techniques have excellent application for modern self-defense situations. And you'd better believe that, God willing and the world gets much closer to normal, if and when any seminars for Irish stick come up, I'll jump at the chance to partake of them!
