One of the saddest parts is that Bartman was probably one of the biggest Cubs fans at the game. Dude was not only watching the game live but also listening to it on the radio. Like who does that besides someone that really enjoys baseball?

Never really gave this thought, but you are right. Time changes the way we think about things and while I thought it was funny then, now I just think it is sad. It shows the state of the Cubs fanbase at the time. It was toxic. I'm an M's fan so I had no skin in this game, but I always liked Moises Alou. Now I just see that his reaction + that fan base + what happens after is just a recipe for Bartman becoming a scapegoat. I also think that if Bartman wasn't nerdy then people would have acted differently. Sports fans really can be shitty. I hate it.

I remember watching this live, and how surreal it all felt. Everyone knew the Cubs "cursed" history, and that 8th inning felt downright supernatural. The fact that Bartman got so much trouble out of it felt just as tragic then as it does now. Also just to make clear something the video skipped over: when they said he hadn't been seen publicly, they mean he hasn't made any public appearances. At least as of a few years ago he still goes to work and the like.

As a life long Cubs fan myself and someone who watched that game live, the hate Bartman got was completely unfair. This is the most infamous case of fan interference I know of. This video doesn't capture the full extent of how bad it was, Bartman's life was ruined for a while, he received a lot of death threats and couldn't leave his house without fear of being attacked. Good news is that these days it seems like Cubs fans have come around and realized they went too far and it wasn't his fault and he gets a lot of love these days. Bartman still stays out of the spotlight though, and I can't blame him after all he went through.

I was very upset in the moment having been a massive Cubs fan for my whole life, but what I can say is that as Bartman was escorted out of the stadium and I watched the Fox broadcast continually show his face, I realized that this whole thing was a tragedy. Wrigley Field is a sacred place where fans celebrate their love of the Cubs and is known as the Friendly Confines for that reason. I was sick about how the game went and what it might mean for our chances of advancing to the World Series, but I felt even worse because I realized that this was an event that went against everything I loved about being a Cubs fan. If you love the Cubs, it isn't about winning or losing, but it's about unconditional love. It's about being there, loyal, no matter what, and no matter what anyone says, we forgot about that and really caused some hurt to one of our own. Steve Bartman hasn't resurfaced in any public way since that moment, but I hope he has been able to move on and find it in his heart to forgive us.

Definition In every case of spectator interference with a batted or thrown ball, the ball shall be declared dead and the baserunners can be placed where the umpire determines they would have been without the interference. When a spectator clearly prevents a fielder from catching a fly ball by reaching onto the field of play, the batter shall be ruled out. But no interference is called if a spectator comes in contact with a batted or thrown ball without reaching onto the field of play -- even if a fielder might have caught the ball had the spectator not been there. .... Stadium have a yellow line bordering the field and fan seats so if ever they reach IN over that line, its easily reviewed NOW.

As a Cubs fan, I watched that game. I never thought that Bartman had an impact on the game, and it wouldn't matter if it had. He only did what all the fans around him were doing, reaching for the ball. He was just the unlucky fan who actually touched the ball. I blame the loss on Gonzalez's error (for which he took very little flack) and on manager Dusty Baker's very poor post season management; over working his starters, saving pitchers for the next game (Why? If you win, there is no next playoff game). With the exception of last season, Baker has a history of poor post season management. He's a very good regular season manager, but frankly I think the only reason he won last year was because the talent on his team overcame his poor management.

After beating the Cubs in 2003, the Florida Marlins went on to beat my favorite team the New York Yankees to win the World Series. Bartman's life must have been hell because I am sure he wasn't a rich man and he needed to make a living. The idea of going to work each day in Chicago must have been horrible. I am sure his coworkers were pissed as well. It's really sad and horrible how so many people treated him. The media made him public enemy number one as well because the story was all over the news throughout the entire nation. I do not know what would have done if it had happened to me. If Bartman interfered with a Marlin player attempting to catch the foul ball, the Cub fans would be celebrating. The unwritten rule is that local (home fans) should make way for a home player, but who wants to catch the foul ball of a visiting player? Shucks, Cub fans throw the visiting team home run balls back onto the field. So the desire is much higher to catch and keep a ball hit by the home team. The umpires ruled correctly that the ball was out of play and fans and players could attempt to catch the ball. If they had ruled the ball was in play, the umpires would have called fan interference and the batter would have been out. As you noted, far more happen after that play that caused the Cubs to loose that game. But having to get 4 outs instead of 3 in an inning usually leads to multiple runs to score in that inning. As what happen here.

