The mechanism with the belt is called a CVT technically. That stands for continuously variable transmission. However, I call it a torque converter because that's what 99% of people in the go cart and minibike world call it. I know what the torque converter is. It is a fluid filled enclosed mechanism that is an automatic transmission cars.Please stop commenting that I'm wrong.

It is actually a Continuously Variable Transmission, not a torque converter which is kind of fluid coupling with torque amplifying capability. Transmission do change the output torque (via speed differences between input and output) but the torque converter changes torque in a very different way. A centrifugal clutch has similar function as the torque converter, that is to engage/ disengage engine from transmission. For some reasons some people call CVT a torque converter while it is completely different from an actual torque converter. You can't compare transmission and clutch because they have different functions and are not interchangeable. What you have here is a CVT with a centrifugal clutch.

@JohnWheels5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The spring on the rear pulley is when the rpms of the engine increase, one side of the pulley spins about a quarter turn while also going out a bit. This allows the belt to fall into the V shape of the pulley more, changing the gear ratio slightly for more speed.

Only thing I hate about what a lot of people call a torque converter is that they don't include a motorcycle sprocket mount on the back side of the driven unit to allow for re-powering any kind of motorcycle basically the shaft that the driven unit bolts to needs to be longer and sticks out the back by at least 1 to 2 inches and is made to allow it to have a motorcycle sprocket attached to it and drive the motorcycle's rear wheel.

Is a torque converter more durable? I had a kymco scooter before and it had what I thought was both but it couldn’t idle so I’d have to jump on start and go. Either way I’m doing research because I’d like to build a mini bike. Something with enough pull to get me going closer to 45mph. Great video you are a fantastic teacher.
@JohnWheels4 жыл бұрын
Thank you a torque converter will let you go a bit faster, but I'm guessing the bad idle might be because of a gummed up carberator. Make sure all the jets are clear and then you can have a regular idle and not have to jump on it. It's normal to want to creep forward a little, but it shouldn't try to run away. The 45 mph you want can be best achieved by putting on a smaller rear sprocket. Hopefully this helped, I try my best to help, but forgive me if I'm wrong.

If I have a tight enough chain and don’t want to buy a new one can the torque converter swap a centrifugal clutch in the same exact spot? Or is it slightly different?
@JohnWheels3 жыл бұрын
No, you would have to buy another chain. The torque converter uses the chain coming from the back pulley and the centrifugal clutch uses the chain coming right off the crankshaft where the front pulley is on the torque converter. So, if you wanted to switch you would beed a new chain. Just note that I usually recommend torque converter's over centrifugal clutches so I might not recommend switching them out.

This will be way too weak for a sxs. I would try just lowering the gear ratio.
@rustybeatty65675 жыл бұрын
Don't know why people call them torque converters that not what it is it's a CVT style of Transmission better than a centrifugal clutch because a CVT has a wide range of gear ratios available in one system where as a centrifugal clutch only has one gear ratio and and that is determined by the sprockets used that is why scooter's have been using CVT's for decades now they can take a 3.5 to 5 horsepower engine that a 50cc through 150cc engine put it a scooter and a person weighing 200 pounds can get it to 30 to 75 mph but if they use a centrifugal clutch with the same engine's used would only achieve a top speed of 20 mph no matter what they do to improve the engine displacement or performance.

Hello, can you switch from a centrifugal converter to a torque converter?? I do have a Subaru robin engine with a centrifugal clutch
@JohnWheels5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm pretty sure you can, but You MIGHT need engine risers if the torque converter hits the frame, (check with the Torque converter on first) thus longer chain. It depends on your frame. You can use 2 pieces of 1" square tube, drill holes, and use longer bolts for risers. With your engine, you'll also need to trim a little off the torque converter backing plate. You can do it with a grinder or big file. Grinders are $15 at harbor freight and are a great tool. (shown in video) Cars and cameras did a video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZaoaamdl5eZrbs
@JohnWheels5 жыл бұрын
This riser kit will work if you bore out one hole on each riser, if you need risers: www.gopowersports.com/engine-riser-kit

Also, most importantly check your crankshaft size when buying a torque converter, it might be 3/4" or 1" (measure it) to know what torque converter kit to get
@JohnWheels5 жыл бұрын
Also 7/8." If it's not one of those three sizes, there will be no torque converter's available. Then, the torque converter will not fit on your particular engine. The predator engines have three-quarter inch which is the most common and they're only 100 bucks at Harbor freight. If you want, you could grind down the shaft until it is three-quarter inch with a grinder while the engine is running, but I would not recommend that

Ive been trying to get one on my 212cc predator "Your motor will just blow cause your basically adding more torque in a small engine" is this true
@whitechrist29654 жыл бұрын
No. Torque isn't going to backfeed into the engine nor is it going to make more torque than it is capable of. All a torque converter does is keep the engine power driving whatever it is driving in the most effective gear ratio. Without it you have a choice of power down low (such as taking off on a minibike from a stop) higher speed with loss of that or some compromise between the 2. This is why a lot of the vintage mopeds that didn't have variated transmissions (some did) relied on pedal assist for starting out and climbing hills

My new clutch drum is going to cost more than a whole Torque converter. I may have miscalculated somewhere along the line😒. A pro who owns one of the biggest companies in the industry once told me a torque converter is great if you want to ride in a parade but clutches are what you want to win races. Torque converters stay under constant slip and load, clutches are open or closed therefore producing heat only when they are in the process of engaging. Clutches are designed to cool fully engaged or disengaged. The heat created by both is dispersed through the engine crank which directly effects internal engine temperature. Hot engines aren't good for racing. That's what was explained to me.

That's not really a torque converter. It is a belt driven CVT (continuously variable transmission) which still uses a weighted clutch that uses centrifugal force to engage and increase the size of the drive pulley , but also a second clutch on the driven pulley to decrease it's size. a true torque converter is a type of fluid coupling mainly used on but not limited to automatic transmissions , and actually multiplies the torque when the output rotational speed is so low.

You are correct, sir.

awesome, just what I needed to know! I'm kind of a visual guy, the wikipedia entry won't do it for me...

Does it go in reverse?
@JohnWheels4 жыл бұрын
No, you would need a transmission for reverse

@@JohnWheels would a torque converter be good for a car like go kart?

(Lower top speed / faster take off) - cvt /tav/torque converter (Higher top speed/ slower take off) - clutch

How many circa crossovers you have?

What's a circa crossover?
@dale3494 жыл бұрын
In all technicality it is a cvt however the concept of a cvt is a mechanically applied torque converter the only diffrence between the 2 is variable drive capabilities both rely on centrifugal force to cause a multiplication of torque so he is correct

Good explanation of the mechanism in its fullest

I know it's actually a CVT, but a lot of people in the Go kart and Minibike world call it a torque converter. I understand how both work, but thanks

How come my belt still moves on idle?
@JohnWheels3 жыл бұрын
There are a couple reasons. One could be that your idle is set too high, two could be that you don't have the brass bushing on the front pulley, and three could be that your rear pulley isn't hooked to a chain that goes to your tire or axle. If you don't have the rear pulley hooked to anything, it will just free spin and you should be able to stop it wish your hand. However, I strongly don't recommend touching the pulley while it is spinning.
