What Are Tacet Discords? | Wuthering Waves Lore

The lament, the waveworn phenomena, taced discords, threnodians what do all these terms mean? If youve recently picked up wuthering waves, these terms may have confused you as you rushed through the story. But fear not as the whole point of this video is to answer the question of just what are tacet discords?
So strap yourselves in while I discuss this topic and expand further on wuthering waves lore
Some part of this video comes from the actual lore while others may be speculation on my part as we currently do not know the full story. As such take it with a grain of salt as the point of this video is just a deeper dive into Wuthering Waves lore.

To add to the "Tacet Discords might not be all evil" there is currently I think 3 (technically 4) Tacet discords that canonically are not really aggressive to people. Spoilers to some World quests in the Dim forest and Whining Aix's Mire. 1st is the most non-significant one, if you look at the island where the Tower of Adversity is, there is a smaller island at the bottom, go to that island and walk around and you'll see a Hoartoise with an NPC, talking to this NPC, he informs you that he named the Hoartoise "Slowy", he tells you that doesn't know why Slowy is non-aggressive, but he has known him for a while and considers him a companion, he also warns you that every other Hoartoise on that island is just as aggressive as normal unlike Slowy. And yes, you can stand new Slowy and just chill with him, he won't be aggressive. (Side note, he has a health bar by the way, but its green like other friendly units like the soldiers, but I don't have the heart to actually attempt to attack him to see if I can hit him) 2nd is Hoohoo, from a Dim Forest World Quest, he is a Hoochief who seems to be friends with the researchers, the world quest also shows he understands what humans say, and can respond in kind, like when in the quest, the researchers didn't know where the last bulb was, so he responded by trying to get our attention and running to a direction. We follow him and find the last bulb, but not before we see him fighting his own species to basically protect us and the researchers, even fighting with us. The researchers also trust him enough to consider him a part of the research team, just as important as other people. 3rd and 4th technically are Mourning Aix and their mate, well Mourning Aix before their mate died. The world quest story showed that before, Mourning Aix and their mate were peaceful to the humans in the area and the humans even whistled songs at both of them and they responded back with their own songs. But because of a TD outbreak, their mate was targeted, they managed to save their mate but their mate was heavily injured. The humans noted that it seemed to call out to the humans for help with their mate but they couldn't do anything since they were busy with the TD outbreak. Afterward it tried and tried to resurrect its mate, at the cost of its own health and energy, explaining the name "Mourning Aix", now much more aggressive than before. The last pieces of their mate called out to us to help it convey its final farewell to Mourning Aix, and convince them to move on and live their life without them. This quest really was the biggest sign of "Tacet Discords aren't just evil" as it showed that Mourning Aix and its mate might have been fully sentient, not just the collection of memories from what they eat, showing that they can have alot of emotional depth. Mourning Aix is mourning a lost love one, thats alot more complicated than just repeating eaten memories.

I've been trying to keep track of the worldbuilding, but I also don't want to read the codex entries and notes and such, so I haven't sorted out the types of TDs. That's very interesting. I would guess that TDs aren't considered naturally evil per se, since they can be all kinds of "reverberations." But whether they are inherently evil might be something the story actually intends to discuss within itself. Some of the quests present TDs as potentially helpful (the Dim Forest quest, with Hoohoo), some directly raise the question of coexistence (the extremely poorly translated Tiger's Maw Mine quest), but at the same time I recall the TD hunter quest about the Bell Borne turtle has an NPC say that TDs always bring disaster regardless of their origins. I hope this isn't just contradiction from sloppy writing but rather a point to be elaborated on in the future.

If you haven't already done it. Do the Mourning Aix exploration quest. This quest solidified the fact that TD's are not inherently malicious but capable of very human feelings.

from my understanding, TDs are essentially born from residual chaotic energy. These energies consume organisms in order to take form and mimic their host's behavior and shape (that's why we even have 4-legged traffic lights). This explains why not all TDs are bad since they just "mimic". TDs, however, are not perfect energies like Remnants. In order to maintain their existence, they need to consume other frequencies. This explains why we see random fights in explorations.

Im doing some of the exploration quest and if this is similar to how world quest in genshin work theres probably more context hidden behind those so Id probably have to update these in the future. Personally I think the TD's are just reflections of the frequencies they consume so if theyre surrounded by malice and evil they might just end up that way, otherwise they seem purely instinctual to me and just driven by a need to survive rather than outright evil

They probably arent and are likely a product of the echoes they consume, the more they take in "negative" ones the more likely they are to behave that way but its just a guess at this point

In addition, couldn't an argument be made that Resonators are a type of TD as well? Seeing as how they mutate and all that... So if this line of thinking is correct, the morally grey area of the TD's could be a really cool concept to explore!

Alien made nanobots that work in similar style like gray goo. If normal human tried to attack them in melle range, they would just takeover their human body and consume them. This is why you see all guards in game use some type of guns that either cause elemental damage or sound damage wich causes the nanobots inside a creature to go haywire and consume itself. Resonators in game are more of a anti-body for them and are humans who evolved to counter them. (it probaly was not natural evolution, but human experiments). The gold ones that you find once you defeat them are half damaged or stunned bots. Once sucked in, the machine we use resets their programming.

Tacet seems to mean a section in which a musician doesnt play and thus is silent while discord can mean a lack of harmony between notes. So given the story is themed around sound maybe these creatures have little to no origin (or perhaps a poorly understood one within the context of the lore) referring to the silent part and the discord part refers to their unnatural existence but thats just a random guess 😂

Imo TDs either: 1. initially rise from a realm similar to the collective unconscious (and probably feed on it) of C. G. Jung. 2. The game will take a more spiritual road and it will directly quote Indian spiritualism with the “Akashic Records” (a sort of etheric realm where all memories are contained, like a giant library), which is still very similar to the Collective Unconscious. The fact that the entire game revolves around musical terms enforces my idea, as frequencies are thought to be the fundamental components of all existence in many religions or spiritual ideologies like Buddhism. See also “The Word of God” in Christianism, Judaism, and many others like Gnosticism, where “The Sound” usually represent the very first act of the Divine. See also “The Faust” of Goethe. Would love if you could research these topics and see if there’s an actual explicit connection in-game.

Personally I think the TD's are just reflections or reverberations of the echos they consume, so if a large amount of them consume the echoes of soldiers, a more war like instinct likely develops. Otherwise there are examples of relatively benign TD's which very likely means they are a product of their surrounding. Tbh the sound motif kinda reminded me of lord of the rings which uses the concept of music and songs in their creation lore 😁

Yeah the lore of this is infinitely more confusing than HSR's lore. Because the game throws out what I call, "explosive Jargon Word vomit." Others may have different terms for that, but its what i feel it is. The game has this habit of constantly throwing out confusing and similar terms everywhere left and right, and seeming to expect you to either a) understand what they're talking about, or b) be impresed with the game with how many big made up words they throw at you in an attempt to appear intelligent. The hopes that big made up words automatically equals deep and compelling story. But it honestly took me out of the story quite a bit, as a full act in, and half the terms are still confusing as to what they're referring too. They definitely need a new story board director. Either way, thanks for this guide here. Id actually call this video almost a requirement for this game, if you're not planning to skip the cutscenes 😅

Don't know why the comparison was necessary. I played a bit of HSR and I still don't know what a Stellaron is who an Aeon is, what an Architect is or what an Antimatter Legion is supposed to be. Same jargon word vomit issue.

The problem with all gacha games, tho in Aether Gazer they have a glossary of terms, story recap, and worldbuilding of the game so you can read and understand what's happening in that game
