Tyler, Great conversation between you and Rob HIll, very informative. What you call circle hooks are what I call J hooks. A true circle hook you do not need to set the hook the fish sets the hooks and are used more often that not for bait / live bait fishing.. A lot of fishers do use Octopus circle hooks for wacky rigs. Thanks for explaining the sizing system and how crazy it is. Robs additional information also makes it a little easier to understand. Can you do a similar video on swivels and snaps. That sizing system is even more confusing especially when you are buying a swivel snap combo.
@kenappleby84814 жыл бұрын
Wish I saw this last year when I was getting into bass fishing before having to figure out most of this (some things were still very helpful) on my own. This will indeed help others out. I did notice the video didn't show the example of "wacky" when you mentioned it and then the end of the video just cuts off. Still good information, ignore those saying otherwise. What you've mentioned in all of this lines up exactly to what I've found out for myself and same mentions from other pro anglers. Keep it up!

Those are not circle hooks.... circle hooks have a point that faces the shank. You do not set the hook on a circle hook or youll lose the fish. Those are just rounder hooks

@tylersreelfishing Regarding confusion with how sizes are numbered, it's related to gauge systems of measurement (which tend to be arbitrary but standardized) and makes sense in that context. For firearms, gauge is based on the amount of lead it takes to make a ball of a certain diameter. A 12 gauge shotgun has a barrel that's the diameter of a lead ball made from 1/12 lb of lead. A 20 gauge shotgun has a barrel that's the diameter of a ball made from 1/20 lb of lead. Since the gauge number is a denominator it gets bigger as the size of the object gets smaller The American Wire Gauge (AWG) system is based on the number of drawing operations it takes to produce a wire of a certain diameter. A thin wire has to be drawn/reduced more times than a thick wire, so a bigger number means a smaller wire. The hook sizes of 1/0, 2/0, 3/0 etc. are shorthand for 0, 00, 000, etc. so not a true switch in numbering. Now, as to why each different gauge system uses an ad hoc basis instead of just using a pre-existing measurement system (e.g. millimeters)? No idea.
@Matt-bg6kf Жыл бұрын
We could just use someone’s foot size to create a measurement called foot then divide it by 12 and call it an inch then take 3 of those feet and call it a yard. I think that would be more efficient than any system based on the number 10.

Awesome vid dude. I do notice a better hook up to land ratio with round bend hook vs a wide gap, I literally think it depends on the angler and how they set the hook. I also notice a higher snag a limb and lose your setup ratio with the round bends. That’s their Achilles’ tendon. I noticed this to be more of a problem this year as I’m learning how to skip cast. Seems like skip casting encourages the lure to pull loose from the hook.

Quick question, on baitcasters, why do they have two knobs ( for lack of a better word) for reeling in. In my experience in fishing you only use one. What is the reason for the second?
@kellymoore45174 жыл бұрын
The magnetic cast control knob on the left controls the spool during the cast. The spool tightner knob on the right side by the handle controls the spool at the end of the cast.
@TylersReelFishing4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I am not exactly sure. I think what Kelly was referring to is not the question you were asking. To answer your question, maybe it is because it gives you more of an option in case a fish fight gets you in a weird situation? Maybe two knobs allows you to grab it easier

This one missed the mark for me Tyler. I appreciate what you were doing, but as an experienced angler myself, I at times was like "What is he even talking about." Keep in mind I do realize everybody learns different. I think the paper approach was a good idea on your part, but you definitely displayed a lack of knowledge on your part in some of these. For example, Hook sizes work the same as wire sizes. 10 gauge wire is bigger than 12 gauge wire but 10/0 wire is smaller than 12/0. and yes the "0" is in fact a zero. I honestly think if you would have just bought some regular straight shank, round bend hooks from size 6 - size 5/0, size would have been made easy. From that point you could have jumped off into the different kinds of hooks and what they are used for. (Also I don't know for a fact what kinds of hooks Alton uses 90% of the time, but I'm willing to bet based on BassU videos it's probably offset round bend or round bend if you would ask him.) I appreciate what you were trying to do, I just think you didn't have enough info yourself about hook sizing and uses.

@robhill81974 жыл бұрын
@@TylersReelFishingIt's possible you just tried to put too much into this one video. Had you just stayed with hooks sizes and different types of hooks, that would have made for a good video. When you start trying to talk about superline hooks you would have to get into how line size, rod power/action, fishing conditions....etc dictate when to use those kinds of hooks vs regular hooks. Your treble section was really solid. The worm and circle hook sections though were off. As an example people frequently use an Aberdeen style hook (or something like it for Neeko rigging because you rig the hook point towards the nail weight because the fall if rigged properly can actually glide backwards and you want the point towards the nail weight when fishing it in cover, but you need to do a modified texas rig it if you're in there.

How so? I have been hard-core bass fishing for around 10 years of my life, and many of my mentors are professional anglers. Genuinely curious how this is incorrect information
@jjohn89894 жыл бұрын
Just some honest feedback /criticism here because you do put out some great info. A few points I noticed: overall your very rushed, slow down. If you wanted, add notes in comments "go to xyz time for ABC style" to help viewers get to what they need. Also a "worm hook" and "circle hook" are both their own style of hook in their own right, not a category. Better title to your papers (great way to display the hooks btw, very easy to see) would be "circular" and "common". You did get around to it later in video but you could have saved a lot of time and explanation if you started with a short over view of sizing (even "worm hooks" are available in smaller 'regular' sizes, not just x/0) and how there isn't any form of industry standard in how big each one is. Keep up the good work!
