Well that is not completely true tho, they didn't sacrifice any hair, but volunteers were going around all the hair salons and collected all the already cut off hair. Mauritius isn't full of bald people now.

I remember in the mid 2000s, we had a local oil spill in my city and all of the barbershops and salons were bagging up the hair trimmings to contribute.

It's no different than regulations for auto shops and their used motor oil or anything with chemicals. I think this has a connection to a project called Sustainable Salons. Hair salons collect their clippings and they get put into these booms instead of landfill. And in fact recycling or re-using is put in place for all the salon waste, from the foils to the shampoo bottles and pumps. Pet groomers can also sign up and pet clippings go to the oil spill booms too. My stylist can't stop raving about it!

These are great initiatives really… but kind of backwards in the approach. Don’t get me wrong, to get where we are now, the industrial revolutions really did their part. But now I suppose we can shift quite rapidly towards alternatives and yet the sunk costs and inertia of the fossil fuel industry/mafia is too much to do so. I personally think that prevention is far better than mitigation. Just my two cents 🙏🏼

theyve started a new way of doing it without the plastics of nets and tights. They mat the hair into cubes and 'rugs' and they take any hair bleached or natural!!

I'm a hairdresser in Australia and heard about this year's ago. There's a salon in the UK that now run a non profit collecting hair from all over the UK and making it into mats to absorb the oil. Each mat soaks up a massive amount of oil. This should be mandatory for our industry world wide to put the cut hair aside and get it picked up every 2 weeks or similar. Brilliant.

I've actually donated my hair toward that effort in the past. Whenever I get my hair cut that is of significant length, i get it measured. If it's long enough to donate toward wigs, I'll do that; if it fails to meet that length requirement- I donate toward the oil spill clean up efforts. The only exception is when I'm trimming off a couple centimeters of dead ends in my bathroom.

i believe they’ve switched from the hair booms to hair mats now, they have a machine that mats all the hair down into these flat sheets of hair that can cover more surface area!

This is a genuine thing, and I heard about it in the early 90s, iirc. It was absolutely fantastic, AND EVEN BETTER: You can PRESS THE OIL OUT and reuse the hair-booms! Process the oil to refine & clean it, and boom, you're back in business!

There’s a recycling company that a lot of hair salons use called Green Circle and they recycle everything. A lot of what we use in salons is unsafe for drains and doesn’t break down in landfill so all color tubes are recycled to make more, hair for oil clean up, cardboard and plastics to make new packaging materials. I’m not sure what they do with access color and bleach but they take that as well. Super great company!
