I mean, even in more social societies it still helps. Obviously the Northern Europeans take it to the extreme. As someone who comes from the US, there is definitely a capability to socialize without alcohol, but the downside is that much of that talking is just small talk for the sake of making noise. Like it's interesting (and unhealthy in its own way) seeing how horribly uncomfortable people can get here if everyone just sits there in silence, yet people in a country like Finland will just huddle around a fire to drink and merely enjoy each other's physical company / presence.

I was born in Minnesota so there was a fairly high number of Norwegian Americans there. They can seem cold, distant, quiet and reserved so I’ve heard people complain about their “lack of friendliness”. There’s a positive flip side to this stereotype though, once they gauge you as trustworthy and that you can mind your own business, they would give you the shirt off their backs. People do drink lots coffee though, I meet up with Norwegian friends over coffee/tea and cakes(home baked of course).... I don't feel people need alcohol to speak to. Maybe to have small talks with a complete stranger, perhaps it is not their thing, but if you are in work place, your friends circle, or you are in a hobby club, society, etc you just talk with people like anywhere else. Norwegians are very easy going, friendly and fun. They are easier to get along with than the Swedes and Danes in my opinion, perhaps because they have less population, and the oil money make their society less competitive, everyone is just chill and at peace.

Why is it so hard for them to join in with the rest of the world's social customs.

Because we have a different and I guess more germanic culture. The germanic culture is more direct and a bit less polite than the english/british. So it's like, you want something from someone, ask them, want to complain complain, want to... whatever, just do it. We go a bit more straight to the point. This also includes that we can be straightforward about strangers not being friends. To us it's like self-evident, the person is not a friend so why should we see it as a friend then? Henceforth we often don't see the need to be particularly nice to such a stranger either. In short, maybe it takes a bit more for germanic ppl to see someone as a friend than it does for people in anglo countries. But we also don't have such a compulsion to always be nice and polite either, which can in fact be a good thing. It makes for more effective communication and getting more thngs done quicker.

Hi, I would put the Norwegians in a different group. Rather they seem to me to be proto-Slavs. The addiction to alcohol ( stamped on by the state through necessity in the 30s) and their coldness seems to put them into the bracket of Poles, Finns, and Eastern Europeans. Perhaps the lack of trust in the stranger is due to a vicious past I dont know. But it puts them at a disadvantage. 'Do as you want to be done by' has a lot to be said for it..benefitting both parties if accepted in an unspoken manner. The Pole who walked out of the lift first, infront of me, then pushed open the heavy glass door (for him alone to walk out of the building) allowing it to slam shut infront of me had not yet made the connection with "do as you would be done for benefitting everyone." The lady who could not bring herself to say good morning to me might conceivably have been the beneficiary of my good advice had she spoken. "The road down there is closed better to go that way.." Or Maybe "There are some drunken yobs down there, take care." But dumb coldness wouldnt make me pass on such information for fear of rebuke..

@@andyharpist2938 i get your point. Forgive me, I think it is such a pity on us if we cannot show to our fellow human being simple cordiality, even to stranger. Here is my theory about the "coldness" of Norwegians and Nordics in general: The latitude that Norwegians reside in was not really meant for human habitation. In a slow process of millenia of adaptation and selection the forefathers of todays Norwegians slowly became genetically adjusted to the environment. This adaptation benefitted traits that would be crucial for survival in a cold climate (essentially: delayed gratification traits like high conscientiousness), at the same time it decreased in the populations genetic pool tendencies like openness, cheerfulness, extroversion that are more beneficial for immediate gratification and can only be afforded by people, who live in more habitable spaces.
