I'm often asked what the best screws are for MDF - for things like euro hinges in to cabinet doors, cabinet hinge support screws, screws for drawer runners and screws for general brackets in MDF. This is specifically for screwing in to the face grain of MDF NOT the edge grain - I'll do a separate video about that. So today I'm putting a selection of 8 different screws through their paces to see which does best in MDF.

About test #6 - 4.0x16 vs 3.5x16 - The length of countersunk screws includes the head. Which means that if you increase the diameter, the head size will also increase, leaving less space for overall thread length. If you check them closely the 4.0x16 will have fewer thread windings than 3.5x16.

I used to use the gold screws all the time and swore by them, until I had to screw hinges into a hard wood door frame. They kept snapping, I don’t use an impact driver. When another chippy friend laughed at me and gave me Reisser screws. None snapped in the hard wood. I occasionally use the turbo gold and the silver screws. But for important work now I stick with Reisser. Screwfix tradepoint are all part of the same retail group. At the end of the day we all get what you pay for I guess. Please keep the test and videos coming. Love watching them

Would be cool to see a TestTuesday video where you test various joinery methods for a simple (plywood?) box. I'm trying to build a CNC enclosure box, but the test could be about drawer construction; comparing ugly screwed butt joints, less ugly pocket holes, dowels, and then fancier lap/finger/dovetail joints or whatever - then comparing the boxes for strength against racking with force applied (without a backing board/drawer bottom ofc). More effort than a handful of screws though :p

These test videos have been really interesting. It’d be good to hear how you think real world factors affect these values - eg, the ‘wiggling’ effect of loaded drawers being drawn in and out, because currently it seems like virtually every fixing in everything is way over rated!

There's defo merit in the fixing being solid from square one. If it's slightly loose as you say the wiggle can damage the wood more and more. 👍

I'd like to see a comparison of pilot hole sizes on a standard screw shaft.. is it better to leave more "meat" to cut into, or allow the shank free passage through the wood leaving the threads to cut into fresh material. Great video as usual, although I'd like to see a re-test of that anomalous TurboGold 4x16. It was the amount of material that screw pulled out with it that inspired my pilot hole thoughts.. did the thicker screw actually damage too many fibres going in?
@GosforthHandyman
@GosforthHandyman 5 жыл бұрын
Pilot hole - on the list. I think the Turbogold 4x16 was just down to the bigger head meaning less of the actual screw thread made it in to the wood - coupled with the more aggressive self-drilling tip removing too much material. I think! 👍

Here in the USA (at least where I live) Phillips head is still very popular. Why, I am not sure, as the newer types are so much easier to work with. Availability probably pays a big part. To each, his own I guess.

For some reason over here they only get used in drywall screws... and other random stuff where you then have to hunt out an old phillips bit 'cause you can't use a pozi bit in phillips. 👍😂

Great video. However I notice the majority of screws tested have a self countersinking head that cuts into the surface, so would make a mess of a metal fitting, particularly if plated. I talked to sccrewfix as I have a need for using 3mm diameter screws and they could not find any in their range that would fit without the self cutting countersink. Toolstation do seem to have something though.

Bad news - you can't really pocket hole MDF if the thread is going in to the edge grain - well you can, but it will be a weak joint. Fine if the thread goes in to the face grain but you need to design stuff to avoid screwing in to the edge of MDF if possible. 👍

I had a old master trim carpenter tell me if you have a screw pull out of mdf, you can drill the hole oversize, glue in a piece of dowel that fits and it will allow you to put the screw back in the same spot. I have never tried this, but I wonder if you might test this with a couple of your screw picks, and see if it is a suitable repair, or the old man was pulling my chain.

Yes - defo. Would probably be stronger than the original screw since MDF takes glue very well and the dowel should take a screw very well. 👍

Gosforth Handyman - now I thought about it, it might also be an excellent way to patch a misplaced Blum hinge. Although the dowel would show on the back of the door, it would be invisible from the front. Since most people don’t look at the backs of cabinet doors, a bit of paint might make it disappear.

Very interesting test. Thanks for sharing. What's the advantage of MDF above chipboard (both melamine coated or "pure")? Is it stronger, or lighter in weight? I was at a cabinet maker in my home town in Slovakia but het does not use MDF (only sometimes for kitchen cabinet-doors) In general it's too expensive here. People don't want it (or they don't know it)

Hi Hans, MDF has a much smoother surface and therefore makes it an ideal product for making "low cost" cabinets. I'd say you can probably make anything in MDF that you could with chipboard /particle board. MDF is made with long fibres whereas particle board is made with short grains/chips. Not sure about the weight, (both are incredibly heavy, compared to say plywood) As you probably know chipboard is lousy at holding a screw into the face and edge, whereas you can see from Andy's test results MDF does a pretty good job with holding a screw driven into the face (it is not as good on edge, but still better than chipboard in my experience!) My "guess" to your first question would be that MDF cabinets would no doubt last longer than a cabinet made out of chipboard. Do they primarily use melamine coated particle board for kitchen cabinets in Slovakia? What are you doing now? Cheers, David

Thanks David, for your extensive explanation. It seems that I'll have to find (buy) somewhere MDF (scrap pieces to begin with for trying things out) Yes, in Slovakia (at least according what I heard from the local kitchen cabinet maker) primarily melamine coated particle board is being used for kitchen cabinets. Your last question "What are you doing now?" I don't understand. At this moment I'm reacting on your explanation. In daily life I'm self-employed. I like DIY and I'd like to start up a kind of Handyman service.

You got it, I misunderstood your comment "i was at a cabinet maker in my home town". I had meant "what is your work/job now". Having been self employed, I feel this is a much better way to make a living. Do you also follow Peter Millard and Charlie DIYte they both communicate very well and offer a lot of info that's valuable to a handyman. All the best and maybe you can combine KZbin with your handyman business? (because I figure KZbin gives Andy (gosforth handyman), Peter (10 minute workshop) and Charlie (Charlie DIYte) some credibility and a leap over their competition) Cheers, David.

Thanks David. Yes, I follow Peter Millard (from spring this year or so). Through him I came to the YT Channel of Gosforth Handyman. The Charly DIY YT Channel I don't follow (till this very moment I did not know the existence of it). I'll for sure have a look there. I have so many ideas/plans for doing/making things but time and energy have their boundaries. I'd like to be a cat, which has 7 (9?) lives. But I'd like to have those lives all at the same time. Since this is not possible, I'll have to cope with the facts of "normal life".

Great comments all 'round. Just to add, MDF takes paint, screws really well (if you use the right screws) and takes glue very well. You can also do nice smooth routing (e.g. round-overs for window sills etc.). Melamine faced chipboard (MFC) is great for shelves etc. in cabinets as it doesn't need painting and the melamine is very hard wearing - but chipboard is terrible for screws. Both don't like water. Even moisture resistant MDF isn't completely immune to water damage. 👍

Brilliant test Tuesday Andy. Would like to know your views on pocket screws usage in MDF as I'm starting to use more in shelving and cabinets. Cheers

Would have liked to see some reisser screws in there as that's what you get from Howdens and Magnet etc. Good test tho👍

All the scientific studies claim that MDF is a homogeneous material. In my experience I've found that there are hard and soft areas which affects the holding property. Would appreciate others comments

It would have been interesting if you had also tested the strength of a bolt (with a small sized washer) that way we could get a rough idea of how the screw axial force compares to the "Maximum" axial force the MDF itself can withhold. Hopefully I am not talking nonsense ...

I think even a small through bolt, like the sort used on cabinet door handles, would take more than my test jig could handle (300kg+). 👍
