Man, this really makes me want a UAZ 452! It's one of the oldest vehicle designs still in production today (along with the UAZ 469) and still holds it's own . Any time you see a video about Siberia, or a former Soviet republic or Mongolia you always see these things traversing the most inhospitable conditions and many times they have lived in these places for 40+ years! Would I buy the Dodge? No. It's just too big, too unwieldy and too expensive. The UAZ 452 or 469 would be much more to my liking since I dig simple, rugged engineering and don't care too much about comfort and convenience. That electronic transfer case is nice while it works, but if it failed on that trail it would not be easy to fix with a bush repair like the UAZ.

We also have Lada Niva in Russia. Also an incredible classic SUV still in production and very much in demand by everyone who moves off the asphalt. UAZ and Niva are of course a little different conceptually, UAZ is a roomier, body-on-frame, but not very reliable (well-known words about UAZ are "Always wounded, but never killed!"), and NIVA is the first crossover in history (assuming that a crossover is an SUV with a unibody) and more reliable. Personally, I'm a fan of Niva, but I also really like UAZ, especially Buhanka. By the way, my friend worked at the UAZ factory a few years ago

Congrats to David & Andre for sticking to it...Buhanka rules!!! A little something I came across while off-roading, Air filters tend to get easily clogged, one really can't see why or how...the solution is to affix, fabricate an obscenely oversized air-filter & housing assembly...works wonders. Taking bets that is what slowed down Andres soviet ride...

I don't know if Toby your mechanic has looked at the van, but as hard as it is to start I suspect fuel pressure issues. It seems to be losing fuel pressure when it sits for a while. No fuel injected vehicle should crank that long without firing.

Having grown up using old land rover 109s and 88s , 1980 range rover (pretty worn out one) and a brace of toyota bakkies (hilux4x4 and land cruiser) ect in Africa in the early side of the mid 1980s through to the 110 defender diesels , you certainly get to know how to drive , my last toyota was a 1hz diesel 80 series Land Cruiser Africa base spec with no power steering from the factory , my next car I bought I thought I would treat myself , I bought a range rover tdv8 , nice car that rides nicely but it , like that ram will be is a frustrating piece of computerised crap that I dont trust offroad because it needs its stupid electronic programs and computers that nanny you and wont let you use it properly , also true of the electronic age , the bloody thing is forever breaking down , its current issue is the terrain response system , my next car is going to be a seventy series Land Cruiser , something I know I can drive (and it wont try and drive me) that I can go anywhere and NOT BREAK DOWN OR HAVE A COMPUTER HAVING ITS PERIOD every few weeks !

1. Pinstripes are like war wounds. I'd be suspect of the testing of any off-road rig without them. 2. The RAM error lights are more worrisome than the finickiness of the Buhanka since the old diesel van is much easier to troubleshoot and repair on the trail than the new tech in the RAM or any new vehicle made today. 3. I'm pretty sure that Alfredo sauce was supposed to be mixed in the pan before serving but hey, that's one way to make sure you get enough sauce! Great series, I'm loving it! 👍🏽

It could be a fuel vent issue. As you use up the fuel in the tank, the volume needs to be replaced with air and if the vent is clogged, it starts to create a vacuum, which reduces the amount of fuel to the engine. When the engine is idling or at low RPM, there's still enough flow, but when you try to accelerate, it can bog due to lack of fuel. A quick test is to open the fuel filler cap and see if the issue goes away.

The reason the military doesn’t want you running at night is twofold. 1. You could damage sensors and infrastructure and possibly run over troops on night maneuvers trying to make your way around . 2. Smugglers in that area move at night. Either way most civilians don’t like running into armed troops pointing their weapons at you.

Trying to recharge a battery bank of any size using solar is an exercise in futility while driving. A dc to dc charger is a much better option for situations like this where you’re driving all day. Those all in one battery bank things that everyone likes to call a “generator” seem like a waste of money to me. In a vehicle setting you can build a battery bank with twice the storage capacity with separate components for way less money. The only real advantages I can see are portability and idiot proofing that the small ones provide.

First thing my dad said to me when he was teaching me to drive at about 8-10 yrs old was to never put your thumbs inside around the steering wheel. Pre-power steering off roading was pretty difficult for a young boy to hold on to that steering wheel. Also, when you have hubs and you want low gears but not 4wd, leave the hubs unlocked and shift to 4 lo. My young boy legs struggled with the heavy clutch especially trying to back up heavy trailers. Lo range 2wd gave me a powerful and slow reverse that I didn't have to worry about killing the engine or going to fast while trying to back trailers.

Buhanka is ok, however, bringing GAZ-66: 4x4, 42 tires, difflocks, winch, central tire inflation system (all options are stock), V8, 3.5 t dry weight and also very cheap and uncomfortable (more or less on par with Buhanka); would give much more fun. BTW, weld upper corners of the rear door frame, otherwise you will have cracks quite soon.
