Can we talk about the sound design of this episode? The rainy night at Harrenhal, the candlelit conversation at the Sept, there were so many moments when everything sounded so loud and so quiet all at once. I found it add to the riveting nature of their scenes.

Loved this episode and loved your honest thoughts! Rhaenyra sneaking into King's Landing was perhaps the stupidest thing I've ever seen, but damn, it was an amazing intense scene. Probably one of the last times we will see these two together for a long time (if ever again), so I understand why it was done the way it was. And at least now I think Rhaenyra knows she has to stop being reluctant to war and step up her game. My impression why it seems so easy for everyone to just sneak around is that security is lax, even more so now that Aegon's crew are so incompetent and not taking anything seriously. I personally liked the lack of battle at the beginning. It felt effective to me the dramatic cut to a wasted battlefield. All the Daemon/Harrenhal stuff was amazing. Simon Strong is just a mood and I love him, haha! I really want a therapist for all the Greens, for the love of God! Aemond, Aegon and Helaena are all in desperate need of hugs or something. Again, great review! Reaction videos where people are watching an episode are fun and all, but I prefer discussion videos like this digging into the plot, characters and analysis.

I think the scene in the sept was a good idea, but found it frustrating that Rhaenyra stops short of explaining the entire prophecy to Alicent. It's like once she hears the information she's looking for to answer her own question she doesn't take it any further. If you're trying to negotiate your way out of a war after there have been injustices and murders on both sides, you'd better have a damned good reason. A prophecy that could doom everyone IS such a reason. But instead she brushes it off as "it was this story my father used to tell," like NO dumbass, it's existential and the entire reason he named you his heir! To call that a missed opportunity is an understatement. It seems so pointless that they had that conversation only to resolve to go to war anyway. Rhaenyra, if she REALLY cared about the prophecy, could simply offer to step down from her claim and meet with the council at King's Landing to explain the prophecy to them and collaborate on a plan going forward. But I think she wants to be queen for the sake of being queen, like to validate her father's love for her. And Alicent obviously doesn't care that both her sons are rabid psychopaths, so she's an even worse problem.

Something about the way they cut from the petty, almost childish exchange between Bracken and Blackwood lads to suddenly this enormous wasteland filled with slain soldiers honestly felt a little comedic to me, and that certainly wasn’t their intention. It was just such a sudden pan out it almost felt like a punchline. If I didn’t know more of the context bc of the book I would have been like…sheesh! That escalated quickly! All that was missing was a little ‘five minutes later’ card between the shots. So yes, I agree, I would have liked to see the battle a bit more. Might have felt more real or something?

I would not expect the entire city of Kings Landing to be some high security zone for people sneaking into the city. It is way too difficult to protect an entire city of that size when every single day thousands of people come and go. But I would expect the Red Keep to be much higher security after the Blood & Cheese situation. So I cannot expect a team of assassins would have much luck any more. Maybe going after Aegon when he was mingling with the bar and brothel crowd may have been a better target but that would require those assassins to be constantly ready to go at a moments notice any time one of the powerful Green's left the Red Keep.

I was thinking the same thing about how easy it is to infiltrate King's Landing, even after the death of Prince Jaehaerys. I'm sure the Hand of the King is taken matters into his own hands and appointing the right personnel's for the City watch and the Kings' guard. Ohhhhhhhh, wait, the hand went on a mission to take Harrenhal. Welp.... I guess it would be easy since the greens have incompetent leadership and a king who's itching to jump on his dragon but has little to no combat skills lololol

I don't make my living writing scripts but i could have made the Rahenyra/Alicent scene more logical. They said that Alicent could not be convince to come to a meeting. Why? With enough of a possible benefit she could have been. Ask her to come to a neutral location a small boat at sea, whe both side could verify that there were no other boats on the horizon or anyone lese on the boat but one bodyguard. Still not the best idea but it does with all that risk that Rhaenyra took and Alicent just letting her be and walking away.

