"Caller GMT" without rotating bezel should be called just "Dual time" and the "caller GMT" with rotating bezel as " Dual time with rotating bezel", or "GMT for caller". They all use dual time movement. and the watch with "GMT movement"( movement allows hour hand can be rotated independent to GMT hand) but without bezel rotation as " Dual time for traveler " and the last case watch with "GMT movement" and bezel rotation together should be called "genuine, true, or real GMT" or just "GMT". 1. Dual Time, 2. Dual Time with rotating bezel/GMT for caller, 3. Dual time for traveler, 4. GMT. 4 cases. all cases are from using dual time movement or "GMT movement" and using bezel rotation or not.

Great video! I had never known the distinction between the 2 types of GMT watches. GMT is by far my favorite complication. I have 3 true GMTs looking forward to acquiring a Dual Time Panerai. Thank you for the great content. Watches have really helped me get away during the pandemic. Cheers, Jock

Glad you liked it! I’d often seen them referred to off handedly but never really saw any that broke down the differences and the advantages/disadvantages to both - so soon as I had footage to properly illustrate the 4 main combinations I finally made the video. Which are the 3 GMTs you already have? And which Panerai Dual Time are you thinking of getting? I really wish I bought PAM161 in the video - at the time it was going for a good price but now prices have risen on it in the past 2 years 😔

I have a caller type gmt which I wear if I'm following a sporting event in a different time zone, or if a family member is travelling.. And I have a traveller gmt which I wear if I am travelling.. They are both just as useful, but for different reasons.
@ShahLusso3 жыл бұрын
Very they're both useful for different things and it comes down to what one's individual needs are. The whole "true GMT" nomenclature is somewhat misleading since it sort of implies that caller GMTs are somehow inferior, but the reality is that caller GMTs are just better suited to different purposes. Out of curiosity, which are the GMTs that you have?

*Casio quartz guy here. In many Casio models there’s a function called Time Swap. The Home Time Mode is swapped with the time that you select in World Time Mode at the push of a button or two. Also I see comments in videos that debate the differences in the ‘True GMT’ vs the ‘Caller GMTwhere the date change is a critical issue as well. Again Casio takes care of that issue as well by keeping the dates in both modes accurate as well.* *But this video adds a ton of clarity to this discussion which has become a divisive issue in the mechanical brands. I just watched a video by the Teddy B. dude reviewing a ‘22 Bulova ‘True GMT’, without a rotating bezel and the bezel lacks the 24 hour indexes🤷🏾♂️. I guess I should mention that the dial however has the 24 hour indexes. Lol, I’m still learning and my interest is peaked with this ongoing debate.*

Thanks! Glad you liked the video! Yeah Casios add a whole other dimension with how they approach multiple time zones, and admittedly in this i didn't even cover Worldtimers or things like the Rado Captain Cook Over-Pole which uses just the bezel to show different time zones too...might be due for a followup to this video :)

I never gave caller vs. true GMT much thought until I was connecting thru SLC and realized what a PITA changing a caller GMT is when you are on the move. I have all but sworn off 2893/330 movements for that reason. My grail GMT was a 16570 polar but my Panerai 233 has for now crushed any desire for really anything else. Honorable mention: Glycine Airman Purist: one 24 hour hand and a rotating bezel for second TZ. Alpina Alpiner GMT: modified Sellita for jumping hour hand
@ShahLusso2 жыл бұрын
Same thing happened to me, you really don't notice the difference or any major advantage/disadvantage until you travel and have to change time zones a few times, that being said though as I mentioned it's all about lifestyle & use - for travelling the True GMT is the way to go, if it's just for keeping track of family or business in other time zones then the caller gets the job done well :)

So many cool watches in this segment. I prefer dual time, save the rotating bezel for divers. My top picks, IWC utc and any Ulysee Nardin dual time with the big date. Caller watches? Lear something new all the time. Thanks for the fun content.

