@@dreckigerdan3739I mean a hobby is just time investment and building skill. It does take skill to be a very good cook, especially for some of the quick thinking you have to do and cultural cuisines you have to memorize when creating unique recipes. Important steps to ensure healthy preparation, cutting techniques, timing. It is like an art form. Obviously, food prep exists so we don’t die and get proper nutrition for our bodies and muscle. But food is sentimental to people and even spiritual with how people fast. I try not to centre food or obsess, but it’s also good to not demonize it.

@pylaterreur
@pylaterreur 2 ай бұрын
My 2 cents on this would be, try to get a broader view of food, try new stuff, for example totally new dishes and/or ingredients. Try to seek quality, both ingredients wise and cuisine wise. I'm convinced once you develop that interest, fast food loses a lot of its appeal. If that's an option available to you, travel to some places where people aren't fat, if possible somewhere that has a climate allowing to produce its food locally, and live like a local with some money there, so you can experience centuries of culinary culture, and it won't necessarily be super expensive (I'm thinking Italy, France, or Spain, you can have very reasonably priced holidays if you pick time of the year and the right area, and you don't go for tourist traps/luxury hotels). Some places in Asia can also be a good way to enjoy authentic and local food. Bonus point with traveling to places abroad, you'll most likely be more active as you'll be walking here and there to visit, you'll not be as stressed as it's gonna be soms sort of holidays, you'll sleep better (as long as your holidays are long enough to overcome the initial jetlag), and that will contribute to weight loss.

@@Freeyourself206 yeah, once you get used to that it is hard to stop. An easier first step, if you haven’t tried this yet, would be to find desserts that are more satiating for the number of calories. Generally, high protein + high fiber + high fat is the most satiating. Cutting out the fat is better for calories, but it’d be hard to find a dessert that isn’t either high carb or high fat, and fat is a lot more satiating than sugar. One good example is greek yogurt with chia seeds (oats work too, but not as well) and chocolate protein powder or whatever flavor you want. Can add fruit and honey as well. Another option is a high-fiber cereal with a scoop of peanut butter. Trust me, if you haven’t tried it before, peanut butter makes most cereals twice as good, and much more filling.

@@Freeyourself206 I have the same problem. It could be that you're not eating enough carbs during the day and your body/brain interprets that as lack of sugar. Try increasing your carbs and try a small dessert (i.e. 2-3 cookies) after lunch.

He’s so right. Depending on things like meds, mood, headspace and whatnot, I’ve had vastly different hunger levels. There have been times I’ve almost obsessively binge ate, as if I just had to keep eating any food I could find around me. Other times I’ve started to eat a small bowl of food after eating nothing all day and still left it at the table cause I couldn’t eat any more even if I tried. It’s sad cause there’s so much shame projected onto people who struggle with their relationship with food. The idea is pushed that people have willpower over what they eat, and those who don’t eat properly are weak. But there are external factors that affect our bodies and our hunger levels that can be extremely difficult to overcome with willpower alone. And there are billion dollar industries working to profit off of that.
@mitsanut5869
@mitsanut5869 2 ай бұрын
Let's not start making excuses for fat people. First, they don't have willpower because they're lazy - that's how they started to gain the weight in the first place. Being lazy comes from very low social pressure to perform (in school, on the job, in sports, and create something meaningful, and of course, it gets them reinforced by eating the worst food possible that is full of garbage, poisons, chemicals antibiotics, you name it, but especially void of any nutrition. That's why those people are constantly hungry. They are malnutritioned and their body tells them eat more in hope it will receive some nutrition the next time. It's a vicious circle - but these people are NOT victims, just like drug addicts are not victims (as they're made to be so they can make another excuse to continue in their downward spiral). There's always a way to find inner strength in each of us to get to our goals. However, you have to want it bad enough. And apparently, too many don't. Believe me, I don't feel sorry for anyone like that. They don't deserve to be treated as victims.

