Living in the USA, I was surprised to see those lads crawling into the lead mine. I've read there has been very few academic research papers on lead levels published in the UK since the 1990s, however every four years, the National Screening Committee (NSC) reviews whether to screen for lead levels, with the last review completed in 2021/22. Once lead gets into the body it is nearly impossible to remove. Director of Heritage Testing Hesaan Sheridan, who analyses historic building materials, said: “There isn’t a hard and fast rule to say this building is a particular age, so I can guarantee there’s no lead paint in it." Here in the USA, government and contractors go crazy over any building built before 1978 because of lead paint. Added costs are incurred for lead testing and abatement. Nice video posted here.

my son working at an indoor gun range part-time would pick up spent shells. he contracted LEAD poisoning in a short period of time. he was very sick. i can not imagine the result of being inside a lead mine these men must have endured. great point /comment

Ik this is a little late but an explanation is that touching lead isn’t as much of an issue as ingesting lead dust is. The possibility that lead paint chips may be injected is why there is such strict safety standards for leaded paint and leaded soil. Which makes it even more wild that they were crawling through that mine and chipping away at the ore without any respiratory gear. Perhaps they just thought they would be in here for such a short time it wouldn’t amount to much- still just a dangerous amount of commitment to the Tudor life

Furthermore one can learn a lot about using the season much more efficiently. You use the food and environment you got when you got it instead of importing out of season from half the world across just so you can have ie fresh tomatoes in spring.

Even today farmers need to be a jack of all trades, can't call road side assistance for your car breakdown or an electrician to fix wires on a farm, too far from town lol

I watched the one where they were on a Victorian farm. Even with steam power by the late 19th century, a lot of farm work was still manual well into the 20th century. If the modern world lost agricultural and its production methods, most of us would die of starvation.

Really no amount of lead in your blood is okay- and it’s nearly impossible to remove once it’s there. The main problem though is lead poisoning comes from ingestion of lead or lead dust. So just so long as you aren’t breathing in dust contaminated with leaded paint or other products or eating lead chips you should be fine to observe it and be in a room with it.

Because Henry was already skating on some pretty thin ice: King Henry XIII wanted to divorce his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. He wanted to divorce Catherine because “she” hadn’t given him a male heir. Forget her nearly 24 years of devoted marriage and one daughter named Mary. He wanted to marry his mistress, Anne Boleyn to get his male progeny. Unfortunately for him, the Catholic Church in England at the time refused to give Henry a divorce. So, Henry broke with the church and started the Church of England or the Anglican Church and made himself the head thereof so that the church could never again question his authority or tell him what he could or could not do. This caused a LOT of unrest and division in the country and a lot of hatred toward Anne Boleyn who did not produce a healthy son and who he soon tired of and chose to accuse of treason and incest with her brother in order to unload her. As a result, she was beheaded and Henry moved on to marry Jane Seymour (I’m pretty sure I’ve got all that correct. I’m an American so my English history facts aren’t as spot-on as they could be. Please feel free to point out where I am incorrect in any of my reporting! 😊)

This is one of my favorite series on KZbin. I have watched as many as I can and I am sure I have missed one or two but hope to find all of them. A question I have that creeps up with every episode... who is lucky one that gets to bed down with Princess Ruth? This series covers so much of the lives of the peoples of this time except... how they got to where we are today as far as mating/breeding among with peoples. It's not like I want a Tudor porn. Seriously an account of their mating practices would be nice too. That has to be a part of life as well else we would be where we are today without it. JS

To answer your questions through the series usually Ruth, Peter, ect. Wouldn’t live in the houses they stayed in. They stayed off site probably in a trailer or hotel. But if you want to know more about sex in the Middle Ages History Hit on KZbin has a video on the topic covering the poor all the way up to the rich. Long story short sex wasn’t so taboo for the common folk and a lady in Ruth’s position probably would have been sleeping around with the other servants
