Having taught DofE I am used to always taking a map. I always have a map and a compass, whistle, swiss army knife, first aid kit and most importantly a survival bag. You don't need tons of kit but a few basics can prevent a major issue.

As a teenager i decided to go climb some local hills. I was woefully unprepared, just wearing my casual clothes and runners Stumbled into a deep bog and lost both shoes trying to get out, had to wrap one foot in my tshirt and the other in my beanie hat and make my way back down Still loved it and have been and outdoors enthusiast ever since Great, informative video!

Had 2 things go wrong. Had a 3 season tent flattened in a storm at night at cairngorm. In the morning when I got out of the tent, My pocket got ripped off , my map that was in it flew away. Not an issue as had route in the gps . Since then I put map in a mapcase which is attatched to my rucksack, also carry a spare map . Had a hillberg akto ripped out of ground in a storm as I was getting back in after sorting a corner that gone down. Did some paraglideing after grabbing a guyline as it took off. When gust died , stuffed it with everythign inside into a survival bag and gtfo.

While driving the remote Dempster Highway a few months ago in the Northern Yukon of Canada, I came across a car accident where a man had been trapped for many hours. Fortunately, I had a GPS text device and was able to reach assistance. A Canadian Forces helicopter airlifted the poor chap out. If you spend any time at risk in the Great Outdoors, get a Zoleo, Garmin Inreach, or another reliable communicator. They do require a quite pricey subscription, but they can be suspended when not needed. I’m flying into Nahanni National Park next week for 10 days of hoofing and goofing on foot and in kayak. My satgear is the first thing I pack.

👍👍👍 .. good advice .. including that in the comments. Something I read many years back in a 1970's Outdoor Magazine, "One is never really lost. You know exactly where you are .. perhaps just not where you would like to be." 😁. When I walk out of my front door, at the very least, I have with me, a Swiss Army Knife .. Handkerchief (NEVER EVER used to blow one's nose .. pocket tissues fill that that role) .. Roll of Cordage .. a Mini First Aid Kit .. 'Loo Kit' for me (I'm 74 😏) and Pooch (when she is with) .. Mobile Phone .. Whistle and Door Key around my neck, tucked in under the shirt. My Loo Kit also contains Coinage that can be used to gain access to Public Facilities at Train and Bus Stations .. some demand it 🙄. Thanks for sharing. It is always interesting (and valuable) to know what / how others 'do things'. Until next time then .. take care .. 'What can go wrong'? In the Movie 'Kingdom of Heaven', Saladin when asked 'what Jerusalem meant to him', replied, "Nothing." Walking away, he paused and then said, "Everything .."

Good video, before wild camping for the first time, do a dry run, could be your garden or somewhere close to your car or home, to see if everything works, better to do this, than discover on the top of a mountain. Don't need expensive gear, but unlikely the budget tent from Halfords going to be ideal, do your homework and test your gear

I went canyoneering with a group from my university years ago. The desert is hot in the daytime, and can get pretty cold at night especially during the spring when we were there. I remember packing my wool base layers and my roommate thought I was silly. Boy did I need them, it was cold at night and I slept in a puffy coat as well. Better to bring it and not need it than to not have it and be miserable without it.

Being able to get into dry clothing is a life saver. It is relatively easy to stay warm, if out of the wind and dry. The coldest I've been is in summer and warmest in winter (dehydrated). If you call out mountain rescue, there's a good chance you'll be hypothermic by the time they get to you.

A good tip is,when you pack your rucksack pack anything long or short that is rigid parallel to your back,so if you even have a small fall these items dont pierce you.Wrap gas canisters in clothes (keeps them warmer so work more efficently),Reduces the chance of them being punctured,if the weather flips and you fall and then don't have the ability to make hot food for you or your group, you can times the conditions by 5, but 99.9% of the time it's Amazing.Get yourself to Suilven x

