When my ex-husband died I suggested Henderson's Funeral Home. (Husband and wife had come out of retirement because there was a need for an African American Funeral Home. They had been happily retired in Georgia, and relocated back to Iowa. They refer to the funeral business as their ministry.) After the service 2 nieces got catty and snippy. Mrs. Henderson spoke up, "Ladies, we do not act like this at a funeral." They calmed down immediately. I was so proud of Mrs. Henderson for nipping it in the bud. We are not African American yet we were welcomed with open arms. Thank you for letting me share.

I worked in LE and was at the emergency room on an investigation when the ambulance brought in a patient who almost died from a heroin overdose. I overheard the ER Dr making unprofessional comments about the patient. Never in my career had this ever happened, but something told me to go into this man's room and speak to him. I walked in and the man was coherent, seemed well kept and was polite. We talked and he mentioned he had a young daughter in another state and we both discussed how hard addictions can be to conquer. I suggested to him sometimes we may need some help from someone more powerful than us to get us back together and he agreed. We did not go into religion, but it was apparent he believed in God. I asked him if he would like to talk to a hospital chaplain and he said yes. I went to the nurse's station and relayed the message, went back to his room to tell him I had asked for a chaplain. I wished him the best and went back to my business. Fast forward about 4yrs. I'm retired from LE and working at a funeral home. I go in to work a funeral and it's the same guy I talked to in the hospital a few years back. After the funeral I spoke with one of his brothers and told him the story and he was so happy we had met that day. This is just my opinion, but I think I was put in his room that day for a reason and I'm thankful I was able to share a conversation with him.

@Marshall Lord, What an amazing story. I think you did a kindness for that man; he was struggling and you offered him hope by pointing the Way. It sounds so simple, and yet the AA 12-step model is the most successful program available today. The rest of the story was up to him. Sadly, he couldn't recover - and I'm not judging him. Maybe he fulfilled his life's mission. Only he and the Lord know. His brother probably appreciated the kindness and hope you extended to him. God bless you and thank you for your service. Stay safe out there.

My elderly neighbors who had owned the busy local funeral home for years, said that they had a 10 am furneral and the Presbyterian minister who was doing the furneral, got arrested that morning for Grand theft. This was in the 1950s, but they got someone else to do it quickly.

When we had my mothers services one of her younger sisters went up and started talking about their young preteen/teenage days and how she would have to go with my mom and things she saw my mom do(my moms sister was talking with disgust in her voice eyes rolling and everything) I could not believe what she was up there saying in front of everyone. Sooo my other aunt got her turn to speak and she pointed her finger at the first one and said “I remember when I used to go with you, and the things I saw you doing” OMG 😳 it made me happy hearing my aunt standing up for my mom and bringing my other aunt down several pegs! 👊🏼 LOL.

I missed my mom’s memorial service due to having major surgery the week before. My oldest daughter and her fiancé attended. Well long story short my nephew got up in the middle of the service and threw a major fit about “those people from Chicago “ (us). Caused a major commotion. Oh it gets better… during the dismissal to the meal the same nephew tackled another nephew… my brother, future son in law & nephew both just back from the Middle East, had to contain him and get him removed. They all laugh about it now but when my daughter called to tell me WTF was my reply! We call it the Jerry Springer funeral now.

Not a funeral director but worked at a funeral home. Calling hours 2 to 4 - wife. Calling hours 6 - 8 - girlfriend. You see where this is going. I hear a crash and think OMG somebody passed out. Run in there and a girl is on the floor and people are screaming at her! Get off the floor, you make a scene all the time! I calmly turned around and walked out. And we did the calling hours, so the funeral directors were normally not there. This was for a girl that hit a tree in her car and got burned up. Grandma comes up to me (Mom is visibly upset), asking for a lock of the granddaughter's hair. Yes, closed casket. I called the funeral director and he said "Tell her she knows why you can't give her a lock of hair." She was so burned up, that there wasn't any hair left.

At my Father's funeral. Half way thru the service, the Pastor got really quiet, we thought it was an odd time for a dramatic pause. Then she passes out fell backwards in to all the flowers and potted plants, knocking them over and hitting the casket. She was fine. Turns out it's something she does every so often lol. Would have been nice to know. Usually she sits down when she feels one coming. Funeral staff cleaned things up and finished the service for her. And honestly I think they did a better job than the Pastor was doing. lol

A family did not go to the cemetery & make arrangements for burial although I was told "everything was handled" before the day of service. My reaction at the cemetery gate was WTF!!! But I remained calm & the cemetery gate person allowed us to have a graveside service inside a nearby mausoleum & the family would need to follow up after the service. From that day forward, I've always phoned ahead to confirm dispo. arrangements at cemeteries. They could have turned us away.

