I support a company like DIYDetail pushing home the thought that paint doesn't have to be perfectly scratch free to coat or to look terrific. The detailing world is dominated by OCD detailers, I think many get into the business due to their OCD so I want to be careful with my words but their standards being applied as THE standards can be harmful to the auto community because they're not realistic for DIYers. Someone wanting to polish their car is going to be faced with dozens of different pads of different thicknesses, different firmness, different patterns and textures, then they have to pick from a dozen different compounds/polishes just from one company, it's too much! My father who used to do the 8" orbital Simoniz machines with a liquid cleaner wax in the 90s, he never touched the new DAs, the choices were all too much for him. A DIYer should have the guidance and support to take one polishing pad choice, one polish, put it on one easy to use DA machine and get that 2/3 correction of swirls, remove the water spots, see a nice shine to put that protection over, and not be told by a car club or detailing group on FB that they're doing it wrong!

I have a black SUV purchased just over three months ago. I’ve been super careful washing and drying but noticed some very light lines in the clear coat tonight. However, I also installed bright LED lighting in my garage, so these lines could have been there from the time I got the car, or perhaps the pressure washer caused them when I pre-rinsed. Either way, it sounds like I have to accept that it won’t be perfect and have fun keeping it looking as nice as possible. Maybe one day I’ll get the confidence to polish it. Until then, I’ll use my ceramic spray wax!

Foaming on dry not only lubricates for the initial pressure rinse it actually cleans better than rinsing first then foaming and rinsing again. Many of us have put that to the test and at least in our tests we find foaming dry is better. Dilution, lubrication, etc.

I want to upgrade drying towel, any suggestions This weekend using rinseless wash and then ceramic spray - both from DIY detail. But I used a box store drying towel that is thick/fluffy as a sheep. It didn’t seem to slide that well. I also drying a large flat surface of the minivan top that loads my towel So what towel do you suggest? How many towels using ceramic gloss and rinseless wash would be used for a minivan? Any suggestions on not loading a towel up with water on top of van? Would using a leaf blower be a dumb idea before using cermaic gloss and towel? Thanks much

For scratches...isn't there a simple way to locally add clear coat (inside a noticeable scratch, not small swirls) and then gently polish any excess^ As opposed to levelling down everything down to the bottom of that scratch? Sounds less detrimental.

What a video! I really didn't know that much about the paint process as I thought. But absolutely correct we're leveling the paint making it flatter so light refracts better off the surface and thus looks appealing. I know that Hawk Pro has many videos on polishing and ways to make you more efficient. You have pad washer to prevent dry polish amongst cleaning, 5,5,5 method. I really enjoyed this video because it happens and always will. And the detailing bug is a great bug to catch, I look forward to more videos in the new year. Thank you Nick and Yvan!

Re lighting, this presentation from a high end detailer is fascinating: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYLSe4SNZZKdg6c Re drying aids, are there any products that if left on the panel, completely evaporate, leaving zero residue? Some panel wipes contain oils that do completely evaporate - yes? A drying aid that contained oils like that, without the cleaning chemicals, would seem to make sense, to minimise residue if one doesn't manage to completely dry an area. Re touchless washes, the main one in my city (Sydney) is the LaserWash, and i do think it is pretty swirl free. (but it doesn't get the car as clean as a tunnel wash, and leaves runs/drips of soapy water which if left to dry, are quite difficult to remove) Re "link above" - sorry, but once again it didn't appear 😃