Hi Paul, I stumbled across your channel just yesterday because of the "What's Wrong with KZbin" video suggested to me by YT ;) and I'm trying to catch up with the daily vlog. So far this is the best video (apart from the ones with the Mrs, of course). The worst and the most stupid mistakes are the ones we make ourselves, right? :) All the pieces of advice you give are priceless, because they come from experience. If I had to pick the most important, they would be: 1. ALWAYS let know where you're going and what time you're planning to come back. 2. NEVER forget a first aid kit. If not for you, it will be useful for some other hikers along the road. 3. Don't Ever forget to bring your "bathroom kit". There's nothing worse than seeing other people's waste in a beautiful spot. 4. Take more water and food than you expect to need. This is especially important in the mountains, since you'll encounter some people, who think "Oh, I can do this on a Mars bar and a can of Pepsi". They're wrong on so many levels ;) Greetings from Poland and I hope I can visit your area some time in the future for a hike/ camp. Bwazhei

texts will often get through when you appear not to have a signal. not always but often. register your phone with emergency services before you go anywhere. in an emergency you can then text map references to 999. details how to register online. carry a couple of those chemical heat packs even in summer. if you get caught out and start to experience hypothermia they can pull you out of it. a bottle of hot water will work too. it has been snowing on the hills in the Scottish highlands this June. its easy to be caught with the wrong gear. carry a bivvi bag. if everything else goes wrong you have a basic shelter to sit it out until the morning

I've been lucky and not had any real gear failures, but I've had injuries like a sprain or a torn muscle which has made the subsequent hours of hiking absolute white hot agony. It couldn't have been predicted or prevented, but a well stocked first aid kit got me through without the need for a helicopter (which would have been the only option). I've helped plenty of others who have typically been in a bit of a jam due to nothing but bad planning, the classic ones being they've run out of water (and had no filter) or run out of gas....my repair kit mostly goes to use for others who have brought along gear of questionable quality that they've been given and is either knackered or not up to task. Your repair kit or first aid kit could well end up rescuing others as you say.

A compass and map never run out of battery. I don't see anything wrong with *sometimes* using google maps to check if you're at the correct fork in the path or just verify that you know where you are. But I would never primarily use it on the hills. Knowing my luck, the day I get into real trouble will be the day I forget to charge my phone overnight or something like that. In my rucksack, I permanently keep a compass, whistle, water filter, some plasters, basic medicines (painkillers, antacid tablets, hayfever tables, immodium) and hand sanitiser. I take this same bag to work where I (hopefully!) won't need any of these things, but it means I never risk NOT having them when I do.

Add one of those 'emergency plastic ponchos' to use icw the mylar sheet .. the ones often handed out 'free' at open air events ('free' in that it's already covered by the price 😳 of the entrance ticket 😏). They cost almost nothing, weigh very little, are reusable and take up minimum space. Some duct tape wound onto an old bank card / similar and cordage. When needed .. remember, the Mylar Sheet is a 'once only' (once freed from it's packing, it takes on a life, and volume of it's own 😁), cut a slit in the Mylar Sheet to accommodate the head, tape the slit ends to prevent further 'running' (Usain Bolt has nothing on a mylar slit 😏). Doff the mylar sheet, followed by the rain poncho. The Cordage has many applications .. the least being used as a Belt in windy conditions. One can then, if circumstances do not permit movement, hunker down somewhere until the worse has passed or help arrives. Now, if one has some T'Lite Candles around somewhere, even better. The entire Doodah takes up little space and stores flat inside a pocket-sized plastic 'Loc' Bag. Blade to cut the Mylar Sheet and Cordage? I thought that everyone has one of those???

One of the best things in your Emergency Kit is "CLEAR THINKING". We oftentimes think that our POWERS OF REASONING are going to carry us through a bad spot. If you're Cold or Hot, Soaking Wet, Vision Impaired, Lacking Good Balance, Hungry, Weakness, Injured, At High or Lower Altitudes, In need of Medications, etc., will play on your REASONING SKILLS. ALWAYS TAKE EXTRA TIME TO THINK IT THRU AGAIN (even if it'sa few minutes or seconds)! When in any of those conditions the old saying of "never second guess yourself" CAN AND OFTENTIMES DOES PLAY TRICKS ON YOU. Being knowledgeable about your ABILITY TO REASON WELL and TO TAKE SAFEGUARDS TO ASSURE THAT can be LIFE SAVING. It will allow you to KNOCK IT OUT AND GET BACK SAFE! As a former Police 911 Dispatcher I often heard the comment "I can't believe this happened! What was I thinking?!!" Sadly, oftentimes they didn't and it ended badly.

