Swapan, to my mind, summarized his point of contention with Nehru when he raised the argument of Somnath Temple - that Nehru saw it as a piece of pristine past rather than a living edifice. This actually crystallizes everything about Nehru; he saw Indian culture purely in aesthetics terms rather than a living civilization. Nehru was similar to the Europeans in the sense that Europeans borrow tremendous aesthetics from their pagan Greco-Roman legacy but they essentially don't live the Greco-Roman culture because Christianity negates the past philosophies. Hinduism on the other hand is not like Christianity because it doesn't negate the past, so there is no reason to not live our culture. Nevertheless, Tharoor is perhaps the only person in left-wing who is worth listening. He understands India very well but due to the ideological baggage of his party, he can't articulate his views freely. I'm sure that deeply, he is a cultural nationalist, not a constitutionalist. It is pretty clear from his numerous discussions and talks.

Nehru might have been a man of virtue but his insular idiosyncrasies, statist outlook and 'socialism' did 'not' bring much good to the nation! Besides these socialistic leaders as it is could not stop the elites from getting rich. The ones who would have become rich through capitalism, inevitably became so through corruption and, partiality and favouritism... 54:52 Shashi Tharoor again shows that he completely lacks understanding of the deep foundation of Indian civilization, when he talks about the "majoritarian chauvinism" of the present government. What the fuck is he blabbing on about??? If Hindus are the majority, what is there to cry about "majoritarianism"??? Every nation and civilization is "majoritarian" because in every nation and civilization the majority decides the course of the nation. This is where Shashi Tharoor is an outsider to Indian civilization. He doesn't know or understand the age-old wise maxim of Mahabharata and Chanakya: "त्यजेदेकं कुलस्यार्थे ग्रामस्यार्थे कुलं त्यजेत् । ग्रामं जनपदस्यार्थे आत्मार्थे पृथिवीं त्यजेत् ॥ -- One must let go of an individual for the sake of an entire family, let go of a family for the sake of a village, let go of a village for the sake of the nation, and let go of the whole world for the sake of our Atman (i.e. self-realization)." What does he want? To sacrifice the lives and rights of the majority to appease the minority? What chauvinism??? He talks about pride in pluralism, pride in variety, etc as though the Modi government is doing something to jeopardize this pluralism and variety. The foundation of Hindu civilization is this acceptance and welcoming of pluralism and variety. Islamic nations do not encourage pluralism. So if India must remain this multicultural and pluralistic society, Hinduism must be strong and flourish. The day Hinduism becomes a minority, Shashi Tharoor's proud pluralistic society will vanish. This is clearly seen in cases such as Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Thinkers who are also doers tend to be practical and practicality is always imperfect. The theory which works on paper needs numerous iterations before it becomes practical wisdom. Shashi Tharoor is somewhere showing Nehru's impractical ways as virtue while we know it was strategically unwise to say the least. How nice would it be if what these two profess so vehemently at this debate is actually practiced by their respective parties. The bottom line is all discourse becomes satirical when it actually comes to practice and political parties in their insatiable gluttony for power sweep all these philosophies under the carpet and all that remains is a carnal desire to control no matter what. Eventually all that remains of these gems are mere are stains on a wall.

