My only experience with smelling salts was when I was a kid, in the early 1970s. My father was one of the dozens of ushers in our synagogue for the fast day of Yom Kippur. Since no food or drink (even water) was allowed for a 25 hour period, they each carried a few packets of smelling salts in case someone passed out. AFAIK, he never actually had to use them.

I had a lot of blood drawn for testing at 16 years old. At one point the nurse and I were talking basketball and the next thing I know she's patting my cheek and i smelled the worst thing ever