Glad you liked it! I'd been meaning to do a segment on this but I wanted to have footage of the 4 main combinations to show the differences between each (and the original footage of the Batman was terrible so I had to spend a lot of time remastering it). Great pick with the IWC UTC for finding a different way to display that 2nd time zone (and also one i forgot to mention, as its neither a 4th hand nor a subdial) also the Ulysse Nardin dual times are really cool, especially the newer 42mm Executive Dual Time looks amazing :D

Oh yes, the PO GMT especially with the black & white ceramic bezel is one I've wanted to film for a loooong time and I'll jump on it as soon as I get the chance. I also agree about the Batman on Jubilee, some people don't like it as much but in my view it's a nice combination & harks back to the older 70s & 80s Rolex GMTs

I'm looking for a watch that has the gmt function on it, as I used travel a lot and don't like relying on my phone to update. One thing that never understood is why they always associated dive watches with gmts. I don't dive, and have no real interest in doing so. Is this a marketing ploy to get more people to buy the watch? I have ran across a brand that is from England that makes watches with a GMT as well as a worldtimer function. I do not know how these fall into the dual time or caller gmt watches that you were talking about. The brand is Christopher Ward and the watch I am talking about is the C65 trident, as well as the worldtimer. They use the Selitta 330- 2 I believe. They also have their own in house movement. I am shopping at this point and have not committed to any one watch brand or model. However I like the size of these, as they are not big and bulky. If get a chance have a look at them. Thanks for the post, very informative!! It really does help a lot!

Great video, Fred. I do like the true GMTs. My favorite would be a Rolex GMT Master (I know, lame pick). The budget choice would be a Mido Ocean Star GMT.
@ShahLusso3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! And I don't blame you for having the GMT Master as a favorite - it did afterall start the segment & it's not a classic for nothing hehe. I do like that Ocean Star GMT - I like how it uses the rehaut to show the 24-hour scale so that it doesn't have to sacrifice the dive bezel functionality. In retrospect, I'd have preferred something like that over my Steinhart which just switches out the insert but didn't make the bezel bidirectional or 24-48 clicks... It kind of feels like they were just cutting corners on that.

I won't say my favorite because that would be the Rolex GMT Master II...but the most practical (for me) is the Grand Seiko and thats because of the illumination of the rotating bezel. When you're on a long haul flight and its dark in the plane it helps to have the hands and bezel illuminate so you can tell all 3 times zones. Those of you who travel intercontinental know what I mean... its just a pain to turn on the overhead light to see your watch and it blinds everyone around you.

The ultimate/perfect GMTs is the Rolex Master II Pepsi, size, bezel, design, usability, luxurious, ... The Sky-Dweller is cool as well. I also love the Explorer II.

Very true, having practically invented the segment Rolex does know how to make some great GMT & Dual Time Watches :D
The Doublematic is nice, but a bit busy for my personal taste, but the JLC Geographics are amazing, and a great hybrid between a traditional dual-time and a worldtimer. I'm also a big fan of the JLC Master Compressor Geographic with its quirky asymmetrically sized dials and the compressor crowns

I've never heard the term a caller GMT. I think you made it up... A duel time tracks a second time zone but on a 12 hour scale. An Explorer ll uses a GMT movement not a duel time movement. I have a 116710LN.
@ShahLusso3 жыл бұрын
I wish I did, since it perfectly illustrates the advantage of the non-true GMT watches, but the term has been around for a while, as well as office GMT which is another term for it (also not mine). Also dual time refers to what’s on display (two time zones vs 3) not the movement. An Explorer II can only show two time zones, despite having the movement of a true GMT. The rotating bezel on your 116710LN allows it to track up to three time zones (I’ll make a video later explaining how) hence it is a proper GMT display with a true GMT movement.
@derekshearer90493 жыл бұрын
@@ShahLusso. I did a lot of research on Greenwich mean time watches and duel time watches. The third time zone is why Rolex calls them GMT Master and not GMT. Duel time watches can also have a rotating bezel but it's in 12 hours not 24...
@ShahLusso3 жыл бұрын
Again - dual (also you might want to check your autocorrect btw as the time zones aren’t engaging in combat or a duel ) refers to the tracking of two time zones regardless of whether that’s via a fixed or rotating bezel with 12 or 24 hour indications. So a Rolex GMT Master II would be a dual time (for the 4th hand) AND a proper GMT by virtue of the rotating 24 hour bezel as per the template set out by the original GMT Master I from 1954 (that reference however lacked the independent jumping hour hand so that in itself ironically isn’t a true GMT by modern standards that Rolex set with the GMT Master II) Also if you look at the Rolex website, they don’t describe the Explorer II (or the Sky Dweller for that matter) as having a GMT function - only a “24 hour display”meanwhile they do on the GMT Master II
@derekshearer90493 жыл бұрын
@@ShahLusso. I prefer duel over duality. More confrontational. GMT 24 hour. Duel time 12 hour. Repeating yourself doesn't make it more true. The Arrow hand is always referred to as the GMT hand... Have a nice weekend...
