For years: I Enjoy playing Dimir. Control and Subterfuge are my bread and butter. But it is always like tipping my toes into a mired pond. I align with Bant and Jeksai philosophically. So no Black. It's more like when playing, I allow myself to relish in my urges to be uncompromising and cruel, in a safe manner :)

I started with Mono Red when I played Standard, and when I got into Commander I switched over to Esper, however over time I have found I have the most amount of fun with my own colors, Grixis. It doesn't matter what I play within that, whether it's the cunning and sabotage of Dimir, the pure childlike joy of Red, the sadistic glee of Rakdos, the dark duelality of Black, the outright storm of confusion of Izzet, or the simple complexity of Blue, Grixis is my home and the Grixis commanders bring a whole new light to "Go ahead, try and hurt me, if you can"

Definitely a mix, if I leaned towards one it would have to be the one that started it at, Red. Finish the fight quickly. Either your opponent will be left in the ashes of your wake, or you will be. Nowadays I end up playing two color. Boros grew on me recently, Gruul has my two fav colors BUT I have found a new love for Golgari

When I first started playing, my first couple commanders were Jund and Rakdos; Black/Red just resonates with me play-wise. But after I began looking into the color pie and the philosophies, I've found myself to be more Blue/Black aligned (with Red not far behind) and started playing Grixis. Now I'm a full-time Blue/Black/Red player!

I love the poetic descriptions of each color. As a Vorthos and Melvin, I'm able to resonate thematically in the art but also the mechanics, and this video gives ample quality description. Even for people who don't play magic, this is great for their stories or ttrpg gatherings. Anyway, my colors are in this order: 1. Red, 2. White, 3. Black, 4. Green, 5. Blue. When I play, I love to win quickly, with the least amount of clutter on the battlefield. As such if early game I can't achieve victory, I favor board wipes and removal, until I can be ahead chipping an burning away each point of life from my opponents.

The bridge between the philosophies of each color and how that relates to mechanics is something I just love about magic.

When I first played, I was primarily green. Eventually, I experimented with Gruul, Selesnya, and Simic. Later, I played around with white and white combinations, like Orzhov and Boros. Today, I'm mostly an Azorius player. It seems to suit me the best personally, and I enjoy the style of play. Of course, sometimes I still enjoy Simic or Selesnya.

White really resonates with me, but not to the exclusion of the others...which honestly is a philosophy of white that I think makes it so much more robust. I have played and loved playing several mono-white decks. But...Some of my favorite decks to play have been an Orzhov enchantment deck, an Azorius spirit deck, a Boros Iroas commander deck, and Selesnya Tokens. What do all of these have in common? WHITE! White has been a meme for a long time ever since I started playing Magic, but that often happens when it stands by itself. White however, bolsters and strengthens whatever color it decides to pair itself with. It gives black a means to replenish what is sacrifices and allows green to flourish under its protection. In other words, White fulfills its own role when combined with the other colors. White speaks of unity, protection, order, peace, and believes that we are stronger together. Well...I'd say it achieves that, making the other four colors stronger when it is added to the mix.

Dice, you forgot colorless! Given that you have covered Colorless as a color before, and Colorless decks exist in every format (25 possible Colorless Commanders, so EDH gets the love as well) why leave it out here? I get the reasoning of "If you are new keep it simple" but it would have been nice to see how you would have introduced Colorless to someone just starting their *cough* addiction *cough* I mean their journey with MTG and all it's lore, game, and philsophy.