My best friend's dad had passed away and was cremated. The day of the burial the funeral home just left him. We aren't even sure if he was left at the office or with a worker. While waiting for him to arrive to everyone's shock here came a tractor with his ashes in the front loader. No one from the funeral home stayed around. Plus he wasn't in the urn they had purchased. Just the black box. A family friend of mine worked at the funeral home. He was off duty but I contacted him and he got things in the works. The lady brought out the correct urn and stayed for the service. A meeting at the funeral home took place the next day. Bad, Bad, Bad

One of our church members passed a couple years ago, and the funeral was to be held at the church. Being the janitor/caretaker of the church, I would spend the night at the church the night before, cleaning and setting up for the funeral on saturday morning. The funeral was supposed to be at 10am and the family was a whole hour late, so we are sitting here with this corpse in the church waiting for over an hour then when they FINALLY showed up, they werent organized... Needless to say, I was embarrassed and I started reserving sections solely for the family so that they have somewhere to sit. That was my WTF moment

Mine was a couple of weeks ago at my mother's funeral. Just before the Mass service started I thought I'd better go to the restroom. So I go and I cannot get my pants fastened. The shirt or tie kept getting in the way and I couldn't see what the issue was. After a few minutes I begin to panic oh no they are waiting on me to start the service. I blast out of the restroom and the Funeral Director was standing there and I said Brandon son of **** I can't get these pants fastened. He laughs, we both laugh and he fastened them for me. Said he would bill me. LOL As I walked into the church area to sit in the front row everyone was looking at me. So I am guessing they heard it all.

I've lost 2 young relatives to heroin overdoses, both leaving small children behind, and the one attended the other's funeral because they weren't just related they were besties. After the first young/early 20s relative died, I would talk to the second young woman also in her early/mid 20s trying to get through to her using the first cousin as an example, telling her you don't want to leave your kids behind, you gotta stop, etc. Unfortunately, nothing anyone said or did helped. She followed the cousin not quite 3 years later, the same reason. Then lost an aunt 2 days after THAT funeral. It's just absolutely crazy losing so many family members so close together. Aunt wasn't either girl's mom but, it was really unexpected and quick, and the timing was just horrible.

Hi Kari, I'll give you a couple of different angles we had. One of your guest's wtf moment was forgetting the crypt and tent. That would have been no problem for us. First as to the crypt, that is not a necessity for us. It's more for safety of people walking around much later because of a dip in the ground. And also for appearances, but we can fill the indentation in later and make it look good. But we have no problem burying a casket by itself. As to the tent, we didn't use them. We wanted as short a graveside service as possible. So if the weather was lousy the family wouldn't be inclined to long eulogies (they could save them for the meal of consolation.) Greg

At my wife's grandfathers service, the minister said his name once, talked about him less then 5 minutes, then went on a 25 minute rant that we needed to repent!! He went as far as saying "You could step off the sidewalk and be killed on the way out of here!" Our grandmother sat with her mouth agape, as he was a relative. After the service as I had never met him, I walked up and said "I would like to shake your hand. That was the worst funeral I have ever heard preached!" As he stared at me shocked, I ask him if he even knew his service was supposed to bring comfort? He has got better over the years, but he has a funny look on his face when I walk in...

I once went to a biker wake (I wont say which Biker group), they rented out the whole funeral home for the wake all day long 12 hours or so I was told, when I was 22 or so with my step dad and my mother, he was a hang around and invited to the wake. I had never been to one before (biker wake) I was told I was Designated Driver for them. (I scratched my head because who needs a D.D. at a wake ? little background on me I grew up catholic, in a very formal family, you attended a wake in a black suit, white shirt and plain black tie period, I was the only person besides the workers dressed up ). 60 to 100 guys in leather cuts, ripped jeans, filthy boots, ladies there scantily clad or barely clothed, motorcycles lined up surrounding the building, drinking beer by the case, bottles of Crown, deceased liquor of choice, passed around in the parking lot drinking in the viewing room right next to the casket. There were bike Burnouts being done in the parking lot, they had hundreds of beers cans and broken bottles strewn all over the parlor, parking lot even a couple of empty cans were stuffed into the casket with the deceased, that had to plucked out. the Funeral director called the police but the police didn't consider it a priority so nothing was really done. The bikers got drunker and louder and more upset, the more they drank, till it happened... a fight broke out, all over the place everybody brawled breaking pictures, walls, chairs ( I was hiding by the casket thinking it was the safest place since they wouldn't want to knock over the casket... boy was I wrong) and then one guy fell after having a chair hit him, against the end of the casket it and tipped over like a see saw it hit the floor with a loud thud so hard, feet side down and the hinge on the lid broke and slammed down. It felt like the whole police force showed up lights and sirens, as soon as they bikers heard that magic sounds they stopped fighting and ran out jumping on bikes and peeling out like a bat out of hell half of them left their women in the funeral home in a hurry to leave. I had to stay and give an account to the police, which didn't help because I didn't know anybody, after all that I played taxi the rest of the evening to the women who were left behind and give them a ride back to the biker club. Yeah I am never going to another biker Wake ever again. (p.s. you won't find this story in the news because the funeral director and the police glossed it over when it showed up in the blotter because if what had truly happened got out and ruined the funeral home rep, the owner said he would sue the police for not taking the director seriously and destroying his business so it was hushed up.)

