That 1990 film is still so good. It found the right balance between the original darker/serious comics and the 80s kid friendly animated show. It’s a shame the sequels had to drop that because of complaints about the first film’s violence

So was I. While I loved the animated series of that time, I really appreciated the darker tone of the movie. I know I saw it more than once in theaters when it came out. And even as a kid, I was disappointed with SotO and even more so with III, even though I loved (and still have the SNES game) Turtles In Time. I was 5 in 1990 and just thought "This movie is so cool!" I think maybe because subconsciously it felt so realistic to me; like it could actually happen and not be goofy.

@@ultimatefanboy4060 Sure they can. They could drop the cheesy surfer accents, the multi-colored masks, and the PG rating, and make the Turtle movie that follows the comic. Not the family friendly abomination that they turned the turtles into.

The older I get the more I admire and appreciate that first movie. Saw it in the theater when it came out and it definitely made me somewhat question the persistently goofy tone of the cartoon and why it never really grew out of that mold. I guess I can blame other kids' pearl-clutching parents that wrote in complaints about the violence and being total buzzkills. Never changes though, people still complain about shows and movies they don't like influencing their kids instead of actually exhibiting responsible parenting.

The movie wasn't as cheesy as the cartoon, but it was still so soft compared to the comics. They crapped all over the original fans when they turned it into a joke of a kids cartoon. The movie wasn't much better.

Judith Hoag has been doing live streams on KZbin lately and she talked about why she didn't return for the second movie. She said she did raise too many concerns and angered people but she said it actually had nothing to do with the violence; she said she knows kids rough house and she had siblings who were all rough with each other, and furthermore she said she recognized the type of movie she was in simply because it had "ninja" in the title and that she never complained about the violence. She's proud of working with Jim Henson's team and that if they were part of it that it couldn't be that violent. Also, since they did tone down the violence in the second movie that never made sense to me that they would let her go for that reason. She said she didn't like that when the Chinese stunt men got hurt that they got sent home with no compensation and that she didn't realize at the time that that was how things worked in the stunt industry in China. I imagine there's more to it but I think she was just too loud behind the scenes and that's why they didn't ask her to be part of the second movie.

Notably the idea of the turtles going through further mutations made its way into the final "Red Sky" episodes of the 1987 cartoon during the time they introduced Lord Dregg to be their new main villain. What's funny is that their mutations in the cartoon almost made them look like the designs they would get in the 2014 movie.

One of the most underrated aspects of the OG is it had fantastic pacing. It was a bit of a slow burn by today’s standards. Plenty of storytelling and ‘down time’ building characters and relationships in between action scenes. It might be the perfect comic book film, honestly.

I've got a soft spot for the 2ns one; the third is very forgettable. None of the 4th film ideas sound very interesting to be honest though, and the more ambitious ones would probably have 90s / early 00s special effects that would have dated very quickly if they somehow managed to get them to work at all. Doesn't seem like there is any logical theme or narrative progression in any of these films, except for the 2nd one which at least deals with the origins of the Turtles, development of their relationship with April, and the return of the Shredder. After that, they were just throwing random ideas at the wall and seeing what stuck. (Which I think is arguably a problem for every iteration of the Turtles franchise, but especially noticeable here)

Something you didn't bring up was the fact they create a 4th Turtles movie in a way. Back in 2007 they released the darker, grittier and more complex animated film titled TMNT. And that was supposed to be gateway for a new trilogy where Shredder returns in the second one and they deal with the Triceraton Invasion in the third. But Nickelodeon then bought the rights to the franchise which gave us the 2012 cartoon which in my opinion is still the best Turtles interpretation/product and the studio that worked in the movie then went bankrupt the following year after the failure of Astro Boy

I think an interesting character for the fifth turtle would have been a human exposed to mutagen after he had been in contact with a normal turtle, such as a kid’s pet. Then he mutates into the same kind of “thing” as the TMNTs, but he has all these unlimited potentials for backstory from a normal human life.

I like the idea of a dystopian timeline, but it would be better if it was a take on Dimension-X just to keep things relevant. Then Dimension-X would be a true parallel dimension instead of just an alien world. Since everything has been earth based. It would be a nice way to liven things up, and stand out from the rest of the films.

This was to be revealed as a cliffhanger or twist ending, but was nixed due to worries that the audience would mistakenly identify the Utrom as Krang, as at the time the Utroms were not known outside of the original comics by Mirage Studios Imagine what the 3rd movie would have looked like then..

Perhaps bring in some other iconic mutants and rationalize them the exact same way they did the turtles. We've come sooo far with prosthetics and mixing CGI for moments that actors cannot cross. Start it now by 2026 we'll be at the movies.

This film (1990 Turtles) is still in my top 20. It’s utterly brilliant. It will, unless they let me make more flicks, be the greatest cinematic adaptation of TMNT of all time, by a mile. (Now what I’m really saying is that I could never top the first, but a Netflix series, with the right stewardship, could be an incredible offering for all of us fans!)

Brilliant??? They shat all over the source material. They turned the turtles into pizza obsessed morons with surfer accents. They took away everything that made the turtles a comic success.

The turtles were not created because of the “ninja craze.” Laird and Eastman created the comic book as a sort-of spoof of Daredevil and X-Men.

The TMNT fandom always seems to be at each others throats in regards to whether the franchise should be darker or lighter.

Dark gritty, I grew up with these movies they were not dark and gritty, more like goofy comedy 😂 I liked them back in the 90's

Secret of The Ooz is a fun movie, but the first is clearly the better film if you take off the rose tinted glasses.

As always, great video. I honestly wish we could have a new TMNT movie that continued the 90's series, ignoring the events of the third film and would expand upon a few details that were left unresolved in Secret of the Ooze.

I think American Ninja was what started the Ninja craze. I was a HUGE Ninja fan as a kid, and watched American Ninja about 100x’s. Enter the Ninja was actually a lower budget film that didn’t receive a theatre release.

I can't wait for the Last Ronin to come out. It already has been given a Rated R rating.

The first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie was a blast, and had a killer soundtrack! It is too bad it received such a bad reputation of being too violent. The sequels were good but were dumbed down in the violence and were too kid friendly. They still had cool stories, and relied on gags to pull the movie through. Fast forward to today, they had a few great Turtle movies since, and my favorite being the Mutant Mayhem, their latest release! If The Last Ronin comes to light, it will be a hit for sure if it is done right! Rated R for Ronin would fit just right!

TMNT 3 1993 was supposed to be in 3-D which is why it's so bright and there's lots of stuff thrown at the camera