Sometimes I'm Abzan and it's all about family, nature, and doing anything for them. Somedays I'm Jeskai and it's all about me being a writer. Other times I'm Sultai and it's all about nature being grim and dark and me being darkly creative.

i have found myself in a difficult situation. a life of conflicting desires. one to uphold my beliefs based on what i beleive to be true and another of impulsive and dramatic feeling, a life of obligation and a life of shedding restriction and just BEING. at what point does one BECOME a color? can we say that simply performing the actions that are commonly associated with a way of thinking makes us aligned with that cause? what of those who are motivated by extreme emotion and have a dramatic nature that become timid and patient when confronted with something that would internally make them angry in person? is someone aligned with white mana when they beleive that there is something that they should do, even if they don’t like doing it, when it goes against what they want? what of someone who doesn’t like unnecessary standards to create a world of peace and would rather have everyone express their minds fully and loudly but would still hold back for the sake of their God or out of love for others? would that be just a zealous white? red white? just red? what about when we add a desire to simply just BE in this crazy world? when one just wants to feel attached to themselves and the beings they come across, feeling their essence as a living thing and all it’s instinctual urges flood over them while maintaining the aggressive structures of the world they call home? are we creatures that put on a facade to gain approval of others who do the same? or are we truly a civilized race, bestowed with a unique trait of denying our nature for the sake of what we think is better or is simply better in others’ eyes? where would the colors of mtg bring us in this regard? is it red? red green? red green white? red white? just green? just white? at what point do feelings that conflict with actions or actions that conflict with feelings decide someone’s identity?

For myself, I’ve always viewed myself as a primarily Black planeswalker, but without the lust for power. I really liked your line about being a necessary evil, as that’s how I view it to a degree. Not all who are evil use black mana, and not all who utilize black mana are evil. As an example, look at Kaya, Tyvar, and Kaito. All walkers who utilize black mana, and who fight for more or less moral reasons.

Feel like sharing here real quick, but let me first say how amazing this channel is. I love philosophical debates about Magic, any debates about Magic, and I love this channel so much. Keep doing amazing work like this! I started out as a Mono-Green player, before I had began to dive into the lore of the game and the story. I have always found it so awesome that a dinosaur or beast or whatever is just big enough that it gets to stomp over everything with trample! I later tried out red and white, and found both of those to be very fun and unique. At this point, I've played every combination hundreds of times and I've never really liked black or blue's play style or ideals, with the exception of Orzhov, Izzet, Jund, and Temur because they have my favorite colors. Grixis was shockingly fun, it has my least favorite colors but the freedom and self-expression in red makes it fun for me. In short, I have ALWAYS adored Naya.

My very first color was Green, so it's always the base for any deck I make. When Kamigawa and Ravnica came along, I started using Red and White as well. If I'm playing Green/Red, it usually means Borborygmos is coming eventually. If I'm playing Green/White, expect to be swarmed by Elves, Soldiers, and Knights. Red/White is usually Knights/Soldiers with buffs and burns.

Blue is always my foundation, it just reflects very much both my personality and favourite playstyle. Favourite combination is U/W Azorious control followed by U/B Dimir control, sometimes going for a wilder R/U Izzet spellslinger. It goes without saying that Esper is my go-to 3 colour combination.

My first and main color is White. I began playing around OG Theros. Dropped the game for a couple of years since I really couldn't find a suitable playgroup. Came back right before Amonkhet. Started Playing Selesnya. I felt like home! Got my first commander (Derevi), but it didn't set with me for some reason. Then I got my second commander and I fell in love with the format. Tried on and off mixing other colors but the playstyle just didn't click with me. However, recently, after a two year hiatus, I came back and bought a Grixis commander, and it was quite fun! Turns out while mixing White with colors other than green didn't fit my playstyle, playing my opposing colors was quite fun as a sort of "Anti-me" playstyle. Not playing for the honor of victory, but for pure, chaotic fun. RN I'm building a Dimir, and so far the process has been quite fun.

I can go into any of the colors, however, the two I see most commonly in myself that are almost always there are Green and white. Sure red shows itself in spurts of rage and the need for independence, black shows up occasionally when I decide that I need to do whatever it takes to win, even if that means doing unspeakable horrors, and Blue shows up when I’m introspective and planning, sitting down and figuring out the purpose and meaning of everything from rules to myself to why different people have different preferences. But I am always doing it in a controlled and disciplined manner, I refuse to not have control of myself, that being said, I believe the world was created to perform a purpose and that each person in it is here to play a role and that we shouldn’t be so eager to try and break the rules of nature and that by pushing these limits we are threatening the whole system and that must be protected. I need to make a deck that actually includes white lol.

