Hi agypsyrover, I understand your perspective. How would you feel if someone held a flame to your finger? Your skin would feel hot. Now, if you began thinking about your last vacation, would your skin stop feeling hot? Of course not. Simply because flame creates hot. Now, if you are in a "stressful situation", and you begin thinking about your last vacation, will you still have stress? No, your stress would be gone. If all it takes to stop feeling stressed is to simply think about something else, then it can't be the situation that causes stress, but only thoughts. Some people are more or less stressed than others in the same situation simply because each person has different thoughts about the situation.

Noah Elkrief Again, I'm going to bring up something physical that can't be seen and might not seem real if you are over-focusing on thoughts as the cause of all "negative" emotions. Withdrawal from certain drugs (both prescription and illicit) boosts stress hormones. You can't see this and yet it's happening. I've managed to come off or reduce many prescription drugs. Talk about hell on Earth! The doctors never told me these drugs are physically addictive. I cut down on benzodiazepines by 25% (NOT recommended; it was forced on me) and my stress levels went through the roof. Even though I knew that withdrawal from Klonopin was the initial source of my stress, my mind immediately latched onto thoughts that are associated with stress. This is yet another example of a non-visible physical problem _causing_ thoughts that increase stress. Even if the thoughts are stopped completely, the stress hormones remain. The reduction in thoughts can be accomplished by substituting another drug. It may partially alleviate the stress, but it can't stop the body's reaction to a sudden fluctuation of psychoactive chemicals created by pulling the plug on a psychoactive drug. There could be other physical problems that are causing stress, some of which have yet to be identified by medical science. I'm finding your videos very interesting and helpful, but your focus on "thoughts" as the cause of everything is a bit too simplistic. On various videos, I've shared some of my experiences with illnesses causing depression (anxiety, too). Of course thoughts and illnesses feed off one another. An illness that causes depression can make the mind gravitate toward depressing thoughts which then make you sicker. It can go the other way, too. Thoughts create depression that leads to physical illness which leads to depression, etc. It's a vicious cycle that can leave one wondering which came first. Finding ways to deal with thoughts is a good way to interrupt the cycle, but it isn't complete unless physical illnesses are also addressed. Like many people, I question the efficacy and need for antidepressants and other psychoactive drugs, but due to my own experiences with hypothyroidism, diabetic ketoacidosis and other serious illnesses that caused or worsened my depression and anxiety, I am unwilling to completely throw away the physical component. There very well _could_ be chemical imbalances that cause or exacerbate these disorders. Right now, I feel the proof is lacking, but making the pendulum swing all the way back to "it's all in your mind" doesn't seem like the way to go. In the meantime, your videos _are_ helping me. I just think a little balance would be a good idea. If I hadn't gone to the doctor when I was depressed due to diabetic ketoacidosis, I would be dead. There would be no "me" to address the thoughts that cause depression and anxiety. A little "Hey, maybe you should go to the doctor and make sure nothing is physically wrong" wouldn't be misplaced. :)

I also think that he oversimplifies things. As you mentioned, low blood glucose level is one of physiological causes of stress. There are others. Noah addresses only stress and suffering caused by thoughts, and since they cause lots of stress, I think he contributes much.

I have been experimenting with this. I have a new mantra in my life: "my calm is my strength",I say that often because I want this to be as natural to me as breathing. I want this to be my anchor. My goaI is to be in the middle of a "storm" (that is whatever problem or perceived problem applicable) and feel at utter peace. We are indeed slaves to our thoughts, in fact for most us we are ruled by our faulty thinking.Part of my practice is self soothing exercises that consist of relaxation, stretching, visualization and breathing exercises. In 3 months I have seen a remarkable difference. So I am grateful to stumble upon this piece because it confirms that what I have been doing makes sense. And it's so simple, in fact I thought it was so basic I never thought it would work at all.

this might sound silly but sometimes the right decision is to choose the wrong one. it's all about making the 'wrong decision', yes the wrong one. its not about making the right decision , it's all about making the wrong one haha :D because wrong situations teach us what is wrong and what is right and how to deal with future wrong decisions.

