If you’ve got white lumps in your throat, they could be tonsil stones or “tonsilloliths.” (They're super gross, and really common.)

For me, Tonsil Stones were caused by chronic mild dehydration. Drink a healthy amount of water daily and they will go away and never return. I had them decades before I realized this and tried most of the remedies described below with no success. Started drinking more water and haven't had tonsil stones for more than 10 years. Thanks Anna for posting this video!

If you ever get that feeling that you got something stuck in the back of your throat? That's a tonsil stone. And no it's not true to have tonsillitis or any issues with your tonsil to have them regardless if you practice oral hygiene or not. Most importantly "from personal experience" when trying to remove the stones be very gentle. Removing them can couse your tonsils to bleed or get infected. Something felt stuck in the back of my mouth and come to find after being very gently I removed14 stones from one tonsil and it got inflected. Alsmost had to remove it regardless of proper oral hygiene my entire life.

What works for me is these little syringes you can buy from Amazon. I load them up with water and aim at the fold behind the tonsil. Usually I know I have tonsil stones when I wake up in the morning and my mouth feels disgusting. What a relief to actually get one of them out. I like to then squeeze them and sniff them knowing that crap isn't inside my mouth anymore.

I've actually had tonsil stones a few times. The first time I had absolutely no idea what was going on. I was actually at an amusement park with friends riding a go-cart when I started feeling these little lumps in the back of my mouth. Apparently my tonsils were ejecting the stones right at that moment. As I worked my tongue around to help pop them out, I started spitting out these stinky little nuggets that were about 1 - 3mm in size. Once I got them all worked out I didn't have them again for years. The next time I saw them the stones I got were BIG! Maybe a full centimeter in size. I used a dental cleaning pick and looked in the mirror to scrape them out. I think I may have had 2 or 3 more since then, but it's very rare at this point. More than anything it's just really confusing the first time you get them if you don't already know what they are or where they come from.

For as far back as i can remember i've had constant bouts of tonsilitis. I noticed that i had these nasty buggers around a year ago now. Besides often suffering from sore throats and not-always-so-pleasant breath, it's extremely entertaining to watch them pop right out of their cozy little cot. Not only do I find that fun, but it's also relieving, as I'm sure you could imagine. gross, but totally worth it.

I just watched this video twice and found it simple and fascinating. I'm surprised I haven't hear of this before. I wonder how many others aren't aware of this, because like you said the smell of some peoples' breath is unbearable! One friend would cover her own mouth every time it was her turn to talk and she told me that she was aware of her bad breath, but had tried everything and couldn't make it better. Why don't dentists and hygienists regularly put out information in this regard. Again, you are correct when you say, "Nobody wants to talk about this," but we need to! Thanks!

@bethrizzo7822
@bethrizzo7822 8 жыл бұрын
+TheiLame No I don't think the stones actually caused infections. But, I think they weakened the tonsils by keeping them inflamed and filled with the bacteria of the tonsil stones constantly imbedded in them. I think if you pick a lot at the tonsil stones with whatever implements (toothpick, q-tip, whatever you use) you can definitely invite infection and cause issues.

I suppose that some people might not know they have tonsil stones because I for one have been getting them for longer than I can remember, and always thought they were just large chunks of peanuts that got stuck in my throat. What lead to figuring out what was actually happening is that it occurred to me that I'd get them even when I hadn't had any peanuts for quite some time. I bet there would be more accurate consensus if this was more common knowledge.

My best idea as to why these seem so gross is because anyone can have one. Most of this show is stuff happening in specific parts of the world, away from where you live. But this is something that doesn't care about race, gender, or location. As long as you have tonsils, it can affect you, so your mind thinks there's a better chance it can happen to you and thus is more grossed out. I also think this is why I can watch a horror movie with someone getting cut into two without batting an eye, but cringe whenever I see someone poke their eye, because the second one has a better chance of happening to me.
@grossscienceshow

Sometimes thay can just pop out themselves and get stuck in your throat while being "unswallowable", so you end up coughing them up. They could also be relatively large and have multiples pop out at the same time. (Once I had 2 comeout at the same time, prompting me to check with my doctor and finally have a tonsilectomy)

You might find the tonsil stones revolting because of how seemingly unfitting they are, in your buccal system. Everything is very pink-red and fleshy, save for those solid teeth. When suddenly, a gelatinous white body show up in a hiding spot. Instinct speaks: "It's unhealthy! Do something!"

Thank you for this really informative video. I've had these a lot because I have large tonsils and I get a lot of sore throats and occasional strep. But at least I know what they are now!

I saw it somewhere saying that if you have a really bad smelly sneeze, which sometimes I have, it could be due to small tonsil stones that will only come out in a sneeze. In case when I had it, it only made the sneeze particularly bad, and right after the sneeze my breath will be ok. Not sure if it is really tonsil stone though. I never saw it.

Anna, can you do a video on foreskin and debunking the myths about it? That would be a really great thing you could do, to show people that foreskin isn't gross but is a normal healthy body part with benefits. You have a really nice manner for educating people and I love your videos! 🙂 More people including doctors need to be educated about foreskin so they don't just keep circumcising healthy babies because they believe wives tales and myths.

I have really small ones, and the funny thing was I started having this weird taste sometimes when I was eating food, like occasionally I would just eat something really delicious and then suddenly I got this bad taste when swallowing the food, after a few weeks I went to look in the mirror if it was something strange in my mouth causing this. And then I saw a really small tonsil stone sitting on my tonsils and i squeezed it out. After that I squeeze them out maybe twice a week and it's so MUCH FUN! I don't have many and since I'm squeezing them out regularly I don't really "taste" them either, but they do smell like anus mixed with puke and old corpse.