I determined my favorite color and color combinations based on a 5-point system. Starting with mono colors I asked myself if I'd enjoy playing a deck with just that color, thinking about what those decks might look like. Green stompy or elves, red burn or goblins, black reanimator or zombie, white equipment or humans, and blue control or merfolk. If the color sounds like something I'd enjoy playing then I give it a point. Next, I do this for all ten of the two color combinations. If that seems a bit much for you then just look at the guilds of Ravnica and note which ones you'd like to play or could see yourself enjoying playing. Give a point for each color in each pair. Finally whatever color has the most points is your actual preferred color and whatever has the fewest points is your least favorite. For me, my preferences are as follows: + White 4/5 + Green 5/5 + Red 3/5 + Black 3/5 + Blue 1/5 White: yes Green: yes Red: yes Black: yes Blue: no Selesnya: yes Boros: yes Orzhov: yes Azorius: no Gruul: yes Golgari: yes Simic: yes Rakdos: no Izzet: no Dimir: no From here I can also determine between the shards and wedges which I'd most likely prefer. My favorite color shard is Naya (g/r/w) and my favorite wedge is Abzan (b,g,w). My least favorite 3 color combination is Grixis with Esper and Jeskai close behind. I prefer this method over most others for finding optimal enjoyment out of the colors someone might play compared to most other 'tests' you'll find in abundance online. Most two-color tests suggest that I'd enjoy Azorius decks when in actuality I despise piloting those colors because of the gameplay most of those decks offer. It also clearly shows in my personal assessment that I don't like playing blue, but online tests are right in that I have a secondary affinity for white. Granted this kind of self-assessment only really works for players who have tried out several decks in each of the 15 color types listed above, which is 45+ different decks. That's a lot to take in and probably too much for a newer player. For newer players, I'd recommend starting with a couple two color decks as it tends to be easier and gives you more exposure to the colors. I'd also recommend new players to play everything to really get to know what you like and dislike.

When I first played magic I played white with a dip into red or blue but I grew over time to replace white with black as the main color and I still keep the dip of red or blue but I come to relieve that my true self is like a coin where on one side is Mardu (Black/Red/White) where I build an army while using whatever means necessary to ensure victory and use the passion of pure battle to make victory possible. And the other side of my coin being Grixis (Black/Red/Blue) where I use the emotions of passion, ambitions, and curiosity to manipulate as I see fit and use whatever I want to calculate my victory. So yeah I can say my main mono color is black but mostly being torn between mardu and grixis makes me part of red, white, and blue.

Blue was the first color that drew me in, but not the type of blue play style you described really. I think it's a big disservice to blue to categorize it as the spells and combo color, with card draw as its main distinction. What got me into blue was its ability to manipulate, steal, and ignore. Blue can swing through unblocked in myriad ways, impose difficult choices on your opponent, and manipulate the game in a very meta way. I love blue, but I find counterspells boring. It's the trickery and mind games that drew me to the color. Cunning is, after all, somewhat analogous to guile. Cards like Master of Predicaments, Errant Ephemeron, Sigil of Sleep, Rootwater Matriarch, Tidal Influence, Stormtide Leviathan, Steal Enchantment, Monastery Flock, and Gravitational Shift are what got me into Magic. Idk if you're not really a blue player, or just a really Spike-y one, but you didn't portray the more compelling side of blue imo. Yeah, I built a mill deck at one point as well, but it was more about the inevitability than winning in one quick combo.

Sometimes I wished picking a colour combo to express myself with a favoured playstyle was as easy as a Lantern corps power ring selecting their new wielder. As of now, I'm an Izzet player because I love performing combos and feeling secure with my counterspells but it doesn't express myself as an individual. I guess as a human, we all have bits and pieces of WUBRG, but even after this wonderful video I'm still not sure what my colour would be because of how different the playstyle of that colour can be from how one wants to be expressed. I guess this will make experimenting with all of the possible colour combos all the more fun!

