I grew up on a cattle and grain farm, so carry as a kid was pretty simple. The things I constantly carried were a pair of pliers in a pouch on my belt, a Sabre Ireland granddaddy barlow knife, and a bandana. Also had a wallet and a Timex wristwatch, but I only carried those to school or when we went to town. Found out years later that the wristwatch was actually the field watch that my grandpa had worn in WW2, so I put it away for sentimental reasons. Happy New Year, my friend!

Wow, this brought back some memories. I was born in 1970 in Michigan and I remember most of the boys I grew up with carried various pocket knives, lighters and whatever else ended up in our pockets. There was no uniformity to our edc back then, short of there always being a knife. One of my favorite memories is when I was around 8 or 9 a male teacher was trying to open some art supplies, he looked around and asked if I had a knife on me. I handed him my prized cub scout knife, a Camilus if my memory is correct. It struck me that if that exchange happened today there would be an uproar of epic proportions lol.

Interesting 'EDC'. I have nothing left from my original items of my childhood but I remember everything very well, and carry more or less the same 'kit' today (maybe a bit more but that's for another time). I'm a mid 1950s guy growing up in Southern Germany. As kid I carried, beginning with that habit around age of 6, always a huge handkerchief, a 2-meter-piece of a braided line (a special cordage which I got from my dad, it was an incredible stable string used in printing offices to keep the metal letters together), a matchbox and a pocket knife (large and small blade). In the matchbox were also 2 coins for any calls with public telephones. In those days it was expected that every boy carried these things (everybody else had of course any usual cord like something made from hemp or jute or at least a shoestring, but else it was all kind of standard), we used our pocket knives even in school for some projects or for sharpening our pencils. I did not carry any ID card or money in those days and before I was 10 I did not even own a wallet. When somebody sent me for some errands I took their wallet, or carried the money loosely in my pocket. Also later I carried a wallet only when I went for shopping or so; if I remember right I started to use a wallet regularly only as an adult. Somewhen around the age of 8 I added to the match box contents two safety pins, a hack/extension we've learned from one of our teachers, and when I was 10 years old I got a wrist watch gifted, which I used from then on. My dad purchased a small motorised 2wheeler when I was around 15, and in those days one could drive such things without special license, just being above 14 if I remember that right. So I was using that 'Mofa' (as it was called) a lot and that's the reason why I got also used to always have kind of a bandana/shemag with me. (In fact it was an old silk bandana from my grandma ...). I owned a similar magnifier as you showed here, the cover made out of real leather, and another magnifier thing which was foldable (a line tester or whaling glass as these things seem to be called in English, this was also an item used in printing offices). But these things weren't part of my standard EDC, I carried them only when I intended to use them. I remember also a phase when we used to play with rubber bands, shooting each others with some folded paper bullets. During those days (it was only a short period before our school banned such kind of 'games', I was maybe 11 or so when this happened) I carried also some rubber bands. Well, that was it, my childhood EDC.

When I was ten years old in 1971, I carried the Imperial Scout Knife that my father bought for me when I was eight years old from the Blue-Chip Stamp store. I carried it every single day until I bought myself a Buck 110 in 1976 when I started high school. Perfectly legal to carry to my school in the state of California in the '70s. That and a cheap plastic black comb was my every day carry until I joined The Marine Corps in 1979. Needless to say, my E.D.C. became greatly enhanced after that... LOL. I have about 100 knives in my collection today. I rotate knives, but these days I E.D.C. my Recon 1 clip point in CTSXHP more than any other. You have an excellent KZbin channel! 👍

As a middle class white punk from the suburbs, when I was 10, I carried: a pocket knife, chump change for buying trading cards or candy, matches or a lighter and firecrackers. (We called them "salutes.") When I was 13, as an aspiring kung fu fighter, I added a pair of nunchucks in my back pocket and some throwing stars in my jacket pocket.

Very nice that you have all of these items. I was not so fortunate to own & carry a knife until I was 13. Oh, I was around many knives that my grandfather owned, and sometimes I would "borrow" a knife if there was going to be a neighborhood brawl (no I do not condone violence but in the early 80's it was very common to give ass kickings and receive ass kickings) and no the knife was never brandished during these brawls, I think I had a little "prepping" mentality in my head back then to just be prepared. My first knife was a Gerber Frisco Shiv drop point fixed blade. I found that model again on eBay. It had seen plenty of sharpening, but still cuts. It's a knife I would never bat an eye for today, but I find it amazing how our tastes change for what we carry. Thanks for shaing.

I was born in the 70's, but didn't really use my pockets until the 80's. I carried a SAK Tinker, a Durabeam AAx2 Flashlight, a digital Casio watch, and my red Indiana Jones Velcro wallet. Usually, there was also a random assortment of string, a piece of paper, a cool rock, and any other odd thing a boy might find during his adventures.

I had matches at 10 but no lighter 🤔 I think it was because of the cub scouts, we used matches but I think lighters were associated with smoking and they discouraged that behavior. My knife was a Swiss Army knife because they were the Transformer of knives 👍 Writing utensil was a Mechanical Pencil because I had an issue with writing too aggressively and my teacher thought a mechanical pencil would help teach me to lighten up. I also had a magnifying lens but it was one of those wallet lenses, I also carried a pocket constitution that fit in my wallet as well as a pocket bible that I kept in my breast pocket. Some items that you didn’t list that I always had was a leather belt, a flannel shirt, bandanna and a pack of gum.

As for what I carried in the 70's, I always had a comb and a Buck 110 in my back pocket, a Bic lighter and a Binoca blast. Remember Binoca blast? My 70's carry was a lot less interesting. Knife - SAK that looked like it had been sharpened on a curb but was mostly bad technique on a stone by the 10-13 year old me. A bandana was regularly carried. A comb was added when girls became interesting. A match safe when I was out in the woods. A wallet when I started driving and dating - two things that insured I wouldn't have enough $ to buy any more knives...

It wasn't all airplane glue and roach clips. I think I carried a card about the size of a business card that acted as a prepaid school lunch card and some change in coins. I guess either the school/government or parents paid for them and after you (the student) receiving your tray of pretty disgusting food, some cafeteria person used a hole puncher and made a hole or two in a designated place on the card. After all those spaces had holes, I suppose your card (ability to pay for food) was empty. The coins were to purchase additional half pints (or pints) of milk, if desired. If I carried a wallet, it had papers I stapled to fashion a notebook, which I wrote phone numbers and names of friends on. Still something people should do if traveling abroad. Little or no money in the wallet. Sometimes a black plastic comb (wanted to be like Dad). On non school days, I occasionally carried a rusty, dull pocket knife. And home made nunchaku ("nunchucks").
