Such wise words, more people need to listen to this video. I'm British and have had to really separate my own cultural identity from the British State, whose actions I mostly am ashamed of, as I know many Israelis are today. But people also need to be helped to go beyond the narrative pushed by their media and their education system. As a child I was never taught about the dark side of British history, and I only learned because I'm married to an Irish man, whose grandfather fought for Independence, and work in a very international setting where I have friends from India, Kenya, Pakistan...I'm still shocked when hear many people in comment threads saying they're actually proud of the history of the British Empire. I just feel disgusted. I think of all the many wonderful jewish people I've known and loved in my life, and the rhetoric of Netanyahu or his genocidal cabinet have literally nothing to do with them in the same way that Suella Braverman's attacks on the homeless or migrants do not represent me.

I love you dear Dr. Gabor Mate, and I've never considered mere criticism of Israel to be "anti-Israel" or antisemitic per-se. Israel is the only country in the Middle East that _can_ be criticized - and that's the point! That's also a point that hundreds of journalists who recently signed a letter accusing Israel of being anti free speech and targeting journalists missed. They missed what free speech means: being able to criticize a country from within and without facing persecution, like the thousands of Israelis who protested judicial reforms. These journalists erroneously misinterpreted free speech to mean that you go in the middle of a war zone, you position yourself in buildings which the Israeli government has repeatedly warned would be targeted, you say things that Hamas wants youto say (rather than criticize Hamas from within Hamas territory) and then if an Israeli bullet hits you, you tell the international community that Israel "targets" journalists and "opposes" free speech! We need to understand what free speech is: you first need to have a legitimate government and security and then use that to protect free speech. Once you are in the unfortunate situation of being in the middle of a war, free speech doesn't have much meaning. First of all, there is no such thing as free speech under Hamas! These journalists apparently don't see this point! And second, both parties are trying to win the war. Even "freedom to live" is by definition not automatically granted, let alone "free speech!" People make the same mistake about journalist Shireen Abu Akleh who was shot: not realizing and recognizing what constitutes a murder investigation. First, you need to have one legitimate body "governing" the territory, which means having full unobstructed authority to conduct a proper legitimate murder investigation with complete and unobstructed access to all the evidence. I've been trying to find out the answer to a very simple and trivial question: did Israeli officials ever get to see the body of Ms. Shireen Abu Akleh? Certainly according to GPT4, the answer seems to be no, never. It's a simple question. Apparently Palestinians took out the bullet, showed it to everyone, accused Israel of having fired it, and Israel said, okay we apologize!!! I don't know, perhaps you can tell me exactly what happened! So much for the idea that all Jews are lawyers!!! Israel needs a better lawyer before admitting to anything! People don't understand what a murder investigation is! You need a legitimate body that is responsible for the investigation, and the evidence needs to be completely public and available. That's the difference between a military and a police force: one executes a war and the other executes a murder investigation. (It's easier to comment on genocide because rather than a single killing, there are often dozens of thousands or more reliable witnesses who will talk about what happened. But a supposed murder investigation is much more complicated and needs to be conducted fairly and very carefully. You can criticize Israel all you want. I know you are a kind human being and you care about Palestinians. I am also by no means trying to push the point that Israel hasn't done anything wrong, and I certainly would like to see things like accusations of settler violence to be examined properly. However, we cannot solve the problems of this region without addressing systemic problems. Unfortunately, questions such as Palestinian statehood, home constructions, and settlements are more complicated than we can discuss in these KZbin comments. I have to leave that for another time. I recognize your pain, and sincerely hope to pick up the rest of this conversation another time, soon. Please remember: we are not saying that any criticism of Israel is antisemitism. However, antisemitism is very frequently the motivation behind the fact that Israel is solely and singularly singled out for criticism while countless nations in the Arab League get a completely free pass for treating generations of Palestinians born on their soil as second class citizens (and that's an understatement because most people wouldn't even want to be a first class citizen in many of these Arab nations!). But nobody talks about the fact that 20% of Israel's population are basically the happiest Muslims in the Middle East and they don't want to give up their Israeli passports. Often this kind of double standard is motivated by antisemitism. You, on the other hand, single out Israel for criticism for a different reason: you love it and you feel that your Jewish heritage and your connection to the Holocaust gives you a responsibility to criticize Israel and it makes you feel very bad that this is somehow "done under your name." We must find solutions to the systemic problems in the region, we agree on that, I believe.

Hi Dr. Gabor, it will be very interesting to see the psychological effect on kids growinp up having a negative perception of all the non-muslims, especially the animosity towards the Jewish people since ancient times and that hasn't disappeared in modern times, as a consequence of Islam teaching, kids watching TV shows that are very religious and political for kids their age, where they learn to view Israelites/Jewish as criminals and evil people, about how being a martyrs and die for war is more important than peace, than having compassion, than being tolerant towards everyone even though they have different beliefs or skin color. We need a study about the effects of the Palestinian people being taught and continually told that Israel doesn't exist and it shouldn't be recognized - the Muslim world is very disengenuous towards this when talking about occupation. I think we should explore the psychological effects on kids growing up under these very rooted ideologies in the Middle East. I'm sorry if my comment offends people, I really don't mean to. I'm just shocked that people can't or won't acknowledge that this conflict has a heavy religious weight. It's the elephant in the room, but I think it is important to notice it and stop denying it.