Im completely inspired by this (Kari im looking into starting mortuary college and youre a great inspiration). At my grandmother's funeral in 2022, (Covid also, it touched way too many lives,) the Pastor continually referred to himself in the third person and after reading her obituary started telling everyone about his wife and how wonderful she IS, yes still living. It was a horrible eulogy if you want to even call it that. But yep, i had cried myself into a migraine but he started third personing and i stopped, looked up, and stared horrified.

That nightmare was so real. I then thought of my mother. I had I told her abt, that dream she would've cracked up lsughing. " see i told u abt watching, all those crazy movies!"😂😂😂

My grandma died two months after my Dad. They did not get along. My Dad said that when his sister was born, he was about 3. She told him to go do something and he stuck his tongue out and she took the sewing shears on her bedside table and she cut off the end of his tongue. Anyway, she was never a loving grandma. She had prearranged for an immediate cremation. It was a graveside service. My husband and I got there an hour early. They had brought a van, her ashes and a card table. That was it! I had brought a bouquet I’d flowers. I asked the funeral director if they had a tablecloth to cover the card table? He said no, she didn’t pay for that. OMG! I told my husband that I would go buy a tablecloth if he would just stay there in case anyone from the family got there before I got back. It was 5 miles away and I knew exactly where I was going so I was really fast. So I got back put the tablecloth on the card table and placed the ashes and the flowers and then people start arriving. Then this minister, who we did not know started talking and he said how she was such a warm and loving person and would be deeply missed and then talked about how good her cooking was (I never ate any of her cooking that wasn’t burned!) My cousins and I thought maybe we were at the wrong funeral and this was not grandma based on what this minister was saying and at the end, he said her name and we knew we had the right person. We looked over to the left and there was probably 30 people dressed in black off to the side and we had no idea who they were. So after the funeral I walked over there and I asked them who they were and they said we went to church with her. I asked she went to church? I would think that any church that she would walk into would immediately catch on fire, she was just not a nice person. They asked if we were having a reception and I said no because we didn’t plan on a lot of people being there, as a matter of fact her sisters didn’t even come because they didn’t like her. If that gives you some insight into who she was. They asked if we were having a gathering and I said actually we’re going to this restaurant and bar and we made arrangements to sit in the bar and have some drinks and eat but it’s not that big so it’s not going to accommodate a big group. They asked if we minded if they had a memorial potluck for her at the church the following Sunday and I said no not at all I said none of us will be there because most of us live far away or out of state. When my husband and I arrived at the bar my family asked did you find out who those people were and when I told them there was just dead silence while everyone was trying to wrap their head around it and then we all just started laughing because we couldn’t believe it. That is the weirdest funeral that I have ever been at. 😂😂😂

Our good friend and neighbor lost their Dad. As we get into the funeral home for the wake our distraught friend came to us to say… they lost my Dad’s body. It was no where in the funeral home and folks were arriving to pay their respects. They find the body days later still at the hospital.

Leinenkugle is the only beer I like from a store. I want to go there one day. I've worked with enough funeral directors to have collected some stories and to have been in part of a few. The ones that are cringe worthy for me are the ones who want to go as cheap as possible, going through a company that advertises how low the cost is but doesn't explain the parts that are missing. Then the funeral director is stuck dealing with the anger or feelings of betrayal when it isn't what the family expected.

In the course of human life, funeral directors can work under dual pressure. There are many tasks that take place inside and outside the funeral home that meet the eye. As for those stories told in "What the F#@K Moments" at the Funeral Home episode, strange things just keep on happening!

I have a wtf moment and I’m not in the funeral business. I used to work for a printing company making deliveries. I was making a delivery to a hospital . And I had park in the loading dock . And funeral homes would also use the dock area also. But they were bringing out someone on the stretcher. And the front of stretcher collapsed. Thankfully the body didn’t come rolling off.

Would love to hear a discussion on careers in the field of funeral director, embalmer, mortician. Is it something that "regular" people can adapt to or does it take a "different breed". Is there any personal satisfaction that comes from it? Can you stay "fresh" by learning new things. Is there a type of person that can be successful in this field and are there other types that shouldn't even consider it. (ie can you tune out what you see and do or do you need to be insensitive/immune from normal emotion?) Just curious as to why a person should consider the career if it's more than $'s?

Do I bring this up with the family...? Is that what I do? Do I just go: So there's a mouse in Joe's shoe... ROFL! Not funeral related, but a moment my husband had at his work: He had a carpet cleaning business and he'd be left alone in an empty rental house all day. One day he was working all alone again, doing his thing, when he took a break and thought, for some reason, it would be a good idea to throw his peppermint into his coke bottle. The moment it left his fingers he went "Oh sh**" and tried his best to stop what came next. He failed. Putting your mouth over the top of the coke bottle does, in fact, not help, he says. Needless to say, carpets weren't the only things he cleaned that day. XD
