Nevada and Colorado we’re pronounced with the ah sound or closer to the Spanish pronunciation until the 1870s when a large population from the Northeast migrated there during the gold rush and they pronounced them with short hard A vowel sound which led to its modern-day New England sounding pronunciation of their states.

That's how topsail is normally pronounced in English, not just the placename - "top + sail" is just weird/wrong, "top-sill" is normal. Lots of sailing words aren't pronounced like they're spelled. Exactly like forecastle/fo'c's'le is pronounced something like fox+sill, not "four castle."

I drove over the Arkann-SAW River on my way to Leadville, passed over the Ar-kansas River again on my way home to Hutchinson Kansas.
