It really is about budget. In 2008 I bought the Vivaldi La Spaziale S1. It's a great dual boiler machine that directly heats the brew group, has an OPV, temperature control, dry steam forever, but it was expensive. It's plumbed into the wet bar in my home theater. Now I'm looking for a much less expensive machine for the kitchen. It's hard to get too excited about machines that require temperature surfing and do not have volumetric dosing, etc. It all seems too much. I 'm an electronics hobbyist. I think I would be tempted by the Silvia and mod it. But in the end it's still not going to be a La Spaziale.

If I was buying today it would probably be a GO. I want good consistant espresso without having to faff around in the morning. As it is there's a 20yr old Silvia with a PID on my kitchen bench, which I've owned from new. I've done all the services on it. Why Rancilio didn't do a PID version of the Silvia themselves 15 yrs ago is beyond me. The PRO X is over double the price here in NZ.

Love my go the fast heat really does work and the pf gets really hot quickly after a flush. If it had pre-infusion it would be the end of conversation for a single boiler. Silvia is great but it has been surpassed by the go and the Silvia x by the move imo.

I believe the Go is based on the ECM Casa V, which probably bodes well for the longevity of the machine. Although anyone's guess on how long the electronics is going to last.

My Silvia needs service, and I hate its not having a PID. I will likely replace it with the Profitec Go, because I simply can't spend $2000 US.

What about a dual boiler? Which machine would you recommend around 2k usd range?
@Rydecoffeecoach

There's quite a few dual boilers that are great but not sure how many are at that price point. Some of the top of my head that I like are Profitec Pro 300 (there's also the Move which is an upgrade to the 300), ECM mechanika max, Lelit Elizabeth, Quick Mill 67 to name a few. Hope this helps! 👌

Which pressure does the gauge on the Go show? The pressure at the group head or at the pump?
@Rydecoffeecoach
@Rydecoffeecoach 2 ай бұрын
It's the pump level but just allow for about a 1 bar drop at the group. 👌

The Rancillio with the Gagguino is unbeaatable but the GO is brilliant if you want to do that on the Silvia. Can you do a take on the Gagguino on the Silvia?

Should have compared the Rancilio with a PID with the Profitec Go. I hate the argument of "less to go wrong" If they are built well, it doesn't matter how many features it has if they never go wrong. I learned how to make espresso on an ECM Synchronika and it took me probably 18 months to finally feel like I knew how to make espresso after making a shot or two 5 times a week for that long. It doesn't matter how nice a machine is or the number of features it has if the person, like me, doesn't know the signs of a bad shot or how to fix them. That's going to stand in the way of people making a good espresso and not the machine's features or lack of them. I would have chosen the same one the customer chose. I had bought a Sage Barista Pro for the office, and I wasn't happy with it after having to return the first one for not being able to grind at all fine enough for espresso. On the new machine, every shot was bitter no matter the coffee or how fine or course it was ground, then after a couple of kilo's of coffee it started to make decent espresso, but during that time I was considering between the Rancilio with a PID and the Profitec. They both had deal breakers, and I liked the Lelit Mara X better, too. It's a great looking machine with a 58mm portafilter so all the accessories I have at home would have worked for it, too.

And it doesn’t matter how good a coffee machine you have if you are using old and cheap beans - it will still taste like shit. On the other hand, if you have good fresh roasted beans with a cheap machine like Silvia - it will taste like heaven❤

I have the Go and I never had a problem with buttons for a second. I mean, they're buttons; it's not a touch a screen (as you point out yourself). So complaining that you actually have to push them seem really unfair. The Go is great overall.

Agreed. Never had the slightest issue with these buttons. I would not mind rocker switches either, but on the Silvia, that plastic looks exceedingly cheap.
@Rydecoffeecoach
@Rydecoffeecoach 2 ай бұрын
Yeh I think it came across a little harsher. It wasn't that they are a big issue but more that I prefer the rocker switches. It was more an observation, I think in the editing it looked worse than I actually felt about it. 😅

Install a PID into Rancilio and it will crush the profitec. Mine is almost 20 years old with PID and it's still a beast.
@robertp457
@robertp457 2 ай бұрын
Crush it? How? How much does it cost to install a PID and how much knowledge does a person need to install one? How long does it take to heat up before making an espresso? If it's longer than 5-10 minutes, It doesn't work for me.
@asambi69

@@robertp457 Usually around the 100-150$ mark, atleast for the Gaggia. PID does nothing to increase warmup time tho.

let's face it, not having a PID and a way to see real time preassure and also adjust to 9 bars in 2024 it's a big no. Sure you can install mods on Silvia but why bother when you have other machines that offers you those by default.

Much rather wait 20-30 mins for heat up to heat soak the machine and portafilter.
@davethetaswegian
@davethetaswegian 2 ай бұрын
The idea behind the Profitec GO's fast heat mode is to overheat the boiler so that the group and portafilter get up to temperature faster, i.e. to reduce the required heat soak time for the entire machine.
