I am a long time epoxy user, very fond of experimentation to test the limitations of my chemicals. After nearly 20 years I just now picked up my first bottle of uv resin, and I find that it may not be as good for jewelry making as one might think. It's really really easy to dissolve, in rubbing alcohol. Also house cleaning supplies (pine sol mr clean, tilex) and shampoo will make it cloudy by eating the surface off of it. If you want your jewelry to last long it should probably be glazed or fully coated in regular epoxy resin. Ooooone more thing! Don't use clear nail polish, mod podge, triple thick, or diamond glaze to glaze your jewelry pieces, those things are not meant to be worn against the skin, they will flake off after a very short time, especially if they are banged around a good bit.

Very informative and useful video, thank you so much for all the tips. I've been using AB resin for about four years to put a thick coat on top small flat acrylic pieces and the part of having to measure and mix it properly is not my favorite and I also the many hours it takes to dry completely is always against my need to have the pieces ready in a small amount of time.. I've also had some issues sometimes with humidity. Certain level of humidity in the air (like during the rainy season) has caused the resin not to curate completely and it stays sticky ruining the pieces because there's nothing you can do. I figured out a way to control and prevent this by putting the pieces inside a plastic container with hermetic lid and with a 2cm layer at the bottom of thsee tiny round pellets that are used to trap humidity. I place the acrylic pieces directly on this layer of pellets and since I've been doiing it the pieces curate perfectly well. I want to try UV resin but what I've knowns so far about has just left me all confused. Some say it's perfect for jewelry, others say it's not, Some say it is crystal clear, some say it's yellowish... and the worst I've read is here in your comments which say that it easily turns cloudy with alcohol, soap or some other cleaning supplies, so now I don't know if I should try it or not. I believe I'll give it a try so I may see by myself how it works. I wanted to buy it from your Amazon store buy I was dissapointed to find it's not available. Any other place where that brand that you recommend may be found?
@DIYAlex2 жыл бұрын

The experience of one person doesn't mean that's the experience everyone will have. If epoxy was highly toxic you'd see a lot more issues and death due to using it than you do now. Remember that epoxy has been used for years in other industries, not just by crafters to make tumblers.

Very informative...I have a ton of epoxy resin that I didn't use because I thought it didn't work for some reason...I think I just wasn't waiting long enough for it to dry lol
@DIYAlex4 жыл бұрын
Lol well I hope that helps! Your UV lamp or the sun should do the trick!

Regular epoxy for something that big.

Can you use a thin layer of UV resin on top of epoxy resin? I was thinking it might be a good way to quickly customize a wooden sign. 🤔

I never got mine to cure on top of epoxy, but others say it works so I pails give it a try!

Informative. I had great experience with epoxy. Trying uv now and I notice it is not self leveling and small pin holes show up after curing. Also, tacky and oily.
@DIYAlex3 жыл бұрын
Hmm.. I would try a different brand than what you’re using because I don’t have any of those issues.

@@DIYAlex Geez, I tried lets resin. Still pin holes. ugh. maybe from flame popping bubbles?

thank u! would uv be good for making rings? like thicker rings... or is epoxy better for that?
@DIYAlex3 жыл бұрын
You'd probably need epoxy for rings.

Do you have to use the hardener? What if you want it to be flexible?
@DIYAlex4 жыл бұрын
Yes you have to use the hardener. Epoxy does not have the ability to be flexible when it’s properly cured.

Hello! I'm glad I found this video as it is very informative! I'm planning to get into resins and I saw a UV Resin product that is organic and non-toxic. Do I still need to use gas mask / respiratory for that? I'm planning to only work on small items. Thank youuu ~!
@DIYAlex3 жыл бұрын
I always recommend wearing a mask regardless of what the packaging says.

No I don’t believe you’ll find an organic resin.

hello I want to create a miniature figure for jewelry making from UV Resin Hard Type and I'm wondering if the material evaporates or not at 800 degrees ? to create a figure of precious metal as jewelers do it from wax
@DIYAlex2 жыл бұрын
I don’t have any experience with that. Sorry!

Hi there. I am looking at making jewelery using gel nail polish to make jewelery (painting onto a ring blank) then just using the UV resin to set the design. Or do I need to do a layer of resin first and sandwich everything? Thankyou :)
@DIYAlex4 жыл бұрын
I have never used gel nail polish so I can't say for sure, but there shouldn't be a need for a base layer of UV resin underneath everything.

Is there a difference in strength between regular and uv resin? I was wanting to do something with eyeglasses... will it adhere to the acetate plastic of eyeglasses well? Should I sand before trying to adhere it for better grip? Thanks so much
@DIYAlex3 жыл бұрын
Yes. The whole video explains the differences :). I wouldn't use resin on glasses.

Hello! I’m wanting to start a resin keychain,bookmarks,combs,little trinkets such and coffins, would you suggest what kind of resin for these projects? Also if I use UV resin many many watts would the UV light have to be? Thank you !😁💖
@DIYAlex4 жыл бұрын
You could us either epoxy or UV resin if the molds you have are clear. If the molds are not clear, use epoxy. UV lamps need to be 50 watts or more to cure UV resin.
