Kanes point on Collingwood is absolutely spot on, we’re so far off it that selling off any remaining assets we have for Houston isnt going to win us a flag anytime soon anyway, as good as he is we’re just way too old with ONE genuinely good player under 23 which is seriously alarming

Have a look at what happened to Geelong. They won a flag with the oldest list in the comp, missed finals the year later and almost made the grand final against the team that won the grand final by ten goals. They were an inch away from another flag. We could follow a similar path. We pick up perryman and Houston, have a big pre season after we had the shortest pre season in history last year and go again. Then we pick up Thomas macguane in next year's draft to help set up our future with Nick

@damobax8344 don't really get what you're trying to say. Both teams won a flag initially. Collingwood still have a bunch of stars that were way off last year. Just like how many Geelong stars were off in 2023. Imagine if Darcy Moore, quaynor, Schultz, potentially Houston and crisp can all have big years.

Why do you get ''compensation'' if a free agent leaves? Free agent means his contract is over so the player has no further obligation to the club. Tom Barras is still contracted but he is going to Hawthorn (apparently) so why arent West Coast entitled to a compensatory pick? Yet Saint Kilda get one when an uncontracted player leaves? Not only that, but its a top five pick now... what nonsense is that? AFL rules make no sense and frankly are a shambles. I hope a modern day Kerry Packer comes in , takes the game over and runs it the way it should be run. Its a literal clown show at the moment.

Players requesting a trade should get less power in deciding where to go.
@ramen4777
@ramen4777 Ай бұрын
I agree with some of what you’re saying, but you seem confused. The reason West Coast don’t get a compensation pick is because Hawthorn will send West Coast picks, players or both, they will get something for Barras. Uncontracted players aren’t tied to the club anymore, meaning they can just sign wherever they want, If Battle signs with Hawks, Hawks don’t need to do anything, it’s a free pick-up because he isn’t contracted. The AFL offer compensation picks to help clubs stay afloat if they’re constantly having players just walk out for nothing. I don’t think compensation picks should be a thing at all, AFL is the only sport I can think of that does this, if a player is uncontracted and leaves, you’ve just gotta deal with it, hand outs aren’t necessary.
@DontWorryBeHappy75

I think the original concern about free agency was quality players going to top clubs for a chance at premierships, hence the compensation to help replace talent drain from a struggling club. I don't mind it, but it should not be so generous. Because it's conditional on a teams ladder position, a decent player getting overpaid gives a very high pick to a poor club, but a player like Buddy leaving the Hawks got 17! Maybe compo should start at 2nd round at best
@ShoeSnatchinWilly

Because good players all flood to currently successful or large Victorian clubs which harms equalisation, so compensation helps even things out.

Cornes would have Collingwood draft two players with the pick 13 received from Gold Coast and pick yet to be determined to be received from Port Adelaide for Richards on the basis that they will make a difference in two or three years time. The problem with his argument about a core of players is that Martin, Cotchin, Reiwoldt etc weren't under 23 in 2017 and neither were Franklin, Lewis, Mitchell and Roughhead in 2013. Elite players in a team in the premiership window are usually in the 26 to 30 range.

@74_pelicans Adams was also injured. He made the comment in regards to behaviour. Oscar (or even McStay) held themselves to a higher standard IE team players. Adams lost his rag midweek when he was told he wouldn't play. I think Noble is a little ungrateful to a club that drafted him when 17 other clubs didn't rate him.

Compensation has to stay because its a equalisation league. Media make it sound more complicated then it is, not hard to work out how a pick is given lots of $$ plus lengthy contract equals straight after your first pick. The fact that the teams that are losing players to F/A just happens to be lower clubs which is why compo picks are so high righlty or wrongly.... should be more performance based compensation if you average out to be in your clubs top 10 B & F finish then end of first round compensation Aversge 11 to 20 end of second round the rest end of 3rd round

Losing Frawley affected Melbourne much worse than Hawthorn losing Buddy. I agree that the free agency needs to be changed but this isn't the example that shows it. Remember the Hawks won a couple of flags after Buddy left whereas the Dees were cellar dwellers for years after Frawley left.

Actually a very left field option is to get Longmire and have Nicks as his senior assistant, they have a good previous relationship. Of course that only works if Nicks is happy to take that role, and there isn’t a core group of players wanting Nicks to go.

Crows need to get rid of Nicks , like most Crows coaches he thinks his list is better than it is . Loyalty to worn out flogs is not something that should be part of a modern clubs repertoire . Players certainly are not loyal . Look at teams developing young lists atm , they are going to be dangerous AF in coming years . Eagles hung on to old washed up players way too long and have hurt their future just like Crows and now Pies are . I get it if you have won 3 flags in 6-7 years but Pies dads army aint winning any flags in near future

Kane really has a blind spot for Collingwood, goes on about players under 23 forgetting 2 of those players that would've been on that list were Ginnivan and Henry who were both able to move to different clubs and excludes players like Perryman who's the perfect aged free agent. On top of that he doesn't know how they unlock the Houston trade but if you look at for more than 5 seconds you could see a 3 way trade where Richards and Noble are traded out of Collingwood they bring in Houston and pick 13 and Lukosius go to PA. This is just a rough theory but it's a hell of a lot more than the Kane can offer.