Tbh I wouldn't want the palatability of my food to go down, I would prefer something that curbs hunger, or makes me feel saitated after eating a smaller amount. A big thing I struggle with is my stomach is just rumbling or I feel dizzy/light headed or sick if I don'teat often, I eat food and I'm just still hungry. So then I turn to snacks, but if I just had a lower appetite, then I wouldn't snack. It's incredibly frustrating because as a child up until I was like 19 I wasn't a massive food fan, I would have to remind myself to eat because I just didn't feel hungry that much. i also think that in a majority of places, towns are incredibly unwalkable. if you live in a big city where everything's condensed and connected, it isn't that big of an issue, but when the drive to your grocery store is 20 minutes versus a 40+ minute walk, you're gonna opt to take that car ride bc it's more convenient for time sake, especially when you're working 8+ hours a day
@vlada
@vlada 2 ай бұрын
Thats the cost of a country the size of continents. Towns are spread out across wide areas with no tall buildings and then you have tons of land to rhe next town while in minuscule countries like italy, greece, England the space in between towns/villages is ridiculously low. You are so, so right about time. Its the most precious commodity because you cant buy more. You work hard till 5 then you want to get home asap so you can live life from 6 to 11pm. I could take the kids to judo practice by bus (walk, two buses at non rush hours and then walk 8mins) but that takes us 50-60mins. I can take the car and be there in 12mins.. the difference between 2hrs and 24mins of travel is so ridiculous its laughable to even suggest it. The summers soccer practices are 15km by highway which is about 15-20mins. Ive no idea the bus time because its ridiculous distance and at least 3 buses. The winter dome for soccer is get on highway and youre there in in 12mins. By bus, its two buses plus a 20mins walk or three buses well over an hour and on weekends its even worse. Same math situation when we bring food to my mom and mother in laws. Not taking trays of food on two buses. Cars save time, lots of time, its not even close. And that time saved i can spend with my wife, kids and family. Its a very, very easy choice to make. Maybe if youre single and young (or unemployed) it's not a problem but everyone i know feels the same way about not having enough time when they come back from work.

@@vlada Small correction here, the size of the continent has nothing to do with the walkability of cities, but car-centric design does. Before the Car, cities and town were pretty walkable because that's how you had to live to get what you need. You can still see it in old city district that were not destroyed. The walkability in those is great. The car permitted people to go great distances in a short amount of time which allowed for greater sprawl with less density. This in turn made "utility" walking difficult and implementing good and reliable transit hard to financially justify. I do agree with you that the only way to live in North America right now is by car. It's a massive time saver and all other solutions are currently not usable in a grander scale. I just wanted to correct the notion that the size of the continent is the cause of it because it makes trying to make our cities and town more walkable seem impossible while it definitely isn't. Cheers!

The thing i've always said is that if Governments Globally HEAVILY subsidised healthy foods, fruit, vegetables etc. while simultaneously HEAVILY taxing unhealthy foods, processed foods etc. to the point that Healthy options are cheaper than Processed unhealthy options, then people will eat healthier. Like you can walk into a supermarket now, spend maybe £3 and have incredibly unhealthy food from the frozen section that is awful. But to make a meal that is healthy for £3 is more difficult and takes longer, so they reach for the unhealthy option. My parents pretty much worked around the clock when I was growing up and I ate alot of unhealthy, quick, convenient food as a result as they were exhausted to be fair. Now as an adult, I avoid that shit like the plague! I make 90% of my meals from scratch, with the only things that I don't make from scratch being things like Pasta or Bread. If I want to make a Pasta sauce I make it from scratch and it's infinitely healthier

Prices definitely play a role: Soft drinks, fast food and sweets are often much cheaper than fruits, vegetables and high-quality bread, taste great and are ready for consumption instead of needing to be prepared and cooked. There should be a sugar/fat tax which can then substitute the prices for raw ingredients. There are needs to be better education for parents and teachers regarding healthy drinks/foods: Too many people fall for the "children's meal" tactics that some establishments and stores use by feeding them and getting them addicted to nutritional garbage. Caprisun, Kellogg's cereals, Kinder Pinguí and others are clearly marketed towards children, just like there are restaurants whose "children's menu" consists of unfrozen chicken nuggets, chips and ketchup. None of that is food and the caretakes should make sure that people get actual food from early on.

The only exercise I got was in PE at school and it was a "thing you have to do" and was always presented as a competition (huge demotivator for me: I do poorly there's mockery; I do well it makes someone else feel bad which was arguably worse). The biggest hurdle for a lot of people is by far cost and time. If you're working to the bone daily for low pay and the choice is buy several raw often expensive ingredients and then prep them and cook them for a meal that to your tastes is not as good as a quick drive thru. The path of least resistance kicks in as you're already tired, you're already broke and raw chicken is 18 dollars for a breast and a half, suddenly that 5 dollar grab bag of food that's terrible for you looks so appealing. Speaking from experience I didn't start losing weight and getting in shape until I was making more money and ended up in work from home job. The time sink of long hours+gym+shopping+prep+family+sleep can burn you out so fast when you're struggling.