I totally agree! I did not know there is a difference. AND many more do not know. I thought what Israel has been and is doing is jewish. Oct 7 on, I learned a lot (or better yet, I had to unlearn a lot of brainwashing and bias). We are all human and feel the same pain and suffering. As an Indian surgen said, when he opens up people, they are all the same under the skin. EVERY life is prescious and every human that is killed (civilian, soldier, from ANY background, color, nationality, etnicity, religion), has loved ones who will have to mourn the loss of their loved ones. That is sad, no matter what. Israel is sneering holocaust and is mocking its survivours. And I agree, the best people to clear the name of the jews are jewish people. And now the rate of change moves from a linear increases to exponential rates of change. Our task is to re-define our species as we re-discover our planet. We must relearn the rules of species survival. We would be wise to avoid violent stresses - instead work to renew extensive co-operation. And keep our attention on our changing environment.

Good that this gets cleared up so well. It is a very weird propaganda strategy from the government in Israel to counter criticism on their actions that kill many civilians in Gaza and are shocking people over the globe, and try to attack that criticism by calling those critics anti-semitic. By doing that they both endanger the Palestinian and Jewish people. I am so happy that there are Jewish people speaking out against the horrific genocide/ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian people at the moment initiated by the Israeli government. Jewish people can be African (eg. Hebrews), they can be Middle Eastern, many are White (Ashkenazi). There are even Asian and South American (Amerindian) Jews. This is why I am confused when Gabor conflates anti-semitism with racism. Jews are essentially an Ethno-Religious group. Judaism is a religion. Gabor is definitely right that the actions of the current government are not the fault of ordinary Jewish people and they shouldn't be blamed for it, especially if they do not support the actions. Having said that the way Gabor constantly plays Black people off against Whites is not a nice thing to do. In this video he plays the Europeans off against Muslims despite the fact that Europeans warmly welcomed them as refugees. The word "Anti-Semitism" seems to have a very nebulous meaning and is frequently used to shut down legitimate concerns. Gabor says "antisemitism has got nothing to do with Jews, in the sense that it doesn't originate from anything Jews do or don't do". I'm not sure what definition he is using but most criticism is a direct result of actions. He then goes on to pathologize the people he disagrees with. It can't be found here but the American Jewish statesman Benjamin Freedman offered a much less ambiguous description of this complex issue. I don't understand why we still use the terms Semite and antisemitism in this day and age. In 2023 we should be way past the pseudoscientific racial categories of Semites, Hamites and Aryans. Even back in biblical times people were travelling and moving around and intermarrying and converting from one religion to another. So there's no way that any race, religion or culture has remained intact.or can trace its lineage back to one source. Instead of dismantling this entire imperialistic colonialist supremacist ideology, Zionism decided to spread the virus to the Middle East, and find its own "untermensch". There are non-Jews who are descendents of Shem, Jews who aren't, Anti-Zionist Jews, Non-Jewish Zionists, etc. etc. If there's any hope for actually eradicating religious and racial hatred and discrimination and re-educating the masses to move towards living together in a just and equal society, it's imperative to carefully examine the vocabulary we're using and the implication it carries with it.

I can’t speak for Gabor but I can say that this paradigm of framing the brutal Israeli response as the only alternative to capitulation is deeply flawed. It assumes that any victim of unlawful acts is entitled to carry out anything, including verifiable war crimes and crimes against humanity, in the name of retaliation and security. What if that principle was generalized? What if Palestinians were granted the right to use as much force as they saw fit to retaliate against decades of Israeli crimes where the death tolls, including women and children, were greater than those in Oct 7? Or to protect themselves from the all too real threat of literal annihilation at the hands of Israelis with the backing of world super powers? You don’t have to have the correct answer to know that that one is wrong.

I appreciate his thoughts but there may be some flaws. Russia didn't want to invade Ukraine, they just wanted a fast intervention and they wanted peace since then. A large part of Ukraine is historically Russian, a much larger part that Russia annexed and Russians are oppressed in Ukraine. While j.ws, all of them invaded Palestine, althought the j.ws had nothing to do with Palestine. There are different opinions in Russia, but in Israel maybe 1 out of 100 person is pro-Palestine (and don't even count the ultraorthodox anti-Zionists). If anti-semitism is a sickness, then hundreds of very successful people were sick, like Napoleon, Luther, Kant, Voltaire, Schopenhauer, etc. And then all Palestinians are sick or maybe Is.rael did something wrong to the Palestinians?

Jews aren't even a "race." They're a religious/cultural group. There's all sorts of "races" among Jews just as there are among Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, etc. Sticking to the Torah, there would have had to be a "race" of Jews before they even came to exist (Jews means "the people chosen by God"). There wasn't. Furthermore, the closest markers of "race" in the Torah for the ancient Hebrews was either Egyptian or Kushite (Ethiopian), going by the context and mentions... In truth, the very concept of "race" didn't exist throughout biblical times. Never. "Race" as a classification system is extremely new in the history of humanity. It's also extremely loose, poorly defined, and arbitrary. A single family can be considered a "race." Many sub-groups within the "race" categories can themselves be "races." There are lots of groups who are actually outside of the settled (false) "race" categories. It's nothing more than a social construct. The few edge cases where it can be useful can easily be replaced by simple, more specific systems that fit those contexts.
