Not a country capital, but the state capital of Amapá state in Brazil, Macapá, sits right on the equator. There's a football pitch with one side on the northern hemisphere, and one half on the southern.

The equator isn't an imaginary, arbitrary line. It's the line equidistant between the two poles, and is the region where the sun is overhead at exactly 90˚ at solar noon on the spring and autumn equinoxes.

zenith! also the tropic of capricorn marks the southernmost latitude at which the sun can appear directly overhead at noon. the tropic of cancer marks the northermost latitude... bla bla bla, and the artic and antartic circles mark the limits at which there's at least one one day without sunrise during winter and without sunset during summer

Imaginary but not arbitrary. Imaginary, because there is no physical sign on the surface that tells where the equator exactly is, we just draw it based on astronomy Not arbitrary, because it's based on astronomy

Arbitrary because the equator depends on the Earth's axis. Actually the axis shifts slightly over time.

It is not the country's capital, but Indonesia has a province which capital sits right on the equator. It's called Pontianak, the capital of West Kalimantan. You may found The Equator Momunent in this city, next to the famous Kapuas River.

hahaha go south just a bit like Jakarta or Bali or perhaps cities in Sumatra like Palembang, Padang then yea finally welcome to the Southern Hemisphere 😂 but honestly tho you wouldn’t get much of a difference climate wise here in the tropics except for tropical cities that located further North like Bangkok, Manila, Vientiane, Yangon yupp those tropical climates are a bit different than us who live closer to the equator

Nairobi in Kenya , is just south of the Equator. My husband and I lived and worked 50miles south of the Equator , and 150KM from Nairobi. I watched the water going down the plug hole in our bathroom. Sometimes it went clockwise and sometimes it went anti-clockwise . The man with the watering can, a jug and a funnel, who entertains toiurists in Nanuki Kenya , must be faking his display of the water changing direction once he crossed the Equator ! Perhaps someone could explain how he does it ?

The equator is a circle of latitude that divides a spheroid, such as Earth, into the Northern and Southern hemispheres. On Earth, the Equator is an imaginary line located at 0 degrees latitude, about 40,075 km (24,901 mi) in circumference, halfway between the North and South poles.[1] The term can also be used for any other celestial body that is roughly spherical. In spatial (3D) geometry, as applied in astronomy, the equator of a rotating spheroid (such as a planet) is the parallel (circle of latitude) at which latitude is defined to be 0°. It is an imaginary line on the spheroid, equidistant from its poles, dividing it into northern and southern hemispheres. In other words, it is the intersection of the spheroid with the plane perpendicular to its axis of rotation and midway between its geographical poles. On and near the Equator (on Earth), noontime sunlight appears almost directly overhead (no more than about 23° from the zenith) every day, year-round. Consequently, the Equator has a rather stable daytime temperature throughout the year. On the equinoxes (approximately March 20 and September 23) the subsolar point crosses Earth's equator at a shallow angle, sunlight shines perpendicular to Earth's axis of rotation, and all latitudes have nearly a 12-hour day and 12-hour night

Where's the northernmost and southernmost of Tropical evergreen rainforest?
@mysteriousDSF
@mysteriousDSF 3 ай бұрын
I'm pretty sure both on the American continent. The northernmost could be in Southern Mexico or even northern from that in the Caribbean or perhaps the southernmost tip of Florida but of course everything depends on definition. The southernmost could be a part of a forest that stretches from Bolivia into northern Argentina that could be considered being the southernmost edge of the Amazon.

If anyone is interested, Malabo, the capital of Equitorial Guinea, has a latitude of 3.44°. It has a population of getting on for 300,000. PS - People looking for Tarawa on Google Maps may have a difficult time of it - I personally have no connection whatever with Kiribati, or what was known when I was a kid as the Gilbert Islands, but putting 'Tarawa' into the search bar doesn't seem to bring you anywhere, while 'Kiribati' brings you to one of the lesser populated and more outlying islands, where clearly none of the villages (mostly named after European countries and cities, though not, I'm guessing, by the locals?!) are likely to have a population getting even into four figures, let alone 70,000. While Tarawa itself is considered a city state, like Singapore, the actual heavily built up area is known as _Batio,_ the name you will want to put into the Google Maps search bar if you are looking to check out Tarawa.