Map and compass aren't invincible. On top of Ben Wyvis (north of Inverness) over 30 years ago (pre GPS) - with my son, in a whiteout with gale force winds driving sleet and snow. I took the OS map out to check our position and get a fix to head off the mountain and it instantly turned into soggy paper, tore out of my hands and blew away leaving me with a small piece of paper in each hand. Then to crown it all as we started to descend, the compass headings started to make no sense whatsoever. It turned out we were descending round a gully on the wrong side of the mountain. I started to think the compass must be faulty and only realised what was actually happening by convincing myself to TRUST THE COMPASS and work out what the readings were actually telling me. Nowadays of course map and compass USED WITH GPS is far more reliable. 🙂

Have walked 100s of miles over rough terrain no bother , come to lanzarote amd walked 17k today and got the worst blister ever due to not having my walking boots on 🙈. Just shows you how a bad blister can cripple you .

Get a PLB if nothing else. Android 15, next one. Problem with a phone over a Garmin, etc. is going to be battery life, especially if you've been using it for navigation. A few days of carrying their wag-bags sort of ruined the whole Antarctica experience 💩🤣

All good. The dreaded poke through. Conditions can change in a minute with blowing of the wund so much so you can't see your hand in front of your face. Be prepared to hunker down and dmstay safe til it clears. No need to expose yourself to unnecessary danger and possible injury. Good vid. Cheers. Doom and gloom. It's what you make it. Reality can be just that. Next time. Tomorrow

I always have a first aid kit in the car. They were compulsory for cars when I lived in Lithuania. Thing is, does everyone know first aid? I still would say that anyone going out on the hills should be able to use a map and compass. NATO sometimes block GPS during exercises and some phones are not very accurate. Also, many phones are vulnerable to cold, shock and water. You can pick up a second-hand etrex 20 for peanuts these days as well. I tend to avoid summit camps no matter the tents. A nice sheltered spot for me.

Same here in Germany and the first aide kit in the car must not be past expiry date and has to be replenished in case you've used some of it. At the mo I've got two in my car, one expiring soon and a new one. The silver blankets in the kit are packed so small and weigh nothing. Which reminds me to have one in my rucksack, when I go walking again.

@@medievalladybird394Same rules I'm used to plus a fire extinguisher.Mosy of Europe seems to follow the same rule except Ireland and UK. It is a fail on the road worthiness test of no kit or out of date. I carry a bivvy bag when hillwalking, always have done. My first aid kit for hiking is smaller and mainly for myself but I do pack a triangular bandage as there is so much you can do with one of them.

@@BrokenBackMountainsa fire extinguisher sounds like a good idea. It's not compulsary in Germany. It is compulsary though to stop and help if needed, so what do you do in the UK if you haven't got first aide stuff? We need a first aide certificate for the driver's licence. So most people fell walking would at least know the basics.

Nope, no first aid lessons though elsewhere in Europe there were. I learned first aid for work and updated whenever the cert ran out. @@medievalladybird394

#1 objective of any outdoor adventure is to return to the trailhead under your own power. All other objectives are irrelevant. Listen to your instincts instead of pushing. Listen to what your body is telling you.

I've wild camped hundreds of times, but I cannot see the appeal of camping in an exposed place. For every hike that features camping there is a forest en-route. Wind protection, firewood (no need to carry a stove etc) Wild camping is one thing. Hiking is another. I'll die on this hill. No pun intended.

If you are in zero visibility and you don't know where you are then a map and compass is no help whatsoever. A set of batteries in a hand held GPS will last for many months, use that to find out where you are then you can start using the map. I've been on exercises where we were dropped into a unknown location and deliberately given the wrong map (they didn't tell us and we had no GPS). You make the map fit what you see on the ground even though its wrong and you get even more lost!
