H in HKEY means "Hive Key"... and those root registry folders are simply the loaded forms of the hives, the files found on several paths in a Windows installation.

- 0:40 There actually is a driver/program called RegFS that lets you mount the registry hives as a filesystem so that you can browse and edit them in File Explorer just like actual files. Sadly, it was pretty unstable and didn't support the newer changes to the registry format and was eventually discontinued. 😕 - 3:21 You can use ERUNT to defrag and shrink the registry (like using the _vacuum_ command on SQLite databases). - You didn't mention how the mappings work, that is, how system and user settings override or take precedence when there's a collision.

The Registry was introduced with Windows 95. Before that Windows 3.1 (and 3.0) simply used a couple of .ini files: win.ini system.ini desktop.ini user.ini etc. And they were just simple text files you could open with Windows Notepad. They contained some code-like text but were mostly readable by anyone. Every individual program also made use of its own .ini files as well. It was simple, but far too limited. A more database-like system like the Registry was inevitable.

0:15 I could be wrong here, but according to my experience in database development i think you probably misunderstood something. There are no variables in document databases, but only keys and values. The things on the left are actually just a type of "distribution keys" which are used to organize the data (quite similar to objects in JSON), and the things inside them are the actual keys and their values. For example the "Desktop distribution key" in the "current user root distribution key" could contain a "key" named "AnyRandomBackground" and a string value in side which is a file path (the names could be wrong, but I wrote them just for the understanding). This is a common structure in document databases (for example JSON), and I could recommend you to learn a bit about it, just for the basic understanding. It is very interesting.

I looked up the documentation and I think ThioJoe is right in this case. According to Microsoft's terminology the "keys" on the right side are just called "value names". Search "Structure of the Registry" in Microsoft's docs.

Slowly I got more familiar without and learned about it and now I delete, edit and add entries to registry all the time, it really comes in handy to learn about the registry.

As a Linux user who hasn't used Windows since the days of Win98, I'd be interested in knowing more about how it works from a programmatic standpoint as well as how bits of the registry are protected from ordinary users modifying them. Could a user just select the root of the tree and hit delete?

hkey_users won't necessarily show registry data for all users. It depends when the users were last logged in, when the machine was rebooted/reloaded, etc. All these years (decades) I didn't realize there was HKCC. I've always been going to HKLM\system\currentControlSet Then again, HKCC doesn't contain all of CurrentControlSet, and you still have to go to ..\System\CurrentControlSet from HKCC so maybe I'll just stick with what I've been going to.

Now, due to the recent explosions of cyberattacks, how will you know if your HKEY in the registries are good, or potentially harmful, or dangerous? Malwarebytes usually will detect the dangerous HKEY programs if your computer is infected with these bad registries, but can they find all of the bad stuff?

HKEY is really just a weird implementation detail with how registry access works in the Win32 API. Win32 's use of hungarian notation for identifiers means everything needs to have its type in the name so the constants to access the root keys all start with HKEY because they are used as handles to the root keys.

For some reason windows logged me a temp profile, but I still access to my user date, but my settings were reset: My desktop, my app settings. (and would reset each reboot). I had to delete a registry setting, change a name of one to .bak, and the change the user profile from temp back to my user profile. (because it auto correct to temp when I deleted the .bak key.) The registry has become a dumping ground for installed software. When software is uninstalled it may leave behind junk that over time clutteres up the registry with orphaned keys. But unless I can proove that a key is never referenced by any software on my machine I won't delete that key. I don't trust Norton when it tells me I have 2k registry orphans. How would you prove that a registry key is never referenced by any software? I know there are utilities that monitor the install process and record any changes to the registry so that the changes can be undone. But I cant remember the names of any of these utilities
