What are Red Daleks?

The rank of Red Dalek is a fairly well-documented rank in the Dalek hierarchy, initially having significant power and influence in early Dalek history before seemingly disappearing until the Time War broke out. What is the in-universe history of the rank of Red Dalek?

You gotta wonder, if a standard Dalek just found a way to paint itself, could it trick other Daleks into thinking it's a higher rank? (At least for a little while?)

I mean the higher ranks have different material then normal casing so probably just scan the dalek seeing its fake

Are Dalek casings painted? I figured it was based on whatever metal they used that denoted colour.

Maybe red is just their version of Red Oxide undercoat to prevent rusting 😉 But one then figured how cool they looked and decided to stick with it 😁

Red Daleks are super cool and it’s a real shame that they weren’t in the Classic series but did appear in the Peter Cushing Dalek Movies despite not been cannon to the series itself. However I would like to see a new type of the Red Dalek for the new RTD era. 🙂

Did you know in early plans for Remembrance of the Daleks the Imperial Daleks were supposed to be Red Daleks whilst the Renegades were going to be blue. That would have changed the hierarchy of what different colours meant. No long a rank but a different faction.

Of the various Dalek colors, red is my least favorite design, though I can’t really say why. As an aside, having various ranks literally be called “[color] Dalek“ always felt lazy to me, compared to actual titles like strategist, commander, or supreme; it’s like using the prop names in-universe

I hope that the Daleks start to appear in a more militaristic way as they did in classic doctor who like in the story of Rememberance of the Daleks. Hopefully we get to see the Red, Gold & Black colours of daleks & maybe a bit of a change from the bronze daleks that have become a bit over used I feel like adding back colours for ranks would make them stand out more as they have been in use as long as the old grey ones where in classic who.

I have seen a Red Dalek, with Gold Hemispheres. Can't remember where though. Also, I have seen the, original Saucer Commander from Dalek Invasion of Earth B&W serial re coloured. But its Hemispheres remained Pale Blue, but with a hint of opalescence.

If I remember correctly, it was once stated that the lack of red Daleks was due to the Daleks not being able to see red... might be misremembering something though I dunno. In reality I think it was explained away to keep the Amicus films separate from the TV series.

Red Dalek, were always Space Craft Commanders. Cruisers, Battlecruisers, Battleship, Assault Carrier, are all have a Red Dalek as their commanding officer. **** PS. They were the ones you could climb inside at the Seaside amusements.

In the Peter Cushing movies, the Red Dalek appears to take the role of Saucer Commander, but in the TV series, Saucer Commanders are usually depicted as being black and silver. The comics and novels usually depict red Daleks as interim commanders, higher in rank than Drones but still subordinate to Black Daleks and Gold Daleks

@@dalekbumps The reason they weren't Saucer Commanders in the TV series was B&W TV. We had a long clash on Wikipedia some years ago over the TV Saucer Commanders livery.

Look I know the Paradigms kinds of fumbled, but I do wish we didn't through the idea of dalek ranks and colours out entirely. I love the Time War Daleks, they're what I grew up with, but it's just not special when they all look the bloody same.

So Paradigm Drones fill both the section leader function as older red daleks and the more variable rank of black domed Daleks. If the Paradigm had a lower rank that wasn't just the Time War model, I wonder what color it'd be... OR, since the Paradigm were based on the Movie Daleks, what if instead of Time War models they employed the Movie model. But would they go with the first or second version? The second has solar panels, but with the Dalek Prime Strategist we know solar panels can be redundant, and the Paradigm, or at least how I interpreted it, combine the solar panels with the shoulder/arm slats.

I dont think it was ever thought the dalek masterplan supreme was supposed to be red was it? If its just a misunderstanding due to the cover art from mutation of time by john peel, that Dalek is supposed to be the time squad leader who pursues the tardis through time and space for the terranium. Its made very clear in the book that its subordinate to the black supreme.

In-universe, no the Daleks' Master Plan Supreme is a Black Dalek, I just included that bit as a reference to the Mutation of Time cover art

@@dalekbumps but that cover art never implies that the dalek supreme in DMP is red. Its an entirely different dalek the one who goes to egypt etc which ironically was a standard silver in the televised version.

@@Solidsnakeprime501 no worries, I'll have to do a video on that at some point because I always thought that the cover artist assumed that the Black Dalek from The Daleks' Master Plan was a Red Dalek, easy mistake to make since the serial is in black-and-white. It's interesting that they added another subordinate Dalek rank to the story in the novel, as the same thing happens in the novelisation of Day of the Daleks, apparently a Black Dalek acts as a subordinate to the Gold Dalek