Hi, I always really appreciate your reviews. While I agree with you hat this episode was not as compelling as th efirst 2, I do disagree with a couple of points you made. First, I absolutely do NOT see Helena in the show as 2 dimensional. Exaclty th eopposite! To me her scene with Alicent was to show her coping mechanism. Rationalising the murder of her son as well as 'forgiving' her mother - they are both narratives Helena needs to tell herself to br able to function while withdrawing more and more into herself. I find her fsacinating & far more interesting than the book version!! As for the meeting at the end of the episode, I don't mind the scene. Even the most considered person can make a rash decision. So for Rhaenyra trying to speak to Alicent works for me, even though at this point there was little hope of achieving anything. And the scene didn't just show her in a good light. Right from the start her ssense of entitlement got the better of her, causing Alicent to be defensive. Also, when she asked Alicent what Viserys had said exactly it became clear that she did harbour some doubts whether her father had indeed changed his mind in the last minute. So consciously or subconsciously, the decision to talk to Alicent may well have been informed by this need to know for sure. It certainly will help Rhaenyra with her further decisions as regards the war. What Alicent in turn will do with the realisation that she misunderstood Viserys remains to be seen. Her letting Rhaenyra go I thought was in keeping with her character. They may not be friends anymore but they were once, and Alicent is no Cristen Cole! Finally, King's Landing is indeed easy to get into. The Red Keep is NOT! The stunt of using th esecret passage ways to get inside coul donly be played once. That is why Rhaenyra was meeting Alicent in the High Sept because she would never have been able to get into the keep.
@ImpressionBlend
@ImpressionBlend 5 ай бұрын
Thank you for sharing your perspective! I particularly like your take on Helaena, and I can definitely see that being the case. However, I can't get behind Alicent letting Rhaenyra go - it's the same thing as the Rhaenys issue from last season, when she could have prevented the war (after killing a ton of innocent people breaking through the floor). With Rhaenys at least I can understand that it's not her war to start and at that point the war didn't even seem certain. Now? This is essentially Alicent having the chance to save thousands of lives by capturing Rhaenyra and choosing not to. Alicent has always been more aware of politics than her friend to begin with, so it's not like this isn't something she wouldn't think of. True, she could have been just shocked and surprised, but since we're not dealing with real people idk if this is the strongest storytelling choice. All that being said, there are things about that scene I really liked, so while I have a lot of questions about how its written, I understand why it's there and I think the acting was fantastic.
@thorstonmanderlay5010
@thorstonmanderlay5010 5 ай бұрын
@@ImpressionBlend Hi, thank you for your reply to my comments. I agree that the meeting wasn't the strongest scene, though overall it still worked for me. While it never could have changed anything as regards the war, it was still important to Rhaenyra on a personal level. She just had to have this conversation in order to move on and become decisive in her decision making. Aliment has been more politically astute, yes, but, as you said, she was caught off guard. Also, even if she had Rhaenyra captured, that wouldn't actually have made too much of a difference, at least not as long as her sons, her step daughters, Rhaenys and especially, Daemon were still around with their dragons. Also, if Rhaenyra got captured, she would either have been killed outright or worse. Season 1 made it quite clear that Alice t harbored more than just friendly feelings for Rhaenyra. This was one of the reasons why she was so hurt by Rhaenyra having lied to her about having slept with Cristen (Alicent having a crush on him as well didn't help, of course). And whatever had happened since, Alicent is not like Cristen. Had she raised the alarm on Rhaenyra I would have found this very much out of character. Regarding Rhaenis' escape last season, I think many people misunderstand what happened there. The Greens had basically kept her prisoner. Her main motivation was to escape, and do so with her dragon. If several dozen or more of 'small folk' got harmed or killed in the attempt didn't matter. Much as we might like Rhaenys as a character, she - as well as any other member of the ruling class (except Helaena!) have little to no regard for the common people. She knew the deaths of these people wouldn't start a war, but killing Aegon and/or anyone of the royal family most definitely would! The first brothel scene with Eamond and the madam illustrated this when she said to him that it was the ordinary people who suffer most from the decisions made by princes etc..
@aileenpi73
@aileenpi73 5 ай бұрын
To me it was Rhaenys’ character that got the short end of the stick and got dumb down this episode; with comments about Otto Hightower not approving an assassination attack on Rhaenyra, when we all know that is exactly what he wanted to do right after Vicerys’ death. Rhaenys sounds naive and very different from the Rhaenys that escaped Kings Landing and told Rhaenyra “the greens are coming for you and your children”. Also, the idea about speaking to Alicent is dumb. Rhaenys herself failed to convince Alicent right when the coup was happening and within the same sentence, where she claims Alicent could help bring peace, she implies that Alicent has no power to stop the actions she oermits the greens to commit. So her council, in times or war, has been quite lame. I have to wonder, if the throne were Rhaenys’ to fight for, would she be so slow to act?