Nehru had an incredible opportunity and responsibility to shape the destiny of India as its first prime minister. He screwed it up royally. Not a surprise as he was totally unqualified for the job, which he got thanks to Mohandas Gandhi, who threw Vallabhbhai Patel under the bus and pandered to Nehru's narcissistic appeal to Gandhi to make Nehru the prime minister. Like a billion other Indians, I often wonder what India would have been under Patel.
@tgsaravind4 жыл бұрын
How exactly did he screw it up? Atleast back your argument with some evidence or atleast some details. If anything, Nehru has to be credited for creating pretty much all of the democratic institutions that have been sustaining us till today, and that includes all healthcare infra, educational institutions, scientific programs/research institutions etc etc. You can blame him for adopting socialism (but then again, socialist USSR was the successful model to be emulated back in the day and it is capitalism which led to India being conquered by the East India Co). Moreover, Patel died in 1950, 2 years before the first general elections of India. Patel becoming PM for a year or two wouldn't have made ANY difference at all.
@Objective.fairminded4 жыл бұрын
@@tgsaravind You want details. Here we go: Nehru screwed up the economy, he screwed up India's defense, he screwed up Kashmir, he screwed up relations with China, he screwed up relations with the West, he screwed up education (No Indian institution is in the top 500 even today), he screwed up health/medical facilities (Have you been to a government hospital? Would you like to be treated in one?), he screwed up democracy and acted as a dictator, a model his progeny followed (Under Kamraj plan, he got rid of all his opponents), he screwed up Indian states by centralizing power in Delhi, he screwed up Hindus, he pampered Muslims (Sharia laws for Muslims, Why?), and I can go on. Actually, what did he not screw up? You can credit Nehru with magical powers and having created a wonderful country but the facts speak for themselves, You are in a minuscule minority still impressed by Congi propaganda.

@@Objective.fairminded bullshit. All conjecture. Which institutions did the anti-Nehru Modi govt create in the last 7 years? ZERO. I'm not saying Nehru was perfect. However, the Nehruvian approach (liberal, science based decision-making) is largely correct. His foreign policy of NAM is still a success and has helped India face powerful nations. The IITs, IIMs, ISROs, BARCs etc etc all built by him. Not perfect, but have certainly helped India. India also grew economically under him from zero to 3%. Avg life expectancy increased dramatically. Your sweeping arguments have no nuance and truth to them. Yes, he pampered muslims but it was in a larger context to heal the wounds of the partition. That doesn't mean you oppress and demonize them now

I am seeing this only after 7 months. Anyway not just nehru but gandhi patel and netaji; everybody screwed up. It was total confusion world over when india got independence after wwii. Read dominique lappire and lorry collins"freedom at midnight". Nobody knew jinnah was dying of cancer. Gandhi though he was like a political saint but he had the statesmanship to see the personality of his followers esp nehru and patel. He could have taken a new avatar and put his foot down and told the british after they decide to give independence "i am the leader who led the freedom movement. Yes. There are differences amongst us leaders as well as indian people. But i am quite capable of handling my people and fellow leaders better than you. You better leave first. No partition before your leaving." Had he told that and took full control of the cong party and govt. The cunning mountbatten would have rolled his ugly tail between his legs like a dog does and left india. He could have used patel's valour and silenced jinnah. That is what george washington did in u.s; and nelson mandela in south africa. India would not have split into 3 countries and so much deaths war military spending could have been avoided.

It's is an openion derived from the rss iditos. The very reason u are born into the current stable country of India is because of the able administration of Nehru. Compare urself with Pakistan that was born at the same time and be happy u had a pm like nehru to lead the country with the help of his able ministers. There was no power struggle between Nehru and Patel. Every body wants more but people fail to appreciate, what they got. Churchill predicted that India will soon have civil war and will break up. It is once again the great admiration skills of Nehru and his cabinet that prevented such happenings.

Basically, the summary is that Nehru although he indulged in, and appreciated the superficial aspects of Hindu culture, failed to embody in himself the living traditions of the deep roots of Hindu civilization. As Swapan said, Nehru wanted the renovated Somnath temple to remain as an archeological relic, rather than being a living temple embodying living traditions, which were supported by Sardar Patel and KM Munshi.

The utter discomfort of Shashi Tharoor when speaking of elements of Hindu culture and practice speaks volumes about his complete alienation from the embodiment of Hinduism. All he does is vomit slick words in a fancy artificial accent. The fact that he had to force himself to say "incantations" rather than Mantras says a lot about his total lack of understanding about the deep nature of Hinduism.
@elborrador3332 жыл бұрын
That is the Nehruvian problem that to be considered secular in India means to be publicly and perennially apologetic and self-deprecating about Hindu traditions and culture. Shashi unfortunately considers the constitution to be his holy book and has forgotten that Hinduism, which he gives so much lip service to, doesn't have a concept of a single unalterable holy book.