The best Decks (fun and w/l Ratio wise) that i played in 20+ years are completely different from what should be more my Cup of Tea based on philosophy.

When i started playing 4 years ago, the two colours that resonated with me were blue and black. I didn't really like red at the time and absolutely hated white and green. However, as time passed, i embrased the red side of me, and became more of a grixis player. But, as much as i love these colours, i hate winning with combos and not through combat or mill. So i tried all the colour combinations possible. Now, as i grew older, i've became fond of white's controlling stax side (sorry, green, don't really like you even now), but not the creature types and overall "justice" theme. The problem is, i can't really deside on what colours are mine in the end. It's something in between grixis and esper with the accent on combat, i guess.

All my best decks are Black/Green, and I've always loved that playstyle, whether it was with Lilliana in Strixhaven or with New Phyrexia back in the day. If I could pick one color, its always black... Winning at all costs against my friends was important because I sucked. 😅 But as I got better, it was Black/Green that usually carried me through.

Way back when, I started off with White. I liked the vigilance, lifelink, protection, and Angels. I really like tokens too. Throughout the years i tried the other colors. Red and Black being the hardest with my personality. So I can dabble with Green/Blue to help with my White philosophy. I have a Krenko, Mob Boss commander deck, i like because of all the tokens it can make and can deal damage without swinging in sometimes with my previous creatures. I have also just made 4 White/X commander decks all with Angels at the helm. White/Blue flash/flying, White/Black life drain/lifelink/exile, White/Red extra combats, White/Green Angels/Human.

The Demon, Vampire, Eldrazi and Horror subtype are probably my favourite cards 😊 so id say im 1) Black 2) Green 3) Blue 4) White 5) Red.

To me the weird thing is that who I am as a person IRL and who I am in I guess "fictional projection" are very different, and this kind of reflects in my playstyle. I would say that the every day me is more on the Izzet side, or possibly Jeskai. Blue is hugely defining of me and my constant search of knowledge, understanding and innovation, with an eye for the future and finding ways of self-improvement, my tastes in trying clever unusual tactics (well, I hope they are clever anyway), and so on... but red is the color of passionate creativity and self-expression which are also big for me, while white has elements of religion and order to protect. On the other hand, Dimir, Grixis or even Sultai fit my playstyle and my approach in more fictional scenarios. I allow myself to be more ruthless in those than I would in real life, and I absolutely love both black's generally ability to remove things, to take from opponents, and to use alternative resources. Yeah that's a very utilitarian reason to like black, but then again - isn't being utilitarian like that exactly what black is about? Green is a bit more of a minor influence philosophically, mainly tied to respect for traditions and the fact I love color wedges. It's also a color I could very much see myself using mechanically though. I think either way I'm primarily a blue planeswalker, but while at the same time I can't deny my desire for self-expression or my values, but also not the fact how much in practice I love black's playstyle and approach. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As a completely unrelated matter, what you mentioned with haste and red made me think about what if you made a video specifically addressing how many core mechanics express the five colors. Not necessarily a series, more of an overview sort of video, and I think you may have touched on this on your individual color videos, but I'm talking about a video more dedicated to exploring this dynamic. Food for thought.

I think it would be much better to say that Green more correlates to tradition, to uphold order set before them and to tread proven paths, as although Nature and its order are a good example and is featured in most cards, it does limit the view on their exact philosophy, not to mention the fact that all other colors tap into their own version of nature, even if it is less front and center. Not an MtG player myself, but that is the kind of view I've developed by watching your videos and as I've been using the Color Pie to develop a world of my own.

A friend of mine from school had brought in his mono color decks to school. I was interested because of the art. So one by one I started to sift through each deck. White was boring to me just human soldiers and clereks with a bit of angels aven and other birds. Blue felt cold and complicated mechanics that needs knowledge of the game to work. I did like black's creature but not it's playstyle. Red was too hot and in your face for me. Green was perfect for me the color and the creatures were alluring to say the least it's my just perfect color for me. I forgot to metion that colorless felt empty to me once I got to see it.

