What is brillliant about the show so far is that every variation from the book can be interpreted as a commentary on the subjectivity of history, especially in bigotted societies. The brutality of the scene describes in the book vs what occurs in the tv shows, the fact that Rhaenyra did not actually order a child to be murdered, that was history ultimately written to paint her as a villain.
@ImpressionBlend5 ай бұрын
To be fair, she doesn't order it in the book either - it's fully Daemon's initiative in "Fire & Blood". But I totally agree, this is what I find so interesting about the books (multiple maesters' accounts in there already) and the way the show adapts it (either picking one, or making its own version of what led to an event) - it makes you question what goes on behind closed doors.

I loved how contemplative this episode was. There was no explosion of action and rage but that simmering, uncomfortable feeling that everything is about to go wrong really fast as the pieces on the board start moving.

Thanks for all the context to the episode. I definitely agree with the change from the books being a major letdown that lessens the impact of the final scenes of the first episode.

Love the new intro! The tapestry weaving together just feels so much more fitting for a show that is about a significant historical period that influenced the main series. History is being made in these episodes is the message you get. Plus is just looks a lot better than the cgi blood waterfall or whatever that was in S1 😂

It had its flaws but it was a beautiful first episode! And Emma D’arcy and Harry Collett!!!! Their interactions are beautiful and sent me into a cry fest! And although Emma doesn’t have children, the emotions were incredibly believable! It was beautiful to watch!

Great breakdown! I thought the look of the show was a big improvement. I have the feeling the second season will be better than the first. They did a ton of changes from the first season. They brought back director Alan Taylor from the original Game Of Thrones as a producer and director. He directed the first episode. As well as Melissa Bernstein (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) and Kevin De La Noy (Titanic, The Dark Knight ) as exclusive producers. So the first episode did feel a lot better than the first episode of season one.

Agree 100%. I'm afraid the exit of co-showrunner/director Miguel Sapochnik is going to hurt this show more than I thought it would. His characteristic raw, realistic and explicit way of directing gave the first season so many impactful moments, this was supposed to horrify the audience as we readers were horrified reading the book. I felt nothing while watching it. They are also continuing to make Daemon less evil to appeal to girls I'm afraid.
@ImpressionBlend5 ай бұрын
Judging by the interviews and behind the scenes for Season 1, Sapochnik wasn't one for understanding characters, I'm not too worried about his exit. As for Daemon - he's a book favorite for so many people, I don't think they're doing anything to his character that changes who he is. But they are filling out character depth and relationships for everyone, which can sometimes feel like it's softening them even though really it's just them filling in the gaps - the outcome is the same.
@airixxxx5 ай бұрын
@@ImpressionBlend I don't fully agree, they made Daemon order to kill Aemond instead of the children, and regarding M. Sapochnik the childbirths from the first season are all his I can only imagine what he would have done with blood and cheese, we'll probably having nightmares by now.
@ImpressionBlend5 ай бұрын
@@airixxxx To be fair, it's not really clear in the book what exactly Daemon ordered, since we don't have a direct quote there either other than "An eye for an eye, a son for a son. Lucerys shall be avenged", so there is plenty left for interpretation. Plus, the make Helaena choose and then do the opposite, so it seems like Daemon didn't really care. But fair, you could make the case that they just don't want to commit to full on depravity for him based on the choices they're making, which, honestly, I didn't see him as a villain in the book either.
@airixxxx5 ай бұрын
@@ImpressionBlend I know it wasn't clear, but in my mind was him. I don't consider him a villain either, there are not heroes and villains in this book, they are all horrible. My complain is that they flatten characters by upping the good or the bad knob to appeal TV audiences.

I completely agree with you that the Blood and Cheese scene was unnecessarily sanitized, diminishing the overall dramatic impact. This is supposed to land in a similar fashion as the Red Wedding, but fails to do so. Please trust the book material going forward. Very disappointing.

Loved it but I dont get how anyone knew what Aemond had done. They were up in the storm clouds and no-one else was there to witness the incident??.
@ImpressionBlend5 ай бұрын
I'm sure he owned up to it, plus Lord Borros and everyone at Storm's End saw the beginning of the interaction, then Aemond taking off after Luke... If Luke mysteriously went missing after that, Aemond would have still looked guilty. But that's exactly why I wish we got to see the interaction of Aemond getting home.
@dariamorgendorffer78133 ай бұрын
I didn't read the book! So for me, the ending was SCARY AND DISTURBING AS FCK! Even, now knowing the difference doesn't change the effect. Why? The sound effects, the actress playing Helena, her clear warning at the beginning, etc. Even if I read the book, it wouldn't matter. Because I always try to consider a book vs a movie or TV show as an interpretation of the source materials. Nothing will ever be a reproduction of the book. They are two different mediums, done by different artists. So, they will never be a recreation of the original material.

Sometimes I imagine how great it would be married to Marianna everyday watching movies and TV shows having lively conversations over dinner at five star restaurants. Then "Return of House of Dragon" comes along and realize our wedded bliss would end in acrimony with me shouting "I'm not watching this crap" and I'd be taking the bus back to Palookaville. @nonome82065 ай бұрын
@ImpressionBlend I don't think there's a maester conspiracy, there's just conspiring maesters. Everyone has an agenda and bias, sometimes guys collide for specific plots to get rid of problems but there's no grand scheme. It's neat and tidy to say "this institution is a borg of singular plot" but it's just a bunch of guys. Targs just constantly become a political problem and Maesters are irrevocably tied with politics.
