What Bass Fishing Hook to Use? Flipping Hook vs. EWG Hook

Fishing hooks have seen massive advancements in both quality and design, spurring new techniques altogether while also hooking and holding fish better than ever. Two of the most commonly used bass hooks are straight-shank flipping hooks and EWG (extreme wide gap) varieties. Pro bass angler Fletcher Shryock loves flipping and pitching more than any other technique and shares his opinion on when to use flipping hooks and when to reach for EWG varieties.

I use round bend for this baits, ewg for thick baits and flipping for heavy cover

I used to be all straight shanks for pitching but I’m leaning on ewgs in opener water more and more now. Every fish I get with an EWG takes me a second or 2 to unhook because the hook is so buried. If I’m using a straight shank a lot of times it’ll fall right out of there mouth. When I’m punching I only use straight shanks tho because I feel with that big weight I get better hook ups

You'll be happy with that decision 👊. Just keep in mind you'll need to keep the hook point buried in the plastic more as a flipping hook doesn't lay down on the bait like an offset hook when the hook point is pushed through the plastic.

Sweet set up. Use the same. But i get a issue when setting the hook with the EWG hook. The bait slides down to the bend of the hook and i miss the fish. Does not matter what bait i use. Really never had that issue before. The more i fish the more it happens. Any reason I'm doing something wrong?

Flipping hook for all Texas rigging. 4/0 for everything. Nuff said

I use a EWG to flip, works great, since my straight shanks are too big lmao

A lot of guys do like flipping with an EWG as much or even prefer them over straight-shank hooks. While we tend to agree with Fletcher, it really boils down to your own experience and confidence.