I guess better than never and I have two more reviews to binge, and when is more Impression Blend never a good thing ☺ With regards to the episode and season, you know when you don't realize an episode has released or really care for what happens to the characters next, is my TLDR in a nutshell feel at the moment for this season. The main problem I feel is how this HOTD TV universe cripples the Dragons to such an extent cause they are unable to write humans who would actually wield or use such power wisely or foolishly and be treated by those who do not, and break from the norm standard political royal back and forth scripting present in other shows. GOT did the same with the White Walkers and the Dragons towards the end. P.S. On a unrelated note, will we be getting a review of The Bear S3 soon, Marianna?

The blockade is being created from Rhaenyra's side, so how would that keep Rhaenyra or her people from sneaking in? It is simply too difficult to protect an entire city the size of Kings Landing. Not with thousands coming and going every day (at least by land). Now the Red Keep is a different story. After the Blood & Cheese situation, I would expect the Red Keep to be on high security lock down.

Neither has or can make any rational decisions. Both are weak and don’t want their enemies to get hurt. Without trying, they are making the case for justifying Westeros not accepting a queen ruler. I didn’t like the line that Alys Rivers gives Daemon, I thought it was too on the nose and lame. I think something more like: “past deeds haunting you, your Grace?” would have been more mystical.

Agreed. Also I felt like the actress' delivery of the line was super flat...like meh I was kinda let down

2:38 Um... what's that off to the upper right of the scene... oh my.. it's a BURNING MILL. You didn't need to see the actual battle. You just needed to see the outcome of it. And that's what we got. They actually did it perfectly from the confrontation of the boys to the finality of that exchange. You didn't need a long drawn out gore fest to get the point across. So what the hell? So the show title was fine. And quit thumping the book. The book is good. The Dance of the Dragons section is one of the worst things ever written. It's terrible and I'm happy GRRM is rewriting and retconning that pile of shit with HotD. There is no "both sides" in the book any more as there is in the show. In the book Alicent is worse. She's older than Rhaenyra, sleeps with her grandfather to weasel her way in to court and then seduces her actual father to become Queen. It's not just Otto, it's both of them. The show tries to make a POS character in to something borderline sympathetic. But in both the show and book it's clear who is bad and who isn't. So if you're gonna raise that book, be honest about it, please. And pray that when this show is over, they continue with the first half of the book which is actually really really good.

Hmm... doesn't seem like you actually heard what I said. So, I'll keep "thumping the book", thanks

@@ImpressionBlend I did hear what you said. I actually do pay attention. The points you make seem like you were paying more attention to your phone than the show haha And any time anyone flashes the book to make any kind of point automatically send up a flag. Because not only is that section bad but contradicts it's self constantly. Like GRRM had no real care to be doing it. Thump the book all you want if it matters to you that much. You'd still be bitchin if they showed every second of the actual Battle of the Burning Mill. Because it likely wouldn't be book accurate. As if the book is book accurate hahaha

Damn, I must be really good at multitasking, if I got that much out of the episode while paying attention to my phone! Do continue with your fascinating assumptions though, they're hilarious))