Green is the best color to start learning the game with. It has the least punishing mechanics and provides straight numbers to manage. Blue and black are the most advanced colors followed by red and white. White gives an introduction to control elements to new players so I recommend it as the second color to learn after mastering green.

Im more aligned with green's philosophy than white's, though both colors still resonate strong with me. As of right now, I'm building my first Selesnya deck. Green is because I really appreciate how nature has a knack for creating interesting solutions to obstacles. I also love animals and i used to go on walks explicitly to enjoy the scenery (not able to as much now). In the game, I like big creatures every now and then. My favorite thing though is the ramp and creature-based spells. White was my first deck because Angels. I feel strong with white because I always feel that I have to be protective of the people around me. Im also a sucker for underdogs. In play, i really enjoy the defensive play white does as well as its small creatures with pretty impactful abilities. Blue isnt a color I like to admit liking much, but it is my 3rd highest. I believe this to be because I like drawing cards and playing around my opponent's strategy when I dont get to do what I want. Philisophically, I assume its because I dislike stagnation and I'm always trying to better understand the world around me. Red is a color that I think is really fun and pretty much the "cool" color, but also impulsive and carefree. Valuable traits in the right situation to be sure, but I prefer to be a bit more patient in most cases. In the game, I've only found enjoyment with red in Gruul thus far, but I have a friend giving me good ideas for other red combinations. I have a Kasla that I'm going to rebuild at some point. Black is a color I find the most difficulty to resonate with. My first instinct is to protect my pieces rather than destroy them. The only black deck I've worked on is Orzhov life drain (not complete), and I dont have much desire for the other types of playstyles it likes. With Black's themes, I dont really resonate with it at all as Im not really ambitious or trying to "win" in life as much as I am just trying to go at my own pace, and I like it that way. Im often placed in the Bant shard, but i believe that Green/White is really my core colors.

I remember first getting into MTG because some classmates played it. I watched them play, and once asked for suggestions on precons to buy. They asked what I was looking for, I said Blue cards looked really cool. Then they all said: "There's no way in hell you're a Blue player! You're super Red, perhaps Green too, try that". Seriously, to this very day, the more I know about MTG lore and flavor, the more I do quizzes and such, the more Gruul I know I am. Those dudes knew their stuff!

Nice video! Already shared it :) Great thematic display of the colours and explanation of their gameplay styles. Only two minor issues i have with it: 1. You made it seem like some colours were 'good' and other colours weren't, which isnt the case. White isnt good and black bad; white just puts laws and equality over individuals. White is the colour of tyrants, slave owners and strict lawmen who care more about their rules being followed than whether someone is affected negatively by them. I thought you did a good job of explaining white, except for making it seem like the 'good' person's colour and skipping its 'bad' traits. Black is the colour of pragmatism, i think you did a good job of explaining it tbh, but i like to think of it more as a colour that emphasises that the ends justifies the means, it's the army commander that is willing to sacrifice some soldiers in order to win the war, but by failing to do this other colours condemn ALL their soldiers to die when they lose the war. Blue can also be callous and cruel, willing to do experiments on animals, enemies and lessers in order to understand the world (note that it is mono blue to be a cruel scientist, not black/blue; its only black/blue if you are sacrificing your own allies/resources/equals in order to understand something). 2. You showed a mono green card during the black explanation :P (Primal Adversary) (Okay, i know i wrote a lot in point 1, but i really want to emphasise that it actually was only a minor issue for me, for the most part i loved the video and thought it was an excellent starting point. I shared it with my friend who is getting into magic now.)

Yeah for point one it was sort of intentional. As, in this video I discussed the colours sort of how they are most often seen in magic, as this was more of a surface level new player guide to the color pie. I actually have quite a few videos on my channel talking about the potential evil of white and the virtues of Black. As for point 2... woops.