I buy spinach, fresh veggies, frozen blueberries, rolled oats, canned beans, canned soup, hot sauce, cottage cheese, salsa, cheddar cheese, and lots of whey protein. You want to know what the longest "prep" I have is? Throwing frozen blueberries and some water in the microwave for four minutes. I sometimes make more complex meals but not that often. You are making excuses. Going to a fast-food place or restaurant to buy crap is more expensive and time consuming. Sure, a quality container of whey protein is $30 now but that can last MANY meals. A single cheap fast-food meal will likely run you $10 or more, and a Starbucks can also run up to $10. Rolled oats and beans are stupidly cheap. Huge numbers of Americans drink a daily Starbucks that is often 1,000 calories. I took a bunch of different beans, and some quality salsa mixed them together and added hot sauce. This plus whey protein shakes with water was my lunches for the week. Average cost of $3 to $5 each day. The only downside was somewhat higher sodium, but I drink lots of water and sweat/pee that out. For breakfast I eat rolled oats, frozen blueberries, a protein shake plus a small handful of nuts. For lunch I eat beans, salsa, hot sauce, and now that I'm home a quality shell and a little cheese plus a protein shake. I use very strong cheddar, so I don't need much for the flavor. A single bar will last a couple weeks. For dinner I eat spinach, veggies, maybe a soup plus a protein shake and maybe some low butter popcorn. If I want a snack after say I work out I eat some frozen pineapple or cottage cheese. For cheat meals I order out once per week and eat a normal amount. I may also cheat a bit on vacations. People want excuses to eat shit so they can absolve themselves of blame. Eating out is not cheap, grab bags aren't cheap. They're just tastier because of the more fat and sugar. People also eat a bunch of unsatiating snacks because they want the dopamine fix. Lean protein and carbs with quality fiber is vastly more satiating than that crap. Eating out and eating tons of junk food wastes more time and costs way more. Also, so many people drink a lot of alcohol which is insanely expensive (especially when ordered out). Alcohol is as bad as sugar metabolically and does other shit to the body yet alcohol consumption is VERY high even in poor areas. Tobacco is even worse and does nothing good, but people spend lots of time and money on that shit. It's about dopamine fixes and making excuses so people can give into dopamine fixes without guilt.

yes we have had (generally speaking over socio-ecomomic groups and time) enough FOOD... but now we have a surplus of CALORIES (via processed foods laden with flavorings, fats, etc) with less physical work required to acquire them - and this is likely coupled with cracks in the social support and mental health networks wich then leaves a large part of the population eating their feelings and/or completely uneducated about nutrition... but... It really hasn't. The first McDonalds technically was in 1940, and the company "McDonalds" didn't exist as we know it today until 1955. And they were on the cutting edge of this sort of system. It has only ballooned in the last 30 years with the dozens of brands all of which layering right on top of each other. And that variety is part of the issue, if you live in an urban area (which, statistically, most people do) you can cycle through 21 companies for the full week of meals having something from a different spot each meal.

I never ate a lot and was always skinny and active. But after getting ill i simply stopped wanting to eat. I wouldn't feel hungry until the evening so i ate nothing until dinner at 6 pm, had a small dinner like eat half of the plate and would snack before bed. Now i have managed my diet and exercise through seeing plenty of doctors, dietitians and physios. Physio helped the most. Now i eat small amounts but regularly and more at dinner time. I've never had an appetite and always functioned fine but now i actually have good days because i consciously paid attention to what i was eating, how much i was eating, when i was eating and how i felt when i ate certain foods.

Eating is one of my hobby, that's why I made cooking another one of my hobby. The two go surprisingly well together!

i cannot stress how much i adore food. our finest achievement as a species is turning every corner of the wild into something delicious, consumable, and artistic. As a painter plays in color and depth, i play in flavor, texture, and aroma. i'm fat as fuck and it'll never change.

After 6 years of living in America, I have successfully transitioned into eating out daily and constantly thinking of food when I wake up and after work. Needless to say I've put on a few lbs in the last year that I have stated to notice this 😢

I was always pretty slim and fit, but then a bunch of stuff happened in my life, and I got really depressed. Eating just became the easiest way to lift my short term mood, and because I was depressed I needed it constantly. So eating to feel better is really important thing to watch out for…

My wife and I love tasty well made foods and good wines. That said, we’re over 70 and want to stay healthy through proper diet and exercise. First thing, we intermittent fast. Eat after 10 am and before 6 pm. We limit alcohol. Next, our primary diet consists of high quality proteins, organic vegetables and fruit. We eat only twice a day, with an occasional mid afternoon sugar free snack. We use stevia, monk fruit, alulose or erythritol for sweetener. We work out in a local gym three days and at home two days a week. A variety of weight lifting and cardio exercises. I’ve had heart issues and diabetes in the past. Now off insulin and any other diabetic meds, I have eliminated most heart meds. My physic is better than since my 20s with a 12.8% muscle mass. My wife lost 50 lbs and went from a size 14 to a size 7. We both look and feel great! I’ve lost over 35 lbs since starting this lifestyle two years ago. My point is, most Americans have no idea how to combat obesity. What I’ve shared above is one answer.

One thing I appreciate is when an American talks to British people, knowing to use words like “crisps” is such a small thing but it shows respect and awareness of our culture. Such a small thing, but a cool thing.

I'm 100% part of that last group. Eating is such a chore.

I will sometimes forget to eat a meal, skipping lunch inadvertantly. Other people are flabbergasted by this.