I like your videos Noah but some aspects of this don't seem right. The fact that every person is not stressed in the same environment doesn't mean it is not the environment. Some people are more resilient to stressful situations or maybe more experienced etc. Stressful situations are real - look at lab studies that are done on cortisol where rats are put in purposefully made stressful situations. There are stressful situations Noah. It can't be discounted as just thoughts.

I really like your videos and I´m sure they´ve helped and will help a lot of people...just one quick tip though. Maybe try and get to the point a little faster instead of giving a lot of examples for the same thing because it gets a little repetitive then. No offense though, you´re really good at what you´re doing :)

Not that I don't like and appreciate your words because they make a lot of sense and are helpful. But I feel your philosophy can be a bit overly and impractically simple. Your common theme in all videos is that "our own thoughts, not outside events control how we feel and the negative emotions we experience ". Therefore we can control how we feel and avoid the negative emotions by avoiding the negative thoughts and recognizing that they aren't real. You also say we shouldn't have fear or anxiety of upcoming events that we believe would cause us pain because we don't know if it will cause pain, but may ultimately turn out to be a good thing. My only issue is while you're correct it may "ultimately " turn out good, it's likely still gonna cause pain initially. So that pending event, an even we may have no control over is causing the negative thought, which causes the negative emotion. So in reality the event IS causing the negative emotion albeit indirectly. The fear of getting fired from your job will cause a very real and justifiable level of anxiety and stress and ACTUALLY getting fired will hurt for a while when it happens, even though it may (and likely I believe) work out for the better in the end. By the way this was a real life experience for me and it DID work out for the better LATER, but hurt like hell initially. I guess my overall point is if you're going through a challenging time and you anticipate negative events pending, it's almost impossible to not have fear, anxiety or stress for what you KNOW will hurt at least initially .

+Timothy “Midnight Pallette” Showers .. well realise that the only reason something happened bad to you is that you didn't sit down with the problem, your perception of whatever it is that makes you depressed is the only thing that makes you feel bad. 1- is there really nothing i can do? 2- should i beat up on myself for not doing something that I never understood to do? i never had the experience i need or the practice or the environment to fully explore and experience who i am? Because I did what i believed was best for me at the moment it was out of control, at least i did what I knew I believed was right for me at the moment, now since I realised it i will put some time in doing what I can see feels good and exciting for me now. 3- What is it that I can do or remove that will increase my good feelings about myself at this moment? can I stop watching violent or depressing tv shows that make my thoughts filled with negativity about my situation? Can I stop eating unhealthy food? can I focus on positive thoughts? Can I let go of toxic unhealthy angry people who want to control me ? 4- what can i realise was in the past and is not active anymore in this moment? What can I feel about the current situation is only a reflection of somethign I experienced in the past and probably will not be as bad as in the past or probably not even be there at all? 5- What can I spend my time doing that will help me appreciate how sweet life is? Instead of worrying about the situation you are in now focus on how other people have gone through the same thing and life was able to get them out of it succesfully, as they help themselves, life helps them. Know that you are capable of getting what you want to get because its only natural, its something that works for all of creation.

Am hindu and from india, Negative sexual thoughts ruin me and make me depressed, I cant speak about this to my parents to stop this, I dont want to speak about this with my friends since i fear that they would get the same feeling when they worship. I fear to god and i punished me self by hitting with knifes in my hand and scissors and the worse if i make mistake i promise to god that i eat shit and i do. Also when i walk i feel if i go this way i wont think about bad thought. i feel bad that even tried to sucide by taking toilet cleaners and insect killers. I would say, stop feeling guilt for anything that you desire. As long as it doesn't hurt other people and of course, yourself. Forgive yourself for all your past indiscretions, because that was how you were feeling at the moment and you acted based on that time's knowledge and personal experiences. You might want to try hypnotherapy. (It's 100 times more effective than psychotherapy, for ANY given condition or matter.) This method is how I escaped my own guilt and awkwardness. If you'd like to research how other souls were benefited, you could read up on Michael Newton, Brian Weiss or Roger Wolger's work.