It was horrible what happened to Batman. However, as a life-long Cubs fan watching that game live, I knew as soon as that incident took place that the Cubs would lose that game and series. But, as a life-long Cubs fan, with all the feels as a Cubs fan, there are things I knew at that time that aren't discussed in this video. We all know the Cubs hadn't won a World Series since 1908 at that point. But the last time they were this close to even sniffing the World Series, they had a 2 game to nothing lead in a best of 5 series and wound up losing three in a row, just as they did in this series. And at that point the Cubs hadn't even been in the postseason in 40 years. However, the Cubs were to blame. Errors, in fact, in both series, as we saw in this video, did them in. I even put a lot of blame on manager Dusty Baker for what ensued, because he was livid immediately after, without even seeing what happened. However I still knew we would lose at that moment...because I'm a Cubs fan.

imagine being reclusive for 20 years? Thats where hes at right now. Even after the Cubs winning the world series 7 years ago. I'm not even sure many people would recognize him after all these years but hes still afriad. Poor dude. Just to try and get a foul ball, which every single person at that game would love to bring home with them.

Something a lot of people gloss over in this whole thing is that there was another fan right next to Bartman who was also reaching for the ball and probably would have interfered as well had Bartman not touched it first. The whole thing is so instinctual too as a fan. If a foul ball is coming your way, most people’s split second reaction is not to move out of the way, but to catch the ball. Especially if your eye is on the ball the whole time and not the player who might be coming over to make a play on it.

I'm a Chicago native and lifelong Cubs fan, but what happened to Bartman was absolutely shameful and disgusting. I feel bad for him. Worth noting the Cubs have different owners now than they did in 2003. Tom Ricketts took over as owner in 2011, and he and the Ricketts family have tried to do right by Bartman since.

The Unluckiest Man Alive. He wasn’t the only fan going for the ball. He just had the misfortune of being the one to touch it. Most of us would also go for the ball in that situation. Good shout Damo about the errors after the incident. It wasn’t Bartman’s fault that the Cubs lost game 5. It wasn’t Bartman’s fault that Alex Gonzalez missed the inning-ending double play. It wasn’t Bartman who gave up all those runs. It wasn’t Bartman who lost Game 7. Moises Alou making a big stink out of the play definitely didn’t help. I can’t possibly imagine what he went through. From the highs of getting tickets to see your team in the playoffs to suffering horrific abuse that surely taints any connection you had with the team prior. Well done by the Cubs ownership to do all they did to try to make up for it.

Any Cubs fans who blamed Bartman are sorry individuals. There was so much more to the Bartman hate than was shown in this video. Another factor that cant be overlooked when looking at this story, and a factor that someone who doesnt follow baseball might not know, is that the Cubs hadnt won the World Series since 1908 at that time. So theyvebeen a LONG suffering fanbase.

I've always felt that if Alou hadn't lost his mind they might have actually gotten out of that inning relatively unscathed. Not only did his reaction drum up the hate for Bartman but I think it rattled the entire team. They got in their own heads.

If he would of not tried to catch the ball, someone else would of ended up hitting it anyway. Some baseball fans take foul balls too seriously and will take it away from a lil kid.

The rules are that you never reach out and interfere with a ball that could possibly be caught, especially with your own team trying to catch it. Remember, the Cubs had not won a world series in nearly 100 years.

Now the context. The cubs haven’t won the World Series since 1908 at this point… and haven’t made it to the World Series since the mid 40s. When you go 80+ years without a World Series people will scape goat anyone.

What happened to Bartman truly is a tragedy. It's the only reason i didn't want the Cubs to win in 2016. The fact that he wanted nothing to do with anything in the "public eye" made it so much worse.

There is an old saying in baseball that's directed at the fans, PAY ATENTION at all times! As a fan you should know the circumstances. Nothing against him but it was one of the worst plays by a fan ever. If the cubs hadn't finally won a World Series he would still be catching hell. lol
